四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、I would like to talk to you about one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. I was born and raised there and now I visit it from time to time. My family moved to the city, so I only go back to see friends or to camp and fish.

I grew up in a small town called Antonito Co. It is surrounded by mountains. So camping is a big source of happiness in the valley. There are so many beautiful places to hike.

The town itself is very small. It is said that if you blink (眨眼) when you’re going through it, you’ll miss it. This has some truth in it considering the size of the town. We have one grocery store (杂货店), a tiny post office , and a tiny bank. There are also a few gas stations, bars, some excellent restaurants, a small hospital and of course several schools. However, for clothing and shoes, you have to drive thirty miles to Alamosa to shop there.

Everyone in the town is nice and we all know each other. The crime rate (率) is zero unless you count some weekend fights that break out because some people drink too much. The classes in school are small, so you get a lot of attention from the teacher.

You’re probably wondering why I don’t live there. Well, I can’t get a job there. A lot of the businesses are family-owned. And they never fire(解雇) their employees. So the employees work there usually until they retire(退休). Most people have to go to other places to get a job.

    D. The writer moved to the city because he didn’t like his hometown.

【3】We can learn from the last paragraph t hat in the writer’s hometown .

    A. not many job chances are provided

    B. employees don’t make much money

    C. most people live a very hard life

    D. only the old still live there

  • 25、   Cats are often considered lazy.  They love napping( ) on their own comfortable  beds. However, as Gary the cat shows us, some kittens also love adventure.

Gary is a five-year-old long-haired cat. He goes on camping trips in the Rockies(落基山脉) with his owners every weekend. The cat has his own social media page. He can often be seen exploring snowy peaks( ) in a warm jacket. The cat also enjoys taking pictures with his dog brothers.

James Eastham is Gary’s “dad” and his social media manager. Eastham met Gary when the cat was about two years old. It turned out that Gary was born with an interest in exploring the  great outdoors. He would manage to escape from Eastham’s apartment several times every month. Eastham and his wife then started to take Gary out for walks.

Shortly after that, the Easthams moved to the mountains. Slowly, Gary went on bigger and bigger  adventures. He started with the family’s yard and then parks. As Gary became more comfortable outside, his owners took him on trips to more distant(遥远的) places and for longer periods of time. Eventually, Gary was ready for the mountains and all the fun outdoor activities. This past winter, Gary even tried skiing for the first time.

When he is  tired, Gary will just “hitch  a ride( 搭便车)” on his owners.“These days, he prefers to ride on my shoulders instead of in his pack,” said Eastham.

According to Eastham, outdoor adventures seem to have been good for Gary. The cat used to be shy. Now, he has become much more confident around strangers. “He has even gotten friendlier,” said Eastham.

Gary has become one of the most famous cats on the internet. However, it seems the fame hasn’t gone to his head. “Gary is still a cat,” said Eastham. “It mostly only cares about having enough treats(美餐) every day.”

  • 26、   Meat can be tasty. It is often good for us and it has been part of our meals for hundreds of thousands of years. However, some organizations, such as the Soil Association, say meat should not be eaten every day, especially in schools. This is because farming animals for meat can be bad for the environment and lead to climate (气候)change. The Soil Association wants schools to have more plant-based meal choices that don’t have meat and that do not cause environmental problems. The Government already advises that schools have one no-meat day each week, but not all schools follow this advice. So what do you think? Should schools be made to have one completely no-meat day each week?

Yes - it’s important to protect the climate

Everyone needs to do their bit to help the planet, and eating less meat is a good start. Although meat can be healthy and is good for us in the right amounts, eating it every day means a lot of animals have to be farmed. This uses up valuable things such as water and land. The animals themselves add to climate change by producing a gas called methane. Besides, it’s not necessary to eat meat every day. There are many ways to get the nourishment we need to be healthy. We could eat foods like beans, nuts, potatoes and so on. What’s more, eating more plant-based foods will save schools’ money because they are cheaper than meat. This money could be used on books and school trips.

    No-_____________

Students should be able to decide what they eat - it is a personal choice. Some students, for example, might eat a little bit of meat each day, but less overall. Besides, meat is full of healthy vitamins and nutrients needed for growth. If schools don’t serve meat, they might end up serving chips and junk food instead, which wouldn’t be healthier. It’s right to tell and educate young people about climate change and the results of the farming industry, but they should be encouraged to change their eating habits rather than being told that they have to. Making people change their habits doesn’t always mean people can change their minds.

【1】The example of the Soil Association taken by the writer is to show ________.

A.every school must have one no-meat day

B.no-meat day is becoming a tradition in all schools

C.students should be required to cat meat in the right amounts to keep healthy

D.people try to protect the environment by having one no-meat day in schools

【2】The underlined word “this” in Paragraph 2 refers to _________.

    A.eating much meat

    B.farming lots of animals

    C.having one no-meat day

    D.eating more plant-based foods

【3】Which of the following is the best sentence to fill in “_______” in the passage?

A.it should be up to the students

    B.schools shouldn’t have one no-meat day

C.it’s necessary to change students’ eating habits

D.students should eat a little bit of meat every day

【4】What does the writer mean by the underlined sentence in the last paragraph?

A.Changing people’s minds is really a difficult task.

B.It’s not polite to make people change their eating habits.

C.Habits changing cannot always lead to minds changing.

D.It’s more important to change eating habits than to change their minds.

  • 27、   Don’t throw away your old phones. You are actually throwing away real gold! Smartphones have many kinds of useful metals. People can recycle them to make new electronics.

But many people may not know this. In Australia alone there are more than 25 million unused mobile phones lying around, The Sydney Morning Herald reported. The gold in these phones can add up to a value of more than $80 million. There are about 2 billion smartphone users around the world, who change their phone once every 11 months on average. So in China, eighty million old phones come along every year.

However, it’s not easy to get the useful things out of the phones. Smartphones have not only useful things but also harmful materials. Guiyu, a small town in Shantou, Guangdong, is one of the world’s biggest dumping grounds for electronic waste, Reuters reported. Many recycling centers in Guiyu simply break the old electronics by hand and don’t think about the pollution it causes. It’s reported that 81 percent of children in Guiyu are harmed by lead poisoning(铅中毒).

Veena Sahajwalla, a professor at Australia’s University of New South Wales, has made a mini factory. It makes smartphone recycling cleaner and easier. The mini factory is very small and easy to move around. It breaks the phones and automatically(自动地)removes the phone’s useful things. That way, humans do not get poisoned.

Well, have you ever wondered what happens to the old phone after it’s no longer yours? A part of your old smartphone could soon be proudly worn around the neck of one of the world’s top athletes. Organizers of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics say that medals for the event will be made from recycled phones. They will also be made out of people’s thoughts for avoiding waste. They think there is an important message in this for the future.

1The underlined word "this" refers to the fact that________.

A.old phones can be recycled B.people change phones often

C.few people can afford smartphones D.many old phones are thrown away every year.

2From Paragraph 3, we know a dumping ground is a place where people________.

    A.care for children B.sell smartphones

    C.keep the waste D.produce electronics

3Why do so many children in Guiyu get poisoned by lead?

A.There are a lot of smartphone users in Guiyu.

B.Guiyu is polluted by electronic waste.

C.People in Guiyu use machines to recycle electronics.

D.Guiyu has the world’s biggest smartphone factory.

4Which is TRUE about Veena Sahajwalla’s factory?

A.It’s so big that it can’t be moved around.

B.It produces 80 million smartphones every year.

C.Smartphone recycling there is cleaner and easier.

D.The workers there break the old electronics by hand.

5What does the writer want to tell us in the last paragraph?

A.The top athletes will get smartphones in the 2020 Olympics.

B.The people in Tokyo will be proud of the 2020 Olympics.

C.There are many harmful materials in smartphones.

D.It’s significant to recycle electronic waste.
