  • 25、One night in December 2011, a bear came into the city of Vancouver in Canada. It walked through the streets, past houses, shops and offices until it found some food in bins outside a restaurant and started eating. In the morning, someone saw the bear and called the police. They came with a vet(兽医)from the city zoo, put the bear in a lorry and took it back to the mountains. Luckily, the bear was safe, but what happens in other countries when big animals come into cities?

In Cape Town, South Africa, baboons(狒狒)enter the city when they are hungry. They go into gardens and eat fruit from trees, or into houses and take food from cupboards(碗橱)and fridges. Baboons are strong animals and they can scare people. But the city can be dangerous for baboons too.

Sometimes, they are killed in traffic accidents. Human food is very bad for their teeth because it has a lot of sugar. Now, there are baboon monitors(监督员)working in Cape Town to return the animals to the countryside.

In Berlin, pigs sometimes come into the city to look for food. They eat flowers and plants from parks and gardens, and cause accidents in the streets. Some people like the pigs and they give them food and water to drink. Other people do not like the pigs and want the government and police to stop them.

In Moscow there are 35, 000 wild dogs. They live in parks, old houses, markets and train stations. Many people give them food and water. Some make small houses for the dogs in their gardens. This helps them in winter, when the temperature is10 and there is a lot of snow and ice.

In some cities, you can see birds, insects, mice and squirrels every day. But sometimes, it is dangerous when big animals come from the countryside to find food. We need some good ideas to stop animals coming into the city without hurting them.

1Why do big animals go into cities, according to the article?

    A. Because they are hungry. B. Because they are homeless.

    C. Because they are lost. D. Because they like being with humans.

2In Vancouver, a bear came into the city on a night.

    A. spring B. summer C. autumn D. winter

3Why should we stop animals from entering cities?

    A. They often kill people in the streets.

    B. They eat too much food in people’s gardens.

    C. They may harm other animals in the city.

    D. They may cause trouble and endanger people’s lives.

  • 27、In today’s world of modern science and medicine, a more traditional treatment is once again becoming popular---animal friendship.

It is now well-known that people with problems such as heart disease or cancer live longer and get better more quickly if they have pets. Keeping pets reduces blood pressure and makes people less worried. Animals are increasingly important in treating older people who have memory loss and other brain problems. These people often feel nervous and upset. Activities with animals help them improve their physical condition and also give them joy, amusement and caring friendship.

Here is a case that shows the benefits of animals. John was a six-year-old mute. He had no physical problems. He just refused to talk. His older cousin, Ned, had a parrot(鹦鹉)called Sally, and John used to visit it. When he arrived, Ned used to say, ”Hi, John!”We all know parrots copy what they heat. After a few visits, Sally began saying “Hi, John!” when John came into the room. Then, one day, John turned to the parrot and replied “Hi, Sally!”Staying with the parrot encouraged John to begin talking.

Another use of animal helpers is in schools. In some cases, animals are use to help children with physical or personal problems. In other cases, they are used to teach children to get on well and share with others, and even to teach them about animals.

If you want to know more about animal helper programs ,you can get in touch with organizations like Riding for the Disabled or do a search under “animal therapy” on the Internet. You don’t have to be an animal trainer or a doctor to join in.

1Which is NOT mentioned as an illness that animals can help with?

    A. Fever B. Cancer C. Heart disease D. Blood pressure

2The underlined word “mute” in Paragraph3 is closest in meaning to “_________”.

    A. a person who speaks slowly B. a person who does not speak

    C. a person who cannot hear D. a person who enjoys talking

3How can animals help school children according to the passage?

    A. They can make children more popular.

    B. They can improve children’s memory.

    C. They can increase children’s blood pressure.

    D. They can teach children the value of sharing.

4Which of the following shows the organization of the passage?

    (①=Para.(自然段)1   =para.2 =para.3 =para.4 =para.5

    A. ①;②;③;④;⑤ B. ①②;③④;⑤

    C. ①②;③;④⑤ D. ①;②③;④⑤
