  • 24、   Cats are often considered lazy.  They love napping( ) on their own comfortable  beds. However, as Gary the cat shows us, some kittens also love adventure.

Gary is a five-year-old long-haired cat. He goes on camping trips in the Rockies(落基山脉) with his owners every weekend. The cat has his own social media page. He can often be seen exploring snowy peaks( ) in a warm jacket. The cat also enjoys taking pictures with his dog brothers.

James Eastham is Gary’s “dad” and his social media manager. Eastham met Gary when the cat was about two years old. It turned out that Gary was born with an interest in exploring the  great outdoors. He would manage to escape from Eastham’s apartment several times every month. Eastham and his wife then started to take Gary out for walks.

Shortly after that, the Easthams moved to the mountains. Slowly, Gary went on bigger and bigger  adventures. He started with the family’s yard and then parks. As Gary became more comfortable outside, his owners took him on trips to more distant(遥远的) places and for longer periods of time. Eventually, Gary was ready for the mountains and all the fun outdoor activities. This past winter, Gary even tried skiing for the first time.

When he is  tired, Gary will just “hitch  a ride( 搭便车)” on his owners.“These days, he prefers to ride on my shoulders instead of in his pack,” said Eastham.

According to Eastham, outdoor adventures seem to have been good for Gary. The cat used to be shy. Now, he has become much more confident around strangers. “He has even gotten friendlier,” said Eastham.

Gary has become one of the most famous cats on the internet. However, it seems the fame hasn’t gone to his head. “Gary is still a cat,” said Eastham. “It mostly only cares about having enough treats(美餐) every day.”

  • 25、The Internet is full of false information. It is important for us all to avoid being fooled by such information. Here are three examples of Internet hoaxes.

On his website, a man by the name of Tony has asked for money to save the life of a pretty little rabbit named Toby that he saved from under his house. A cat must have attacked the rabbit, the man said, so he took it in. he gave Toby loving care and nursed him back to health. There is a very cruel point, however. If the man doesn’t receive enough money, he will eat poor little Toby. (Don’t worry, though. Remember, it’s just a hoax!)

While the streets of New Orleans, the USA, were still flooded after a terrible hurricane (飓风), a frightening e-mail was sent around the Internet. It included a photograph of a large crocodile(鳄鱼) over five meters long. According to the message, it had been swimming around the flooded city eating people. It was later discovered that the photographs of the crocodile were of one that was caught in the Congo (刚果) years before.

The following e-mail hoax takes in many people. It says that a large British company will pay you to send their e-mail to as many people as possible. For every person that you send the e-mail to, it promises you will receive $5.00; for every person that you send it to that sends it to someone else, you’ll get $3.00; and for every third person that receives it, you will be paid $1.00. To make it even more believable, the sender says that at first he thought it was a hoax, but the company soon sent him $800.00.

    C. The crocodile swam around the flooded city and ate several people.

    D. Someone received $800.00 from the company because of the e-mail.

【5】The main idea of the passage is to _________.

    A. teach how to create a professional website with attractive stories

    B. show that anyone can create good Internet hoaxes with some facts

    C. explain that, even though they seem false, Internet hoaxes might be true

  • 26、   One of the main purposes of traveling is to relax and take a break from your normal daily life. Whatever the truth is, we’re not always free to do what we like when traveling to a foreign country, and a US tourist learned that the hard way.

On Aug 12, the unnamed 4l-year-old man was beaten by a passer-by after he was seen giving Nazi salutes(纳粹礼) again and again on a street in Dresden, Germany.

Ever since the end of World War II, Germany has had strict laws to forbid the Nazi salute, as well as other symbols of Nazism.

In fact, most countries have their own taboos. If you plan to travel overseas, it's best to get familiar with these taboos before you start touring local sites. The following are some examples.

    Singapore

You can get fined for a lot of things in Singapore, including feeding birds, spitting, urinating in public, smoking in public, not flushing a public toilet after you use it, and eating or drinking on buses or trains.

    Japan

You're not supposed to wear your shoes in someone’s house, but you're not supposed to take your shoes off outside the house either. Instead, there's a small area inside the door called a “genkan” which is where your shoes should go. If you're still not sure where that is, pay attention to what other people do and do the same.

    France

French people don't like it when you talk about money. It's OK if you say that you want to quit a job because you are paid little money, but you should never say the exact amount. Money is a “dirty” topic in France.

    1When traveling abroad, we can’t ________.

A.relax and take a break from normal daily life

B.follow what other people do and do the same

C.be always free to do whatever we like

D.tour the local sites and give salutes

2The underlined word “taboos” means something you must________doing.

    A.enjoy B.avoid C.finish D.keep

    3________is considered to be proper.

A.Eating or drinking on buses or trains in Singapore

B.Wearing your shoes in your Japanese friend’s house

C.Talking about how much money you can make in France

D.Not smoking, spitting or feeding birds in public in Singapore

4You can read this passage in (a)n________.

    A.advertisement B.poster C.novel D.magazine

It is the statue of a woman named Margaret Haughery. When Margaret was a tiny baby, her father and mother died, and she was adopted by two young people as poor and as kind as her own parents. She lived with them until she grew up. Then she married, and had a little baby of her own. But very soon her husband died, and then her baby died, too, and Margaret was all alone in the world. She was poor, but she was strong, and knew how to work.

Later, there came a great sickness in the city. And so many mothers and fathers died that there were more orphans than the asylums(收容所)could possibly take care of.

Margaret decided to help them. She gave them part of her wages every week and worked for them. Margaret was so good at doing business that, a few years later, she earned more money. And then she built a home for orphan babies, she called it her baby house.

When Margaret died people were surprised to find that, with all her giving, she had still saved a great deal of money, and that she had left every penny of it to the different orphan asylums of the city!

And then the people of New Orleans made a statue of her, in memory of the great love and the great power of plain Margaret Haughery.
