    Make Stress Work for You

Stress can come from all directions. We live in a world filled with stress. Rather than only looking for ways to change the stress-filled situations, look for stress that can work for you. The following are suggestions to make stress work in your favor.

1    . Colors of the walls, floor coverings, and furniture can reduce stress. Cooling greens and blues are positive colors that can reduce stress and create a sense of well-being.

2    . Take time to recognize signs of stress like anger, work and sleep habits. As you understand these signs, you are beginning to know how to make stress work.

3  . We can accept what we cannot change by changing what we can. Make choices that are realistic, not beyond your ability.

4   . Find out what your strengths are and focus on taking the time to do a project built on them. If you take on too many projects, you will most probably lose control and meet with new stress.

5  . Laughing at oneself can bring less stress from the inside. And laughing creates less wrinkles皱纹than worrying.

    A. Stop and look at yourself

    B. Don’t say yes to everything

    C. Accept what cannot be changed

    D. Create environments that reduce stress

    E. Develop a sense of humour

    F. Leave time for the unexpected

四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Tony and Jane give their opinions about keeping pet dogs.

Keeping pet dogs is a good idea, says Tony

I think people should be allowed to keep pet dogs. There are lots of reasons for this.

First, dogs are really cute. It’s nice to pick them up and hold them in our arms, and it’s wonderful to see them growing up quickly.

Second, your dog might not be dangerous but by simply barking he can keep away a burglar who might think of entering your house.

Finally, we can also learn about life and death from dogs. Young people can learn how to care for others and how to respect all living things by keeping a pet dog.

I think keeping pet dogs is something everyone can enjoy.

Keeping pet dogs is not a good idea, say Jane

In my opinion, it is never a good idea to keep a pet dog.

Firstly, pet dogs create a lot of mess. They leave fur and hair on the floor, on beds and on sofas, and they need to be washed daily.

Secondly, we should remember that not all dogs are friendly. Some dogs bark at people they do not know. A few dogs bark all night. This stops their neighbors from getting any sleep. A small number of pet dogs even bite people.

Lastly, you have to make sure pet dogs are in good health and provided with good pet products. Paying for dog food and seeing thevetwhen dogs are ill can be expensive.

I believe that people should not keep pet dogs.

1Tony would probably think it____ to put pet dogs on beds.

    A. uncomfortable   B. acceptable

    C. dangerous   D. untidy

2From the underlined part, we can guess “vet” means“ ____”.

    A. places where people can buy dog food

    B. places where people can treat dogs

    C. people who can train dogs to do something useful

    D. people who provide medical care for dogs

3Tony and Jane disagree on ____.

    A. the growth of pets

    B. the sound made by dogs

    C. the money paid for pets

    D. whether dogs need washing daily

  • 25、   Most people want to be happy, but few know how to find happiness. Money and success alone do not bring lasting happiness. Aristotle, a Greek thinker, said, “Happiness depends upon ourselves.” In other words, we make our own happiness. Here are a few suggestions to help you be happier.

The first secret of happiness is to enjoy the simple things in life. Too often, we spend so much time thinking about the future—for example, getting into college or getting a good job—that we fail to enjoy the present. You should enjoy life's simple pleasures, such as reading a good book, listening to your favourite music, or spending time with close friends. People who have several close friends often live happier and healthier lives.

Another secret of living a happy life is to be active, and have hobbies where you forget your problems and time. Many people experience this dancing, or playing a sport, such as swimming. You can forget about your problems, and only think about the activity.

Finally, many people find happiness in helping others. Studies show that people feel good when they spend their time helping others. If you want to feel happier, do good things for someone. You can help a friend with his or her studies, go shopping to buy food for an elderly person, or simply help out around the house by washing the dishes.

1According to the writer, which isn't a simple thing in life?

    A.Enjoying the present.

    B.Reading a book.

    C.Spending time with close friends.

D.Spending too much time getting a good job.

2The best title(标题) of the passage is ________.

    A.Money Makes You Happy

    B.The Secrets of Happiness

C.Ideas for Helping Other People to Be Happy

    D.Good Friends Make You Happy

3The second paragraph tells us that ________.

A.the more friends you have, the happier you will be

B.we shouldn't think about our future

C.happiness is to enjoy the simple things in life

D.some people fail to live a happy life

4The passage gives us ________ pieces of advice on happiness.

    A.one B.two C.three D.four

    5The writer thinks that ________.

A.everyone knows how to live a happy life

B.it's wrong to spend time on work

C.hobbies take up too much time

D.doing good things for someone can make you happier

  • 26、   Dec.27, 2019 was an exciting day for Chinese people. China's biggest and most powerful carrier rocket, the Long March 5, was successfully launched(发射)in Hainan that day.

The 57-meter-tall rocket is the tallest, strongest and the most technologically difficult rocket in China. Because the Long March 5 is much bigger than other rockets in the Long March series(系列), it has been given a funny name "Chubby 5".

  • 27、I used to think that life in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, was filled with never-changing styles. I hated that everyone seemed to know everything about everyone else. Everyone seemed to enjoy talking about other people and their lives. I also didn’t like the fact that people seemed very close-minded. I felt trapped. I felt like I was missing . It seemed to me that city life would be the opposite.

Then I took my first trip to New York City. I couldn’t wait to experience the city. However, when I arrived in the Big Apple, it wasn’t at all what I had imagined. I knew it was home to thousands of people, but I hadn’t had the least expectation to see so many people on the street at one time. All the streets were filled with people. I also felt a little surprised to see that everyone was in a hurry and everything moved at such a fast pace(步伐). When I took the subway for the first time, I said hello to the middle-aged woman next to me. She looked at me with dislike and didn’t say a word.

After just one day, I realized how important my small town is to me. Now I miss the familiar faces I see every day. I like the feeling of safety and belonging my town offers. Jim Thorpe gives me a sense of community and togetherness that the city doesn’t provide. I realize just how much a simple hello does for a stranger — it really can make your day a little better.

My big trip showed me that my small town really has its own values in me that I didn’t even know I had. I never would have known what a big place my town holds in my heart if I had not taken that trip to New York City.

1What surprised the author most in New York City?

    A. The gestures of greeting.   B. The modern transportation.

    C. The modern life.   D. The crowded streets.

2What made the author change his / her attitudes to his /her hometown?

    A. Travelling to New York City.   B. The familiar faces in Jim Thorpe.

    C. Greeting the middle-aged woman .   D. Everybody likes talking about others.

3What would be the best title for the passage?

    A. Love of my small town

    B. A sense of community

    C. A pleasant trip to New York City

    D. Differences between big cities and small towns
