24、 Sometimes, I doubt whether there is any love between my parents. Every day they are busy trying to make money. They don't act romantic ways couples do in books and on TV. They never say "I love you". It's not their style.
One day, my mother was sewing (缝) a quilt (被子). I sat down beside her. "Mom, I have a question to ask you," I said after a while.
"What?" she asked, still working.
"Is there love between you and Dad?" I asked her. She didn't answer right away. I thought I had hurt her. At last I heard my mother say, "Susan, look at this thread (线). Sometimes it appears, but most of it disappears in the quilt. It makes the quilt strong. If life was a quilt, then love should be a thread. It can hardly be seen anywhere, but it's really there."
I listened carefully but I didn't understand her until the next spring. My father suddenly got seriously sick. My mother had to stay with him in the hospital for a month.
After they got back, she helped my father walk slowly down the country road every day. My father had never been so gentle.
"Dad, how are you feeling now?" I asked him one day.
"Susan, don't worry about me," he said, "I just like walking with your mom. I like this kind of life."
Once, I thought love meant flowers, gifts and sweet kisses. Now, I know that love is the thread that holds a family together.
【1】Why does the writer think there may be no love between her parents?
A.Because they never say "I love you." to each other.

【3】What can we learn from the passage?
A.The writer's parents don't love the writer.
B.The writer's parents love each other in their own way.
C.The writer's father didn't like to walk with his wife.

25、We may know that there are four basic stages that human beings pass through when they enter and live in a new culture. This process, which helps us to deal with culture shock(文化冲击), is the way our head and our personality react to(对…做出反应) the strange new things we meet with when we move from one culture to another.
Culture begins with the “honeymoon stage”. This is the time when we first arrive in which everything about the new culture is strange and exciting. We see new things, hear new sounds and language, eat new kinds of food. This stage can last for quite a long time because we feel we are very excited.
Unluckily, the second stage can be more difficult. After we have got used to our new life, we can become very tired and begin to miss our homeland and our family, friends, pets. All the little problems in life seem to be much bigger and more disturbing when you face them in a foreign culture. This time of cultural adjustment(调整) can be very difficult and lead to pulling away from the new culture.
The third stage is called the “adjustment stage”. This is when you begin to realize that things are not so bad in the host culture. Your sense of humor usually becomes stronger and you realize that you are becoming stronger by learning to take care of yourself in the new place. Things are still difficult, but you are now a survivor!
The fourth stage can be called “at ease at last”. Now you feel quite comfortable in your new place. You can deal with most problems that you have. You may still have problems with the language, but you know you are strong enough to deal with them.
There is a fifth stage of culture shock which many people don’t know about. This is called
“reverse culture shock”. Surprisingly, this happens when you go back to your own culture and find
that you have changed and that things there have changed while you have been away. Now you feel a little uncomfortable back home. Life is a struggle!
【1】How do you feel during the first stage of culture shock?
A. Lonely and sad. B. Bored and homesick.
C. Angry and impatient. D. Happy and excited.
【2】How could the third stage be described?
A. Adjustment. B. Pulling away C. Shock. D. Anger.

A. Human beings would pass through four stages when they begin to live in a new culture.
B. Entering and living in a new culture is challenging(挑战).
C. It is much fun to live in a new culture.
D. Life in a new culture is a struggle.

27、 The world’s longest cross-sea bridge, the 55-km-long Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge(HZMB), opened on Oct 24, 2018. The bridge connects Hong Kong and Macao to the Chinese mainland city of Zhuhai. The construction of HZMB began in 2009 and cost about 120 billion yuan. The Guardian described it as one of the “seven wonders of the modern world” and would change the way people live.
The HZMB is unique in many ways. It is designed for a long service life of 120 years, which is 20 years longer than that of other bridges.
The HZMB also makes it much more convenient to travel between the three areas it connects. It will shorten the travel time from Hong Kong to Zhuhai to about 45 minutes, 3 hours earlier than before.
And it’s not just a bridge. In one section, the bridge turns into a 6.7-km undersea tunnel that passes through two man-made islands. The tunnel is the world's longest undersea tunnel for road traffic, allowing large ships to continue passing through the sea area above the tunnel.
By drawing local cities closer, the bridge will do good to the area's development. It is expected to drive the economic development of Hong Kong, Macao and nine Guangdong cities.

B.The economic development of all the cities in Guangdong can be developed.
