The earth is 4 600 million years old. We humans have lived on earth for only 35 000 years, but during this period we have changed our planet a lot in many ways. Some things we’ve done are very good for the earth while some are bad.
All over the world, people have cut down millions of trees. When it rains or when the wind blows, the earth is taken away. Forests have become deserts, so more and more sorts of animals and plants are disappearing.
In big cities, cars and buses have polluted the air. Many people in cities now have health problems.
Factories have also polluted the land and the water. As a result, many rivers and lakes are nowdead.
Around the earth, there’s a special kind of oxygen called “ozone”(O3). It is important to theearth. But now air pollution is destroying it and that has made a very big hole in the ozone layer. Too much harmful radiation from the sun passes through the hole and reaches the earth directly. This is very dangerous because this kind of radiation can cause cancer.
Carbon dioxide (CO2) in the air has increased a lot. It mainly comes from burning oil, coal andwood. This has formed a “blanket” around the earth. The heat from the sun can’t escape so thetemperature is rising. This is called “the greenhouse effect”. It causes the level of the oceans to rise and the climate of the earth to change.
All these problems are very serious, so we must do something now.

25、 Mr. Guo is a teacher from Xi’an. He asked his students to hand in their homework through a QR code(二维码). “We spent an hour or two in class learning how to generate(产生) the codes, and in the end everything gets easier,” said Guo. “When students finish the homework, they keep it on WeChat(微信). Then, each student makes his own QR code and gives it to me. So I can check their work everywhere using my computer or cellphone.”
When Guo scans(扫描) his students’ QR codes, their homework appears on his phone. He finds that their homework becomes more creative(创新的), with many pictures, music and even videos.
Guo’s students like the new way and think it is interesting. “We are living in the information age. Many students like to work with computers, which makes learning more interesting.” said Tingting, a student of Guo’s.
“The paper is not easy to keep, but the code is easy to keep and share,” Guo said. “It is worth trying to use new technology in education. Education itself is a kind of creation. I don’t want my students to fall behind the times.”
However, some parents are worried. They are afraid that their children will spend too much time on computers and less time communicating with teachers. But in fact, it’s unnecessary. Students still need to look up information in books and write it down when they do their homework. They only use the code when they hand in their work, which doesn’t take them too much time. Also for teachers, it allows them to check the students’ work at any time.

Fight to the finish
In a match that was called “one of the greatest fights I’ve ever seen in my life” by fight commentator (评论员) Joe Rogan, Chinese MMA (mixed martial arts, 综合格斗) fighter Zhang Weili beat Polish fighter Joanna Jedrzejczyk on March 7.
Zhang, 30, and Jedrzejczyk, 32, squared off (打斗) in Las Vegas, with Zhang successfully defending her strawweight (草量级) UFC (终极格斗冠军赛) title. The fight was highly anticipated, as both women are known as top fighters among their peers.
Zhang’s training was cut by the novel coronavirus outbreak. It forced her to travel from Beijing to Thailand and then to Abu Dhabi before arriving in Vegas about a week later than planned, according to China Daily. Worse still, Zhang was offended (激怒) by a post on social media in which Jedrzejczyk seemed to make fun of the outbreak. In a mock poster that Jedrzejczyk posted, she wears a gas mask (防毒面具) standing behind Zhang.
Although the post was later deleted, Zhang said that she was fired up to make Jedrzejczyk pay for the tasteless joke in the octagon(八角格斗场).
In the end, Zhang scored a narrow win over Jedrzejczyk, with both ending up in the hospital due to the intensity (激烈程度) of their fight.
“All fighters deserve respect from one another in the octagon. I don' t like people hitting each other with trash talk," said Zhang following her victory. “We go for the championship with our punches (拳头) but we shall never end up being remembered as only talking with violence (暴力)."
“Now the virus situation is not just affecting China, but the whole world. I hope everybody in the world can stand together to fight the virus with a united effort,” she said.

27、 I was in the seventh grade, and we had moved to New Jersey in November. By then, everyone already had had their own friends, and no one wanted to talk to a new girl. To make things worse, they put me in "Section L". I found out later that everyone called Section L "Loserville". It was sort of an open secret that it was the section for troublemakers and not-so-smart kids. When I found out, I wanted to scream. I had always been a good student and had amazing friends, and now everyone thought I was a loser!
I did text my friends in Illinois almost every night, especially my best friend, Ana. At first my friends wanted to hear all about it. But then some stopped texting back once I said something about how miserable (痛苦的) I was. One night when I was texting with Ana, I complained about another friend who had just done that. Ana's texts came really fast for the next few minutes and they surprised me. She said that she was tired of hearing about how bad everything was in New Jersey, too. She said she did not want to hurt my feelings, but that I needed to stop feeling so sorry for myself all the time, and I had to try to make things better.
The next day, I thought a lot about what Ana had said. She was right!
I wish I could say that everything changed overnight after that, but it didn't, I was still stuck in "Loserville", and some people were still mean (苛刻) to me, even though I tried to just stay out of their way.
But what did change was me-I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and did something about making friends. I signed up to make sets for the school play. I met a lot of new people there, and suddenly I had friends to say hi to in the halls!
I still miss Illinois sometimes, but life in New Jersey isn't so hard any more. Even though I couldn't change my situation, I could change my attitude-and that made all the difference.
