24、Real Friend,Real Meaning
We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people. “Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen?” “When I got that great job, did Jim really feel good about it, as a friend? Or did he envy my luck?” When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, it’s too late.
Why do we go wrong about our friends or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. And if we don’t really listen, we will miss the meaning behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, “You’re a lucky dog.” and that’s friendly. But a “lucky dog”? There’s a bit of envy (嫉妒) in those words. Maybe he doesn’t see it himself. But bringing in the “dog” bit puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that he doesn’t think you observe your luck.
Just think of all the things you have to be “thankful for” is another noise that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he? Wrapped up in this phrase is the thought that your problem isn’t important. It’s telling you to think of all the starving people in the world when you haven’t got a date for Saturday night.
How can you tell the real meaning behind someone’s words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says agree with the tone of voice? His posture (姿态)? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people say to you may save another mistake.

26、 It has long been considered one of the best companies, but do you have what it takes to work for Google?
It may take a sharp mind, as an American author says that the search engine giant (搜索引擎巨人) asks its interviewees to answer difficult question.
William Poundstone believes that he has unlocked the secret of how to succeed in an interview at Google in a new book, Are You Smart Enough to Work at Google?
Poundstone lists several of the brain teasers (脑筋急转弯) that are said to be used by Google interviewers, from “can you swim faster in water or in syrup (糖浆)?” to “how would you weigh your head?”
Poundstone told ABC News that any Google’s questions are open-ended on purpose. The interviewer’s goal is to see how the thinking process of the applicant (应聘者) works, and to test his or her creativity when solving problems. He suggests the applicant should “retell the question” in their own words, as doing so gives them time to think and makes sure that they understand what is being asked.
Some of Google’s brain teasers:

* How much toilet paper would you need to cover Texas?
* You are shrunk (缩小) to the height of a nickel (五分硬币) and thrown in a blender (搅拌机).

Do you use emoji very often? It's said that emoji is the fastest growing language in history. Five billion emojis are sent every day just on some social media, such as Wechat and Facebook.
They're appearing in some surprising places too. One court ( 法庭 ) judge in England used a smiley face emoji in a document ( 文件, 文献 ) to make it easy to explain the court's decision to children. It's not surprising that there's a day to celebrate emojis, but what do you know about its organizers, the website Emojipedia?
The company Unicode actually creates the computer code that gives us emojis, but Emojipediais where you can learn exactly what each emoji means and how to use it. Most of us probably know and use the most popular emojis, like the classic smiley face, heart or the smiling face with tears of laughter. But if you want to grow your emoji vocabulary, you can use Emojipedia to find out new ways to speak emoji.
Unicode adds new emojis all the time. They might take time to be shown on all platforms and phones, but you will see them immediately on Emojipedia. An important improvement to the emoji list, which had 2, 823 emojis after its 2018 update, is to make the emojis more various. The code for each emoji is the same, but different platforms, like Wechat or Facebook, design their emojis in different ways. When Emojipedia was deciding on which day to hold World Emoji Day, only Apple was using a calendar emoji with a date on, 17 July. So, they decided to celebrate World Emoji Day on 17 July too.
If you want to send someone a message using emoji to celebrate World Emoji Day, Emojipedia has plenty to choose from, including six colors of raising hand emojis, five party emojis and two kinds of fireworks. You can even choose a world globe that shows the part of the world you live in. Whichever emojis you choose to celebrate, we wish you Happy World Emoji Day!

28、Liyuan Library
Liyuan Library (篱苑书屋), known as one of China's most beautiful bookstores, is located in a small hillside village near Beijing.
The project, designed by architect Li Xiaodong, was built with 40,000 wooden sticks. In the village, Li found large amounts of wooden sticks piled around each house. The villagers gather these sticks all year round to fuel their cooking stoves (炉子). Thus they decided to use this o【1】 material in a special way.
“This project is about the relationship of a building to the surroundings and i【2】 role (角色) in serving the community (社区), rather than a building as an individual object,” Li told the visitors.
In the two-and-a –half years of the operation, Liyuan Library has experienced unexpected levels of use and appreciation. A new bus s【3】 has opened close by for the frequent visits by thousands of people, including local villagers, tourists from the Beijing urban area, and many international visitors as well.
“Everybody is f【4】 to visit,” explained Li. “However, visitors are encouraged to bring two books to the library, and take one back home from the collection in order to keep the place a center of k【5】 exchange.”
Instead of adding a new building in the village, they chose this site in the nearby mountains, a pleasant five-minute walk from the village center. In doing so, they could p【6】 a place for clear thoughts when one takes the effort to head for the reading room.
Li described his practice in the following way: “We try to m【7】 technology, community, local materials, modern thinking and a traditional sense of identity together.”
