“What would have happened if I hadn’t lost that necklace? Who knows? ” Mathilde’s heart is filled with sadness and regret...This is the tragedy and ironic(讽刺的) ending of “The Necklace”written by Guy de Maupassant(居伊..莫泊桑).

The story takes place in Paris. One day, Pierre gets an invitation to a palace ball. He thinks it important to him, and decides to go to the party with his wife Mathilde, a young woman who admires upper-class lifestyle very much.

65.Hearing the news, she gets worried and nervous instead of excitement and happiness, She is so poor that she has no new dress and no jewelry(珠宝) to wear, 66.她甚至可以想象她会被别人嘲笑。

Her husband spends 400 francs on a new dress and she herself borrows a diamond(钻石) necklace from her good friend Jeanne .67.这对夫妇在宫廷舞会上感到非常成功。But on their way home, she finds the necklace is no longer around her neck. They rush back to look for it. But they can’t find it .The young couple borrow a great deal of money and buy a necklace that is exactly like Jeanne’s. It costs them 36,000 francs.68.So they have to work day and night to pay back the money they have borrowed. After ten years of hard work to pay back all the money, Mathilde looks so old that Jeanne even can’t recognize her when they meet. When Jeanne hears the story, she tells Mathilde the necklace isn’t a real diamond necklace. It is worth 500 francs at most.

Vanity (虚荣)may lead to the loss of ourselves. Accept who we are ! 69. Be true to ourselves or others, and it will lead us to get happiness.

四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Chinatown is the name given to an area in the middle of London. It is a large Chinese community with a lot of Chinese restaurants, supermarkets and shops.

In the 1950s, it was a poor area and everything was very cheap. At the same time, the world rice market changed and thousands of farm workers in Hong Kong lost their jobs. They began arriving in London to look for work. They found jobs in the restaurants in this area.

These restaurant workers often worked 17 hours a day and had no time to learn English. As more Chinese arrived, more shops and businesses grew up. Wives came and joined their husbands and children came and joined their fathers. The community grew, and Chinatown was born.

In the 1970s and 1980s, British-born Chinese started to have a better education and this brought economic (经济的)success to the area. Many families moved out of Chinatown, and there was more space for businesses. Chinatown soon became a popular place for tourists.

Now everyone knows about London’s Chinatown. During the Chinese New Year, the streets are seen with flags and thousands of Chinese go into the streets. A.At the beginning of the 1990s.

  • 25、Jack thought himself a basketball fan. He watched quite a lot of American NBA basketball games. Not only did he watch them, he spent much of his free time playing on the court too. Then came the final year of his middle school. All of his regular teammates stopped showing up on the court because they were simply too busy preparing for the high school entrance exam to play. He was, of course, under much stress himself, like everyone else. A good exam result meant a good high school; a mediocre(平庸的)score meant a mediocre school. Much was at stake. However, he loved basketball so much that he still found time to play, this time with a group of guys who were said to have skipped classes(逃课)before.

Some of his teachers started worrying about him. They asked his mother to go to school to let her know that Jack was hanging out with problem kids. When his mother returned home that day, she wanted to talk to Jack. Knowing the purpose of her visit to the school, Jack thought his mother would punish him for befriending those bad guys. To his surprise, his mother was not angry with him at all. She wanted to hear her son's side of the story. So Jack told his mother about what he knew of Simon and Peter. Simon's parents were badly ill; Peter's father had lost his job. They both seemed to Jack to be normal kids. Jack's mother thought for a moment, then went on to say that she was OK with her son playing with them and that she and her son should think of ways to help these kids. Soon Jack's mum introduced some part-time jobs to Simon and Peter, which they accepted. She believed in her son and cared about those who were less lucky.

Jack's basketball friends and he have left for different places, but they still keep in touch. He knows Peter is now a manager of a local bank. Simon is currently a freshman at a university. Sadly, it is impossible to get together to play basketball again, but whenever they get on the phone, they talk about it all the time.

【1After Jack's mother came home from school, she .

    B. told him what his teachers had said

    C. asked him to keep away from problem kids

    D. was patient enough to listen to her son's words

    D. Jack must be influenced badly by problem kids.

    A. Peter's family are living much better.

    B. Simon is now studying at a university.

    C. Jack's mum understood him instead of blaming him.

    D. Jack's teachers wanted his mother to help his friends.

【4The main idea of the passage is to .

    A. make friends with problem kids

    B. keep in touch with friends all the time

    D. give up hobbies before the high school entrance exam

  • 26、   It has long been considered one of the best companies, but do you have what it takes to work for Google?

It may take a sharp mind, as an American author says that the search engine giant (搜索引擎巨人) asks its interviewees to answer difficult question.

William Poundstone believes that he has unlocked the secret of how to succeed in an interview at Google in a new book, Are You Smart Enough to Work at Google?

Poundstone lists several of the brain teasers (脑筋急转弯) that are said to be used by Google interviewers, from “can you swim faster in water or in syrup (糖浆)?” to “how would you weigh your head?”

Poundstone told ABC News that any Google’s questions are open-ended on purpose. The interviewer’s goal is to see how the thinking process of the applicant (应聘者) works, and to test his or her creativity when solving problems. He suggests the applicant should “retell the question” in their own words, as doing so gives them time to think and makes sure that they understand what is being asked.

    Some of Google’s brain teasers:

    * Why are manhole covers (下水道井盖) round?

    * How much toilet paper would you need to cover Texas?

    * You are shrunk (缩小) to the height of a nickel (五分硬币) and thrown in a blender (搅拌机).

The blades (刀片) start moving in 60 seconds. What do you do?

    * How much should you charge (开价) to wash all the windows in Seattle?

    * How many times a day do a clock’s hands overlap (重叠)

1What does it take to work for Google according to Poundstone?

A.A strong body. B.Hard work. C.A sharp mind. D.An open heart.

2What does the underlined word “unlocked” mean in the passage?

    A.探索 B.宣布 C.传播 D.破解

3What is it mainly about in William Poundstone’s new book?

A.How to test whether you are a smart person.

B.How to get a job in Google successfully.

C.What questions an interviewer should ask.

D.How to take part in interview training.

    4Why are Google’s questions open-ended?

A.To see the solving process the applicant uses.

B.Because those questions are not reasonable.

    C.To test the applicant’s knowledge.

D.To see whether the applicant can communicate well.

5What’s the best title for the passage?

A.Are you smart enough to work at Google?

    B.Poudstone’s work experience in Google.

    C.Some of Google’s brain teasers.

D.How the best company interviews applicants.

  • 27、   At a farm off Narrow Lane near Lexington, Kentucky, US, there is a little red barn (畜舍). The farm is mostly empty now. Jim Mahan and his family, who lived there for generations(世代),have moved to a different place in northern Fayette County.

But during the summer, the barn is filled with city kids who have come to enjoy the farm.

They're members of the Fayette County Livestock Club. In this club, children learn many skills, such as cutting wool and taking care of animals.

"A lot of Lexington kids don't know anything about farm life," said Adria Meier,17, who has looked after goats(山羊)and sheep for three years. "There is so much to learn. "

Children who take care of their goats and sheep at the little red barn must take a six-hour class before they get an animal of their own. They pay for their own animals but get special club programs for free, such as one that provides animal care.

Mahan lets the group use the barn for free. The kids spend up to three hours a day there during the summer.

There are valuable lessons learned along the way. For instance, don't cut the wool off your goats and sheep when there is wind. Sheep are social animals and they will cry loudly when they are separated.

"Looking after animals helps teach us responsibility. Unlike learning to swim or play soccer, caring for an animal isn't something you can simply abandon(遗弃),"said Carly Playforth.

1What do we know about Jim Mahan?

A.He is a member of the livestock club. B.He is the organizer of the livestock

C.He is the owner of the farm. D.He is a soccer coach.

2What can children learn in the Fayette County Livestock Club?

    a. cutting wool b. taking care of goats

    c. planting crops   d. having responsibility

    A.abe B.acd C.bed D.abd

3What should the kids do before they get animals?

    A.Attend a class. B.Pay certain money.

C.Care for animals alone. D.Provide special club programs.

4According to the last paragraph, what does Carly Playforth mean?

A.It's not necessary to learn to swim or play soccer.

B.Children learn to be responsible by looking after animals.

C.People can give up swimming or soccer easily.

D.Caring for animals is more important than playing sports.

5What would be the best title for the passage?

A.Kids' life on a sold farm B.A little red barn

C.Ways to look after animals D.A club activity of caring for animals
