四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   Do you have a lucky number? What is it? Many people have a special number that they hope will bring them good luck.

In Chinese culture, some numbers are believed to be lucky or unlucky based on the Chinese word that the number sounds similar to.

For example, the word for the number 8 sounds similar to the word for “making a fortune”. So, people consider it a very lucky number. Some people will even spend a lot of money to have 8s in their phone number or on their vehicle license plate(车牌照)number. The opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics began at 8:08 pm on Aug 8, 2008.

The number 9 is also a lucky number because of its connection to the emperors of China. There were nine dragons on emperors’ robes (龙袍)and Chinese myth held that the dragon had nine children. The number 9 also stands for “long lasting”. That’s why a man always proposes(求婚)to a woman with 99 or 999 roses.

So what’s an unlucky number in China? One example is 4. Many Chinese people see 4 as an unlucky number because it sounds similar to the character for “death”.

Because of this, many buildings skip(跳过)the fourth floor, and simply call it the fifth floor. In Hong Kong, some buildings even skip all floors numbered with 4, such as 4, 14, 24, 34 and all 40-49 floors. Some buildings also skip the 13th floor, as this is considered an unlucky number in the West. As a result, a building whose highest floor is 50 may have only 35 physical floors.

1What makes Chinese people believe a number is lucky or unlucky?

A.The shape of the number. B.The sound of the number.

C.The history of the number. D.The spelling of the number.

2Why will people spend a lot of money to have 8s in phone numbers or on vehicle license plate numbers?

A.Because they believe 8 will make them live forever. B.Because they believe 8 will bring good luck.

C.Because 8 is easy to remember. D.Because 8 stands for fashion.

3According to the passage, how do you like the number 9 in Chinese culture?

    A.terrible B.crazy C.positive D.worried

4A building whose highest floor is 60 in Hong Kong might only have________ physical floors if it skips all the unlucky numbers.

    A.35 B.44 C.50 D.60

5What is the story mainly about?

A.Lucky and unlucky numbers in Western culture. B.Meanings of different lucky numbers.

C.Meanings of different unlucky numbers. D.Lucky and unlucky numbers in Chinese culture.

As teenagers, you have many dreams, These dreams can be very big, such as winning the Nobel Prize, or they can be small. You may just want to become one of the ten best students in your class.

Once you find a dream, what do you do with it? Do you ever try to make your dream real?

Follow Your Heart by Australian writer Andrew Matthews tells us that making our dreams real is life’s biggest challenge.

You may think you’re not very good at some school subjects, or that it is impossible for you to become a writer. These kinds of thoughts stop you from getting your dream, the book says.

In fact, everyone can make his dream come true. The first thing you must do is to remember what your dream is.

Don’t let it leave your heart. Keep telling yourself what you want. Do this step by step and your dream will come true faster because a big dream is , in fact, many small dreams.

You must also never give up your dream. There will be difficulties on the road to your dreams. But the biggest difficulty comes from yourself. You need to decide what is the most important. • 27、   Most of us spend all day at school work. After a long and busy day, all we want to do is return to a comfortable home. Smart technology can turn any home into a nicer place to live.

Smart homes have been around for some time. Scottish company Pico Electronics invented type of technology called X10 in 1975.As the earliest smart home technology, it allows household devices (设备), such as lights and alarms, to communicate with each other by using radio waves.

Of course, 5G network connectivity has made smart homes much more sophisticated (复杂) than X10. Perhaps the most widespread smart home technology is the voice-activated (声控的) assistant. Google Home and Amazon's Alexa allow users to communicate with almost any device in their home simply by speaking a few words. This is especially convenient for children and people with physical disabilities, as they can finish tasks that would normally be too difficult, according to How-To Geek.

Common household appliances (电器) can become "smart" as well. For example, a smart trash bin can keep track of the things you've thrown away and place an online order for new items, while smart fridges can create dinner recipes (食谱) based on the vegetables that are being kept inside, according to HowStuffWorks.

But it's not just about convenience. Smart homes are also good for the environment. By regularly checking your energy use and automatically turning off lights and other devices that you're not using, smart homes can lower much electricity you use overall. Using less energy means that we use fewer natural resources, which is good for the environment.

1The earliest smart home technology is ________.

    A.X10 B.5G network connectivity C.the voice-activated assistant

2Which is NOT true about the voice-activated assistant?

A.It can turn your home into a nicer place to live.

B.It's normally difficult for children and people with physical disabilities to use it.

C.It may be the most widely used smart home technology.

3What can a smart fridge do?

A.Tell you how to cook. B.Place an online order. C.Create a dinner with the vegetables.

4What does the underlined word "automatically" mean?

    A.自动的 B.定时的 C.神奇的

5Which of the following is the best title for this passage?

    A.5G network changes the world

    B.Smart technology makes life convenient

C.Smart homes — a nicer way of living
