四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、If you are given only 1 yuan, could you live in a city for one day? It seems this may be a little difficult. But students from Xi’an did it.

On April 10, more than 60 students from the Middle School Attached to Northwestern Polytechnical University took part in the One Yuan Metropolis Survival. The charitable organization for teenagers called Imperceptible Education held this activity. Students not only have to live, but they also have to deal with a lot of hard tasks. It has happened in eight cities and is going to four others, including Beijing, in June.

To make money, many students looked for part-time jobs and saw how hard life was. Zhang Qiyue, 14, asked more than 10 restaurants for a job and finally got one chance. “We were sad when they said no. But gradually(逐渐地), we got used to it,” he said. After being a waiter for an hour, he got 25 yuan.

Some made use of their talents by singing and dancing in parks or shopping malls. Many people who walked by took notice and helped them. Zhao Jiacheng, 14, drew pictures and made paper crafts(手工). “This showed it’s important to learn a special skill,” he said.

Living was hard, but finishing the tasks wasn’t any easier. They went to different places to finish tasks in a short time. The most amazing one was when they had to exchange things worth thousands yuan with only a piece of paper in half an hour. “We learned how to persuade others. • 25、   Agatha Christie is possibly the world’s most famous detective(侦探的) story writer. She wrote about 80 novels, and her sales (4 billion copies of her novels) was over those of William Shakespeare. However, behind her works was a shy woman whose life was often lonely and unhappy.

She was born in 1890 in Devon, the third child of Clarissa and Frederick Miller, and grew into a beautiful and sensitive(敏感的) girl. She didn’t go to school but was educated by her parents. Her father taught her maths through stories and games, and her mother encouraged her to write by her own stories. Unfortunately her father died in 1901 when she was 11, and both she and her mother were very sad.

When World War I came in 1914, she became a nurse in a hospital, which was very useful to her later work. Many of the murders(杀人犯) in her books were carried out by a clever use of medicine, showing how much she had learnt about them as a nurse.

She wrote her first detective novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, in 1916. And it was published in 1920. In this novel she introduced Hercule Poirot, the Belgian detective who appeared in many later novels. Her other main detective was Miss Marple, who was from Agatha’s grandmother and her circle of friends. Christie’s stories keep the reader guessing who the murderer is until the very end of the story.

In 1914, at the beginning of the war, she married Archibald Christie, but the marriage was unhappy. It didn’t last and they left each other in 1926. It was a very difficult time for her, as her much-loved mother had died earlier that year. Agatha suffered a lot and one night she drove her car and disappeared.

She went missing for eleven days and was finally found in a hotel in Harrogate, in the North of England. Agatha only wanted staying alone but the newspapers had given her a hard time over her driving the car and disappearing. She decided never to let them enter her private life again

She enjoyed a very happy second marriage to Max Mallowan who she met in Baghdad and married in 1930. Her detective skills were a help to him in his work in Syria and Iraq. By successfully staying out of the newspapers, she found happiness with her husband. Her best novels were written after 1930, and she continued writing until 1973. She died peacefully in 1976.

1What does the underlined word “her” refer to?

  • 26、   Once upon a time the frogs decided to ask Jupiter, the king in Roman mythology(罗马神话), for a king of their own. Jupiter felt it funny. “Here you are,” he said, throwing a log(原木) of wood with a splash into the lake where they lived. “Here is a king for you.”

The frogs dived under the water in fright, going as deep into the mud as they could. After a time one of the braver ones swam carefully to the surface to take a look at the new king.

“He looks very quiet, “said the frog. “Perhaps he is asleep.” The log stayed quite still on the smooth lake and one by one more frogs came up to take a look. They swam closer and closer until at last they leaped(跳跃) right on top of it,quite forgetting that they had ever been frightened. Young frogs began to use it as a diving board; old frogs sat sunning themselves on it; mother frogs taught their tadpoles(蝌蚪) their first jumps on its bark(树皮).

One day an old frog said, “This is a dull kind of a king , you know. I thought we wanted someone to keep us in order. This one just lies around and lets us do what we please.” So the frogs went once more to Jupiter. “Can’t you give us a better king? ”they asked. “Someone who will be a bit more active than the one you sent before?”

Jupiter was not in a good mood. “Silly little animals,” he thought. “I shall give them just what they deserve this time.” He sent a long-legged stork() to the lake.

The frogs were very impressed and crowded admiringly round. But before they would even begin the speeches of welcome they had prepared, the stork stuck his long beak(尖嘴) into the water and began to eat up as many frogs as he could see.

That’s not what we meant at all,” gasped the frogs as they dived once more into the mud. But this time Jupiter would not listen. “I only gave you what you asked for,” he said, “Perhaps it will teach you not to complain about things so much.”

1How can we tell that the first king wasn’t frightening?

A.They swam carefully and looked at the king. B.No matter what the frogs did, the king kept still.

C.The tadpoles were scared to jump on the king. D.The king was sleeping and didn’t move at all.

2Why did the frogs ask for another king?

A.Because the frogs needed a frightening king. B.Because it controlled the frogs too much.

C.Because it was not active and did nothing at all. D.Because it was too bad to become a diving board.

3The sentence “I shall give them just what they deserved this time.” in Paragraph 5 means that .

A.Jupiter wanted to help the poor animals B.animals would get what they really wanted

C.animals should learn something by getting punished D.Jupiter was sad and tried to make them clever

4The underlined word “That” in the last paragraph refers to .

A.The stork killing many animals. B.The God making fun of them.

C.The second king being dull again. D.The second king being very popular.

5What can we learn from the story?

A.Don’t believe in Jupiter. B.All the frogs were stupid.

C.All kings are bad to the frogs. D.Don’t complain so much in life.

  • 27、   Florence Nightingale was born in a rich family in England. When she was young, she took lessons in music and drawing, and read many great books. She also traveled a lot with her parents. As a child she felt that visiting sick people was both a duty and a pleasure. She enjoyed helping them. At last she decided that she was going to be a nurse. But her father said, “Nursing isn’t the right job for a lady. ”

“Then I will make it so, ”she smiled.

And she went to learn nursing in Germany and France. When she returned to England, Florence started a nursing home for women. In the Crimean War in 1854, she went with a group of thirty-eight nurses to the front hospitals. What they saw there was terrible. Florence used her own money and some from her friends to buy clothes, beds, medicine and food for the men. Her only pay was the smiles of the wounded soldiers.
