四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   Pierre Dupin had delivered milk to the families on Prince Edward Street for thirty years. All who knew him loved him.

Every morning at five, Pierre arrived at the milk company’s stables, saying to Joseph, “Good morning! My old friend!” Then, the two started their day proudly. Without any order from Pierre, the wagon would roll down the street. The horse stopped at the first house. There, Joseph would wait perhaps thirty seconds for Pierre to get down off his seat and put a bottle of milk at the front door…

One day, the president of the company came to check the early morning milk deliveries. Jacques, the foreman(领班) of the stables, pointed to Pierre and said,“See how the horse listens and how he turns his head toward Pierre?”

“Yeah! But Pierre’s getting old.” said the president, “Tell him it is time he rested…”

But Pierre said, “My life will be nothing if I can’t drive Joseph every day. We are two old men! Let us wear out together. When Joseph is ready to leave, then I too will do so.”

Then one cold morning, after about two years, Jacques said, “Pierre, your horse, Joseph, didn’t wake up. Go over and see him.”

Pierre took one step forward, then turned. “No…no… You…you don’t understand, Jacques.”

Now, Jacques looked into Pierre’s eyes. He saw a dead, lifeless look in them. So he said, “Take the day off, Pierre!

Pierre stepped into the street. Then there came a warning shout and a screech(尖锐的刹车声)…

Five minutes later, a doctor announced, “Pierre’s dead…”

“I couldn’t help it.” the driver said, “Why, he walked as though he were blind?”

The doctor bent down. “Blind? Of course! This man has been blind for five years.” he turned to Jacques, “Didn’t you know that?”

“None of us knew.” Jacques said softly, “Only one…only one knew—a friend of his, named Joseph…”

1According to the first two paragraphs, we can know that ___________.

A.Pierre and Joseph worked well together

B.people on the street knew Joseph better than Pierre

C.Joseph knew the streets in the city better than Pierre

D.Joseph managed to deliver milk by itself even without Pierre’s company

A.he thought he was not old enough

B.Joseph couldn’t work without his help

C.he was unwilling to be separated from Joseph

D.people on the street couldn’t live without him

3The underlined sentences tell us that __________.

A.Jacques was surprised to find that Pierre couldn’t see anything

B.Pierre was too scared to take a last glance at his friend

C.Pierre was so sad because it was time for him to leave his job then

D.the death of Joseph drove Pierre to lose confidence for life

4We can infer from the passage that __________.

A.no one had ever known Pierre was blind

B.Joseph just served as Pierre’s guide after Pierre went blind

C.blindness didn’t make any difference to Pierre’s life at all

D.the president wasn’t quite satisfied with Pierre’s work

5The best title of the passage could be“__________”.

A.A Secret for Two B.A Lifelong Friend

C.I’m Your Eyes D.A Blind Man

  • 25、   Perhaps no one knows the power of imagination better than Chinese sci-fi writer Liu Cixin. Until four years ago, Liu worked full-time as a computer engineer at a power plant in Shanxi province. He only wrote science fiction in his spare time. But it was during this time that Liu's imagination took flight. He did what he might never have the chance to do in real life - wander in space, fight with aliens, and visit far away planets.

But even with such a powerful imagination, Liu, 55, probably didn't expect that he would become the first Asian to win the Hugo Award, science fiction’s highest prize, in 2015. Never did he think that former US president Barack Obama would read his novel The Three-Body Problem, and he would win the 20l8 Arthur C. Clarke Award for Imagination in Service to Society. It’s the first time that a Chinese writer has won the prize.

In his speech, Liu said that his imagination came from Arthur C. Clarke, a famous UK sci-fi writer. He said that reading Clarke’s classic novels had a great effect on him.

But no matter how far away Liu’s imagination takes him, somehow his novels always stay grounded (理性的).

In The Three-Body Problem, Liu tells a tale of aliens invading the earth. But unlike other alien stories, Liu talks more about relationships between people, rules of survival, and the meanings of life. And in The Wandering earth, Liu looks ahead to the day when our solar system comes to an end and humans have to look for a new place to live in. However, all his magination is based on reality. Liu’s works aren’t simply daydreams.

1What do we know about Liu Cixin?

A.He became a full-time writer when he was young.

B.He is the first Chinese winner of the Hugo Award.

C.He dreamed about wandering in space from childhood.

D.He is the first Asian to win the Arthur C. Clarke Award.

2What can we know from Liu’s speech?

A.His imagination was from Clarke's works.

B.He loves reading science fiction in his spare time.

C.He met a lot of difficulties when he started writing.

D.He has strong interest in the mysteries of the universe.

3Why did the writer mention The Three- Body Problem and The Wandering Earth ?

A.To tell the two books are both about real life.

B.To explain how Liu Cixin came up with his ideas.

C.To compare the different writing styles in the two books.

D.To show that Liu Cixin’s works are always based on reality.

4What is the main idea of the passage?

A.A new sci-fi style started by Liu Cixin. B.Liu Cixin’s achievement and his writing style.

C.The origin of Liu Cixin's powerful imagination. D.Liu Cixin’s experience of becaming a sci-fi writer.
