  • 24、   The novel coronavirus (新冠病毒) made this year’s Spring Festival holiday very different for most of us.

Many places in China began a first-level emergency (突发事件) response to the virus (病毒) in mid-January, calling for people to stay at home. Following these rules, most people gave up family gatherings (聚会) during the Spring Festival and canceled any festive celebrations.

“It’s the quietest Chinese New Year I've ever had,” Xin Jingrong, a 14-year-old student from Nanning, Guangxi told TEENS. For the first time in years, Xin’s grandmother had to cancel (取消) her trip to Nanning and stay alone in her hometown.

The control measures (措施) not only separate many families, but also make daily life inconvenient. Many shops are closed, delivery services (送货服务) are slow, and wearing masks (口罩) in public has become a must. But despite (尽管) the inconvenience, people are showing their understanding and cooperation (合作).

Tong Zexi, a 15-year-old student from Harbin, has not gone out in more than 20 days. “I know I need to protect myself and cause no trouble. In this critical (关键的) time, when one gets sick, many others could be affected (感染).”

On Feb 3, Zhao Junyan, a Junior 2 student from Shanghai, brought 15000 masks from Indonesia back to China, People’s Daily reported. Zhao, while traveling in Jakarta, collected the masks with his uncle, who works in the city. The 15-year-old donated (捐赠) all of the masks to Cangnan, Zhejiang, his hometown.

  • 25、   It was Thanksgiving morning and in the crowded kitchen of my small home I was busy preparing the traditional Thanksgiving turkey when the doorbell rang. I opened the front door and saw two small children in rags huddling(蜷缩) together inside the storm door on the top step. “Any old paper, lady?” asked one of them.

I was busy. I wanted to say “no” until I looked down at their feet. They were wearing thin little sandals, wet with heavy snow. “Come in and I’ll make you a cup of hot cocoa.”

They walked over and sat down at the table. Their wet scandals left marks upon the floor. I served them cocoa and bread with jam to fight against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started again on my household budget.

The silence in the front door struck me. I looked in. The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, “Lady, are you rich?”

    “Am I rich? Mercy, no!”

I looked at my shabby slipcover ( 家具套). The girl put her cup back in its saucer carefully and said, “Your cups match your saucer.” Her voice was hungry with a need that no amount of food could supply. They left after that, holding their bundles of papers against the wind. They didn’t say “Thank you”. They didn’t need to. They had reminded me that I had so much for which to be grateful.

Plain china cups and saucers were only worth five pence. But they matched.

I tasted the potatoes and stirred the meat soup. Potatoes and brown meat soup, a roof covered over our heads, my man with a good, steady job—these matched, too.

I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The muddy prints of small scandals were still wet upon my floor. Let them be for a whole, I thought, just in case I should begin to feel how rich I am.

1Why did the writer let the children in?

A.She showed great pity on them.

B.She had old papers to sell.

C.She knew them and wanted to make them a cup of coca.

A.she saw that the lady’s room was comfortable B.she saw the cups matched the saucers C.the writer’s slipcovers were very new   D.the boy thought so

3From the passage, we can infer that whether you are rich depends on .

A.how much money you have had B.how you feel about your life

C.how you have helped others D.what job you are doing

4The writer left the muddy prints of small scandals on the floor for a while to .

A.show her husband that someone had come B.remind her that she had helped two children

C.show that she was a kind-hearted woman D.remind her how rich she was

Training is over for the day, but one Boston Celtics basketball team coach is still working. Assistant coach Kara Lawson is on the team's court helping new player Carsen Edwards improve his game. He gets the ball into the basket several times and then runs over to her. “Thanks coach” Edwards says before exchanging a high-five with Lawson.

Lawson is one of a record high 11 women serving as assistant coaches among the 30 NBA teams.

“It's not a fad (一时风潮),” said former professional basketball player Nancy Lieberman. “It's opportunities going to very accomplished women who have given their life to the game.” Lieberman herself has broken down barriers as a player, as a coach in the WNBA, as head coach in an NBA minor league and as an assistant in the NBA. She says she quickly learned that building relationships was critical to easing gender (性别) barriers in the organization.

Players respect the women assistant coaches for their experience and knowledge of the game. Kara Lawson was a basketball star at the University of Tennessee and later won a WNBA championship with the Sacramento Monarchs. She also won a gold medal with the U.S women's basketball team at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing China. She retired from play in 2015. Earlier this year, she joined the Celtics as a coach.

One female assistant coach, Kristi Toliver, does double duty. She plays for the WNBA'S Washington Mystics. She also serves as an assistant coach to the NBA'S Washington Wizards team. “The biggest thing learned is to share your voice and what you’ve learned,” Toliver said. “Doing that has helped me communicate with my guys.”

Along with the record number of female assistants, five female referees (裁判) will be working NBA games this season. It's believed the NBA will soon have its first female head coach. Such a move would go a long way toward putting even more women in position to make decisions in the sport.

1What's the relationship between Carsen Edwards and Kara Lawson?

A.Player and coach. B.Student and teacher. C.Son and mother. D.Brother and sister.

2The underlined word “barriers” in Paragraph 3 means________ in English.

B.things that prevent or control progress or movement

C.quicker ways of doing something in order to save time or effort

D.abilities to control your fear in a dangerous or difficult situation

3The best title for this passage is________.

A.The more you know WNBA B.A woman assistant coach

C.Women work better than before D.Women serving as assistant coaches

4The women assistant coaches win the hearts of players for their________.

A.two roles of both a player and a coach

B.experience and knowledge of the games

C.kindness and being members at the Olympics

D.communication and positions to make speeches to the games

  • 27、Why Music Isn’t for Everyone?

They say music is universal, and it seems to be true since wherever we go, we see people listening, playing or dancing to it. We tend to think that music is larger than our cultural differences and shows the deeper connections between us.

But according to a recent study published in the journal Current Biology, music doesn’t speak to everyone. There is a condition, the researchers argue, called “musical anhedonia (音乐快感丧失)”. They say that those who have this condition lack the ability to experience pleasure from music.

For the study, 30 people listened to the same, mostly classical music pieces. They were then asked to complete a questionnaire on how they felt about the music. At the same time, the researchers measured their heart rate and skin reaction, which are considered physiological (生理的) measures of emotion.

According to the researchers, most of the people in the study got pleasure from the music. They had a quicker heartbeat and sweated (出汗) more. However, a small number had very little and even no pleasant feeling while they listened. These people had none or very few of the physical signs the others in the study experienced.

The researchers say that this means people have different abilities to enjoy music and that “there are people who specifically can’t enjoy music at all”, study author Josep Marco-Pallares of the University of Barcelona in Spain told Live Science.

To study the condition further, another group of scientists, at Columbia University, US, researched brain activities. They found that the key is the blood flow (血流量) to the reward system in the brain.

“People who got less pleasure from music had comparatively lower blood flow to areas involved in the reward system of the brain when listening to music,” reported the Daily Mail.

The lower blood flow makes it more likely that the brain’s “reward system” will be inactive. Thus, it will release(释放) less of the “pleasure chemical” dopamine (多巴胺). As a result, people get less pleasure from music.

If the research is correct, according to National Public Radio, there are simply people who just don’t get music. They may get pleasure from many things, but a good tune (曲调) isn’t one of them.

【1】What do we know about people with “musical anhedonia”?

A.They usually avoid listening to music.

B.They like to listen to certain types of music.

C.They believe cultural differences are larger than music.

D.They can’t feel the pleasure that music brings to others.

【2】What was the purpose of the study?

A.To learn what music people love most.

B.To learn how music influences people’s emotions.

C.To see whether music works in the same way for all people.

D.To understand the relationship between music and the body.

【3】What happened to the participants when they listened to music?

A.All of them had faster heartbeat and sweated more.

B.People who enjoyed music had more dopamine released.

C.They showed different physical signs as the music changed.

D.People who got less pleasure from music had higher blood flow.

Most parents believe it is difficult to help their children 2 science. But you don’t need3high scientific degree to teach your children science. All you need is that you’re willing to try, to see the world, and to take the time to encourage their natural curiosity(好奇心).

You can help by having an active attitude(态度)towards science yourself. Then start simply by 4 your children questions about the things you see every day. And then listen to their answers without judging(评判)them, which will improve5confidence, and help you decide just what your children know or do not know.
