六、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、You may have heard of the famous saying, "East or West, home is the best.” What does the word "home" mean to you? How do you say the word in French, in Chinese, in your language? Although people usually know what the word means, it sometimes has no exact translation(翻译). It's not surprising, because the idea of home is different from country to country, and from person to person. A home is more than a roof and four walls. It's the cooking, eating, talking, playing and sleeping that go on inside. And at home you usually feel safe and relaxed.

Homes look different in different countries. They also have different things inside. For example, in cold northern Europe, there's a fire in the living room or kitchen and all the chairs face it. In the south, where the sun shines a lot and it's more important to keep the heat out, there are small windows and cool stone floors.

We asked some people about their homes.

How often do people move house in your country?

"In my country many people don't stay in one place for a very long time. They often move every ten years or so. "

    -- Chery, Boston, USA

What are features (特征) of homes in your country?

"In Britain, even in town, there's always a garden. We have separate bedrooms and living rooms. But we don't often have balconies (阳台). The weather isn't warm enough! "

    --Pat, Exeter, England

1The word "home" sometimes has no exact translation because __________.

    A. no one knows what it is

    B. people can't understand each other very well

    C. people can't find this word in the dictionary

    D. it has different meanings in different countries

2According to the passage, at home, you can do everything EXCEPT __________.

    A. making friends   B. cooking and eating

    C. playing and talking   D. sleeping and relaxing

3Why is it important to keep the heat out of the houses in southern Europe?

    A. Because the sun there shines a lot.

    B. Because there's a fire in the living room.

    C. Because they wear heavy clothes all day long.

    D. Because they want to breathe fresh air outside.

4From the second paragraph, what kind of homes people have depends on __________.

    A. how old they are   B. the climate(气候)they have

    C. whether they are rich or not   D. whether they live in the city or countryside

5What can we learn from the passage?

    A. Homes look the same in different countries.

    B. Some Americans move house several times during their lifetime.

    C. People in Britain seldom have balconies because it's so hot outside.

    D. Houses in northern Europe have big windows and cool stone floors.

    Charles Dickens

One Christmas Eve, old Scrooge and Bob were working busily in his office. It was a cold, foggy day. The fog was so thick that the houses opposite were like ghosts. It was only three o’clock in the afternoon, but it was already quite dark.

“Merry Christmas, Uncle! God bless you!” cried a happy voice. It was Scrooge's nephew.

    “Bah!" said Scrooge. "Humbug(骗人的话)! ”

“Christmas is a humbug! Surely you don’t mean that, uncle.” said his nephew.

“I do.” said Scrooge “Merry Christmas! What reason have you got to be merry? You are poor.”

“OK, then,” replied the nephew cheerfully. “What reason have you got to be sad? You are rich. Don't be angry, Uncle!” said his nephew.

“What else can I be?” answered the uncle. "I live in a world of fools! Merry Christmas! What's Christmas time to you? It's a time for paying bills without money. It's time for finding yourself a year older, but not richer. Everyone who goes around saying “Merry Christmas” should have his tongue cut out. Yes, he should!"

“Uncle! Please don't say that!” said the nephew. “I've always thought of Christmas time as a good time, a kind, and a charitable happy time. And so, Uncle Christmas has never put any gold or silver in my pocket, but I think it has done me good. And it will do me good. And I say, God bless it!”

Bob, standing in the corner of the room, applauded( 鼓掌). He realized his mistake every soon, and went quickly back to his work, but Scrooge had heard him.

“Don't be angry with him, Uncle. Come and have dinner with us tomorrow.”

    “No.” said Scrooge.

“I'm sorry you don't want to cerebrate Christmas. But I do. So a Merry Christmas, Uncle!”

    “Good afternoon!” said Scrooge.

  • 24、Tara: Nicole, I have a problem.

    Nicole: What kind of problem?

Tara: I have a job interview tomorrow, and I heard that the boss will ask to see my Facebook profile. I’m not comfortable with that.

Nicole: That’s illegal in some countries, like Canada. Can you refuse?

Tara: I want to, but I’m afraid that if I do, I won’t get the job!

Nicole: I guess I see the boss’s point. Looking at a candidate’s Facebook page will tell him a lot about the person’s life and personality.

Tara: That’s true. Most of my life is on Facebook. My profile could tell him about my hobbies, my interests and what my friends think of me. I find the idea of showing a boss that much personal information disturbing.

Nicole: Companies run background checks on possible employees all the time. And this is just another way for him to see if you’re trustworthy. Besides, I’ve seen your Facebook page, and you don’t have anything to hide.

Tara: Maybe not, but my friends might still post things on my Facebook page that make me look bad.

Nicole: I think the boss will probably realize the differences between your posts and your friends’ posts.

Tara: He might, but I’m also worried that something the boss sees on Facebook could be misleading. For example, I wore a really crazy costume to my friend’s party last week. I wouldn’t want him to think I always do strange things like that.

Nicole: Yeah, but I don’t think the boss would assume that one picture shows how you always act. I’m sure he’ll be pretty cautious about drawing conclusions too quickly based on Facebook.

【1】How does Tara find the idea of showing a boss that much personal information?

    A.She thinks it great trouble.

B.She has decided to refuse it.

C.She is quite pleased with it.

D.She has no idea of it.

【2】What does Nicole want to express by saying “I guess I get the boss’s point”?

A.Nicole wants to help Tara get more reasons why the boss did so.

B.Nicole has just understood the boss’s real purpose.

C.Nicole would like to be a friend indeed.

D.Nicole will check Tara’s personal information for the boss.

【3】How can we understand the word “candidate’s”?

A.a person that has won something

B.a person who has long experience

C.a person with a record of failing

D.a person who is running for a position
