The teacher stepped off the platform(平台), passed by each of the students and said, “Smell again to see if the smell of the apple is still in the air.”
Half of the students raised their hands to show that they could smell it. The teacher returned to the front of the classroom and asked again if the students could smell the apple. Everyone raised their hand except one student. The teacher came to the student and asked, “You really can’t smell the apple?”
The student answered, “No, I can’t smell it. I don’t think it’s a real apple.”
The teacher smiled at the student and said to the class, “He is right! This is not a real apple.”

22、Table manners are how to behave when you eat a meal. They include how to handle knives, forks and spoons and how to eat in a polite manner. To behave well abroad, you should know some table manners.
EATING MANNERS
Japan: It is “perfectly” okay to slurp(发出啧啧的声音)when you eat noodles. Unlike making big noises, slurping slightly is not rude. Japanese also say it tastes better if you slurp.
Russia: Your wrists(手腕)should be placed on the edge of the table while eating, fork in the left hand, and knife in the right. It is not good manners to rest them on your lap. Keep your elbows off the table. Leave some food on your plate to show that the host has given you enough to eat.
France: Never discuss money or religion over dinner. What is different from the manners in Russia is that finishing everything on your plate is considered good manners.
Mexico: Whenever you catch the eye of someone who’s eating, even a stranger, it’s good manners to say “prove Cho”. It means enjoy. In Mexico, dining is more than a meal. It’s a social occasion-lunches are seldom quick and suppers can last for hours. Where you sit is very important in the country. Before you get seated, look for place cards, or wait until the host seats you. And you must say “enjoy your meal” before you leave the table.
DRINKING MANNERS
America: If you empty a bottle into someone’s glass, it obliges(迫使)that person to buy the next bottle. It’s polite to put the last drops into your own glass.
Australia: In a pub (酒吧), it’s usual to buy a round of drinks for everyone in your group. When it’s your turn, say “It’s my round.” When it’s their round, they will buy it for you. Don’t leave before you’ve bought a round.

23、 Having a husband means an extra seven hours of housework each week for women, according to a new study. For men, getting married saves an hour of housework a week. "It's a well-known pattern(模式)," said lead researcher Frank Stafford at University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research. "Men usually work more outside the home, while women take on more of the housework."
He points out that differences among households(家庭) exist. But in general, marriage means more housework for women and less for men. "And the situation gets worse for women when they have children," Stafford said.
Overall, times are changing in the American home. In 1976, women busied themselves with 26 weekly hours of housework, compared with 17 hours in 2005. Men are taking on more housework, more than doubling their housework hours from 6 in 1976 to 13 in 2005.
Single women in their 20s and 30s did the least housework, about 12 weekly hours, while married women in their 60s and 70s did the most-about 21 hours a week.
Men showed a somewhat different pattern, with older men picking up the broom(扫帚) more often than younger men. Single men worked the hardest around the house, more than that of all other age groups of married men.
Having children increases housework even further. With more than three children, for example, wives took on more of the extra work, clocking about 28 hours a week compared with husbands'10 hours.

A.Marriage gives men less freedom. B.Marriage has effects on job choices.
C.Housework sharing changes over time. D.Having children means doubled housework.
24、Musical Notes
An orchestra(管弦乐队) would face difficulty in making music together if each player did not know how long to hold each note(音符). Each instrument would start its own beat(拍子) or melody(旋律), and nothing would come together properly. Below is a chart of the most common types of musical notes. The chart tells how many beats per measure(每小节) each note should be held. The length of a measure determined(确定) by the time signature at the beginning of a piece of music.
Whole note | 4 beats per measure | |
