21、 It is said that “China is always well protected by the bravest(最勇敢的) of them.” Indeed, in the fight against the novel corona virus(新冠状病毒), it is medical workers who are risking their lives on the frontlines.
By Feb 17, more than 32,000 medical workers from all over China went to Hubei. They are working under unusual conditions, unimaginable stress and intensive(密集的) schedules.
In Wuhan mobile cabin(方舱) hospitals, doctors and nurses work for long hours, usually six hours in a row(连续). Many of them have deep marks on their faces from wearing tight masks and goggles(护目镜). To help them recognize(认出) each other, they write their names on their clothing. They also choose to wear diapers(尿不湿), as it takes nearly an hour to take their protective uniforms on and off. When they are racing time to save lives, every second matters. To cheer each other up, medical workers wrote good words on their uniforms, such as “Stay strong” and “Hope”.
Many doctors and nurses got the disease during the earliest period of the outbreak because of a lack of knowledge about the disease, as well as a shortage of medical supplies(供应). Some of them got well and went back to work. Some of them, unluckily, lost their lives. According to China’s National Health Commission, a total of 1,716 medical workers in China got the disease by Feb 11, while six passed away.
With the help of the central government, the working conditions for medical staff in heavily-impacted(受影响大的) cities like Wuhan have been improved. They are confident that they will win the fight against the virus.

22、 The most common disease in the world is the cold. It often starts with a sore throat(咽部疼痛). You sneeze and your nose runs. You usually have a headache, too. Often you have a cough later. It’s not a serious disease, but you can feel quite bad.
There isn’t good medicine for a cold, but you can take some medicine to make you feel better. It is good to rest, and to drink a lot of water, too. A doctor once told me, “With the right medicine, a cold will last for seven days. With no medicine, it will go on for a whole week!”
Where does our medicine come from? A long time ago, people found that some plants made them feel better. They ate leaves, roots, fruits or seeds of plants. We know the juice of lemons makes a sore throat feel better. In modern times, scientists have studied many plants, and found out what chemicals are in them.
Many kinds of our medicines today are made from those chemicals. There are some diseases that we can’t treat yet. But because of modern medicine, people now live longer than their grandparents.

23、In 1638, John Harvard donated some money and about four hundred books to a new university. This was the beginning of the library at Harvard University. The gift was so important that the university was named for John Harvard.
Thomas Bray began the first free lending library in the late 1600s. He set up more than 30 or these libraries in the American colonies. 24、 F1 is a very fast car race. It is one of the most popular sports in the world. The drivers go at over 300 kilometers an hour every race. But F1 cars didn’t always go so fast.
In 1895, the first F1 race began in France. During that race, it took the drivers 48 hours to finish 580 kilometers. In 1901, the best drivers had an average(平均) speed of 100 kilometers an hour. Modern grand prix(奖品) F1 racing began in 1950 in Britain. “Grand prix” is French. It means “large prize”. Today, 12 teams and 24 drivers race to get points. There are races at different tracks(路线) all over the world from March to October every year. There are also F2 and F3 racing. But the cars are slower and less high-tech.
During a F1 race, drivers have to make several stops to change tyres(轮胎) and put more petrol in their cars. A team of people do these tasks together to make the stops short. Some people lift the car up, others change the tyres. While this person works on the tyres, another person puts petrol in the car and a different person cleans the driver’s helmet. One more person talks to the driver about how to win. It’s amazing that all those people finish it in just a few seconds!
During 100-meter races, people count the players’ speed by 1/100th(0. 01) of a second, for example 10.81 seconds. In the world of car racing, however, the race has to be timed to 1/1000th (0. 001) of a second. That is 50 times faster than the time for a blink(眨眼).
F1 cars look very colorful. First, cars of different teams have different colors. Then there are a lot of advertisements on the cars.
