  • 21、To a regular person, Spitfire may look like just an ordinary dog, but to fans of the dock diving circuit, he is an incredible athlete in the same league as sport stars like Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant

Before COVH-19, eight-year-old Spitfire and his 16-year-old owner, Sydney, dominated the dock diving circuit like never before in the history of the sport. If you’re unfamiliar with the sport of dock diving, it’s essentially dogs running on a wooden dock and jumping as far or as high as possible before diving into a pool of water. And no dog did this better than Spitfire. Between 2016 and 2019, he broke 21 world records.

Spitfire came into the Mackey family in 2013. Back then, he was just an adorable dog with big eyes that Sydney instantly fell in love with. Sydney and her mother learned about dock diving in 2016, from a family friend who encouraged them to try it with Spitfire. In May of that year, they decided to give the sport a try and their pet proved to be a natural.

It wasn’t long after that very first jump that Sydney and Spitfire started making waves in the world of dock diving. They took the sport by storm and they dominated events across the United States like no team had ever done before. In three years, time, they broke many world records, and became known as an unbeatable pair of players.

Before he jumps into the air, the world’s best dock diver reaches a speed of about 30 miles per hour, and when he takes to the air he can reach a distance of 31 feet before hitting the water, or 8 feet 6 inches when he’s going for height. It’s no wonder they call him the flying dog.

But while Spitfire is undoubtedly the star of the show, most dock diving experts are convinced that despite his athletic abilities, he would have never reached his true potential without his young owner’s guidance. Sydney’s “Ready? Ready? Go, Go, Go!” pep talk to get Spitfire fired up has become famous on the dock jumping circuit.

【1】Why are Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant mentioned in the first paragraph?

A.To show Spitfire owns the same number of fans.

B.To show Spitfire’s incredible talent in basketball.

C.To show Spitfire’s excellent performance in sports.

D.To show the importance of sports stars to the league,

【2】At first, what inspired Sydney to try the dock diving with Spitfire?

    A.His friend’s encouragement.

B.His devotion to the dock diving.

    C.Spitfire’s good performance in diving.

D.The popularity of the dock diving.

【3】What can we learn about the dog and bis owner from the fourth paragraph?

A.They didn’t perform well at the beginning.

B.They achieved impressive results in the events.

C.They were ever defeated by other teams.

D.They seldom participated in the events in US.

【4】What do most experts think of Spitfire?

A.He can’t live up to the title of sports star.

B.He doesn’t obey his owner’s orders at times.

C.They doubt whether he has his athletic abilities.

D.Sydney’s guidance contributed to his achievements.

  • 23、It's hair-raising news for criminals on the run. Scientists behind a new study have worked out how to identify individuals only based on the proteins(蛋白质) in a single piece of their hair.

While the police already look at DNA from hair as part of investigations, the technique is far from ideal: DNA is easily changeable, meaning it can only be analyzed within a certain time period after the crime. But the new technique could even be used to solve historical or archaeological cases, making it far superior to DNA arrangement in many ways.

DNA change depends on several environmental factors including temperature, humidity and PH. It is also affected by the activity of bacteria and other microorganisms. In contrast, actual hairs can survive for a long time-----sometimes centuries. After bones and teeth, hair is in fact one of the most resistant structures of the human body.

In order to understand how the protein can be used to identify individuals, it is important to understand proteins are coded by DNA. This means that a certain level of the genetic variation that we see in different people's DNA passes into their proteins. In fact, genetic information in the DNA is translated into chains that make up proteins.

The method not only allows for human identification but it can also show how old the sample is and what region it comes from, so that we can distinguish between current and ancient samples. But while the discovery is exciting, the technique is not quite polished enough to be used in the court room. The main task now will be to analyze hair samples from all over the world, which will make it a lot more reliable.

The new discovery will promote the significance of hair as evidence in courts, at a time when some forensic(司法鉴定的) disciplines have been criticized in the US. It will also be of great use in archaeology.

1What's the main idea of the passage?

    A. DNA evidence is far from ideal.

    B. Criminals on the run get hair-raising news.

    C. Scientists are planning a test of human hair.

    D. Humans can be identified by proteins in hair.

2Which evidence is more reliable for the police to identify a criminal?

    A. Lost teeth   B. The footprint.

    C. Personal belongings   D. Damaged DNA.

3In what way is the new technique superior to DNA test?

    A. Serving as evidence in courts.

    B. Possessing genetic information.

    C. Inferring the height of a person.

    D. Distinguishing the region of a person.

4What will scientists do in the following few years?

    A. Test hair samples worldwide.   B. Legalize the hair evidence.

    C. Apply protein-test to archaeology.   D. Map the structure of DNA.

    5Who will welcome the discovery?

    A. Criminals.   B. Employers.

    C. Hairdressers.   D. Archaeologists.

  • 24、   Experts say farmers will need to produce about 70 percent more food by the middle of the century. They predict that 9 billion people will need to be fed worldwide by 2050. The prediction means experts will need to develop more effective farming methods that cause less harm to the environment to produce more food. Experts say living things called bacteria could help achieve that goal. A bacterium is an organism. It is so small that it can be seen only with a microscope.

Researchers are finding extremely small organisms in the ground. One gram of soil contains between 100 million and one billion bacteria. Bacteria are taking part in a healthy ex- change with the plants that share the soil. Around plant roots, bacteria change chemicals in the air and soil into food for the plants. The bacteria include the material known as fungi(真菌). Some bacteria act as bodyguards. They produce anti-bodies and other chemicals to fight harmful bacteria.

Plants make sugar through a process called photosynthesis (光合作用).This happens when a plant receiving light changes water and carbon dioxide into food. Much of the sugar is pumped down through the roots. There, it is turned into sugar-based food and released into the soil. That is done to get bacteria to help the plants grow better. Some of the organisms turn chemicals in the air and soil into food that the plants can eat.

The biosciences company Novozymes already sells one kind of fungi. It has found a way to produce it in very large quantities and offer it to farmers as.a bio-pesticide (生物农药).A bio-pesticide protects crops from animals and bacteria. If so, farmers can harvest more crops.

1What do the experts’ statistics in paragraph 1 show?

A.Bacteria have a good effect on farming.

B.There will be more harmful bacteria in 2050.

C.There's no need to worry about the problem of future food.

D.More food will be needed to feed more people in the future.

2What's the connection between plants and bacteria according to paragraph 3?

A.Bacteria can't live without plants. B.Plants get benefit from bacteria .

C.They make sugar cooperatively. D.They compete for more sunshine.

    3What does Novozymes do?

    A.It sells crops and animals.

    B.It beautifies the environment.

C.It provides farmers with materials free of charge.

    D.It produces fungi as a bio-pesticide.

4What is the best title for the text?

A.Crops of High Quality Need Developing

B.Bacteria May Help Meet Food Needs of the Future

C.A Large Quantity of Farmland Should Be Improved

D.Diseases and Pests Can Be Controlled in the Future

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Jack tossed(抛,扔)the papers on my desk—his eyebrows knit(皱眉)into a straight line as he glared at me.

    “What’s wrong?” I asked.

He pointed at the proposal. “Next time you want to change anything, ask me first,” He said, turning on his heels and leaving me in anger.

How dare he treat me like that, I thought. I had changed one long sentence, and corrected grammar, something I thought I was paid to do.

It’s not that I hadn’t been warned. Other women who had worked my job before me called Jack names I couldn’t repeat. One coworker took me aside the first day. “He’s personally responsible for two different secretaries leaving the firm,” she whispered.

As the weeks went by, I grew to hate Jack. His actions made me question much that I believed in, such as turning the other cheek and loving your enemies. I prayed about the situation, but to be honest, I wanted to put Jack in his place, not like him.

One day another of his episodes left me in tears. I stormed into his office, prepared to lose my job if needed, but not before I let the man know how I felt. I opened the door and Jack glanced up. “What?” he asked abruptly.

Suddenly I knew what I had to do. After all, he deserved it.

I sat across from him and said calmly, “Jack, the way you’ve been treating me is wrong. I’ve never had anyone speak to me that way. As a professional, it’s wrong, and I can’t allow it to continue.”

Jack snickered(暗笑)nervously and leaned back in his chair. I closed my eyes briefly. God help me, I prayed.

“I want to make you a promise. I will be a friend,” I said. “I will treat you as you deserve to be treated, with respect and kindness. You deserve that. Everybody does. That’s what friends do.” I slipped out of the chair and closed the door behind me.

    注意:

    1. 续写词数应为150左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Jack avoided me the rest of the week.
