二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、There will be more plastic than fish in the world’s oceans by 2050. That is what a new report from the World Economic Forum and Ellen MacArthur Foundation warns. If the current trend continues, the report said, oceans will contain one ton of plastic for every three tons of fish in 2025. By 2050, plastics will weigh more than fish. The problem is that each year at least 8 million tons of plastics end up in oceans around the world. This is the same as dumping the contents of one garbage truck into the ocean every minute.

Not all plastic ends up in the ocean because someone throws a plastic bottle into the water. Plastic containers and other trash thrown onto streets and sidewalks often are swept into oceans. Unlike other types of trash in the ocean, the plastic never bio-degrades. There is a way to slow the amount of plastics going into the oceans — people can recycle more. Currently only about 14 percent of plastics are recycled. Research in Europe shows as much as 53 percent of plastic could be recycled using available technology. The report says that another solution is using less plastic for packaging products. But that is not likely to happen.

“Given plastic packaging’s many benefits, both the possibility and desirability of an across-the-board dramatic reduction in the volume of plastic packaging used is clearly low, ”the report said. But the authors note reducing the use of plastics should be tried“where possible. ”For decades, scientists warned that plastics are killing fish. Research shows that fish are dying from choking after eating plastics. Another cause of death is that plastics cause“intestinal blockage and starvation, ”the environmental group said.

【1】Why is the garbage truck mentioned in Paragraph 1 ?

A.To explain how plastics end up in the ocean.

B.To warn people against the ocean pollution.

C.To clarify the seriousness of the problem.

D.To point out some details of the report.

【2】Why is plastic more dangerous than other types of trash?

A.There is too much of it.

    B.It poisons the ocean water.

    C.It is from different sources.

D.It is hard to break down.

【3】What is the author’s attitude to the suggested solutions?

    A.Pessimistic.

    B.Curious.

    C.Unconcerned.

    D.Terrified.

【4】What can we infer from the text?

A.People are not aware of the problem.

B.Recycling is limited by lack of technology.

C.Plastic packaging has become part of our life.

D.Fish in the ocean will be replaced by plastics.

  • 22、As people are becoming more socially conscious about where their food comes from and how it impacts the planet, they are choosing animal-free plant-based options. Cow-free meat has been around for quite some time and the popularity of brands of the cultivated (培育的) meat is rising. While there are a large number of plant-based milk substitutes (替代品), none of them have the same taste of cow’s milk. Now, a food-tech company created real dairy products without harming a single cow or the planet.

The company stresses that their product produced in the lab is not a milk substitute but rather is the real deal. And it is very healthy. The company also says that the lab-produced milk tastes identical to the real thing and they hope to eventually replace cows by creating every dairy product sold. They expect to roll out plant-based cheese and yogurt in addition to milk. “Our company was founded with the mission to stop using animals to produce our food because, as dairy lovers, we realize that giving up on milk is not an option,” John said. “But today’s milk comes with an unreasonable price tag. The dairy industry is destructive to our planet, our health, and our animals, simply not sustainable (可持续的) anymore. ”

The environmental price tag of dairy farming is way too high. According to the World Wildlife Fund, dairy cows add a huge amount of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere and contribute to global warming and climate change as well as pollute the air around them. Dairy operations consume large amounts of water and run-off of manure (粪肥) and fertilizers from these farms get into local waterways. The production uses only 5 percent of the resources and produces only 1 percent of the waste of producing cow’s milk according to the company. And they accomplish this by being 100 percent cruelty-free unlike dairy farms.

【1】What’s the main difference between the food-tech company’s milk and other milk substitutes?

    A.Its price.

    B.Its popularity.

    C.Its output.

    D.Its taste.

【2】What can we know from John’s words in paragraph 2?

A.We’re willing to accept the prices of cow’s milk.

B.We’re supposed to close up the dairy industries.

C.The company aims to produce animal-free food.

D.The company intends us to give up milk completely.

【3】What does the underlined word “them” probably refer to in the last paragraph?

    A.Dairy cows.

    B.Dairy operations.

    C.Local waterways.

    D.Greenhouse gases.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A.Healthier Milk, Rising Popularity

    B.Making Milk without Cows

    C.Fresher Milk, Better Taste

    D.New Milk Saves Planet

  • 24、Soaring to 29, 035 feet, the famous Mount Everest had long been considered unclimbable due to the freezing weather, the obvious potential fall from cliffs and the effects of the extreme high altitude, often called “mountain sickness.” But that was to be changed by Edmund Hillary.

When he was invited to join the British Everest expedition in 1953, Edmund Hillary was a highly capable climber. The glacier-covered peaks in his hometown in New Zealand proved a perfect training ground for the Himalaya. It was his fourth Himalayan expedition in just over two years and he was at the peak of fitness.

On May 28, 1953, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, an experienced Sherpa (夏尔巴人), set out and reached the South Summit by 9 a.m. next day. But after that, the ridge (山脊) slightly fell before rising suddenly in a rocky spur (尖坡) about 17 meters high just before the true summit. The formation is difficult to climb due to its extreme pitch because a mistake would be deadly. Scratching at the snow with his ax, Hillary managed to overcome this enormous obstacle, later to be known as the Hillary Step.

At 11: 30 a. m., the two men found themselves standing at the top of the world. “Not until we were about 50 feet of the top was I ever completely convinced that we were actually going to reach the summit.” Hillary later recounted, “Of course I was very, very pleased to be on the summit, but my first thought was a little bit of surprise. After all, this is the ambition of all mountaineers.”

Emerging as the first to summit Mount Everest, Hillary continued by helping explore Antarctica, and establishing the Himalayan Trust (信托基金), through which he provided a number of beneficial services to the Himalayan peoples. He also left a sizeable legacy that mountain climbers have chased ever since. As a young climber said, “It was not just Hillary and Tenzing that reached the summit of Mount Everest. It was all of humanity. Suddenly, all of us could go.”

【1】What made Edmund Hillary a capable climber on the 1953 expedition?

A.A steep spur of rock Hillary conquered.

B.An ax Hillary used to scratch snow.

    C.A mistake Hillary avoided making.

    A.Overwhelming joy.

    B.A touch of astonishment.

    C.Complete disbelief.

    D.Enormous pride.

【4】What was the impact of Hillary’s achievement on mountaineering?

A.It led to friendly regulations for mountaineering.

B.It left financial benefits for climbers to pursue.

C.It enabled him to give back to his hometown.

D.It opens up possibilities for other climbers.

  • 26、阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文.

After six hours of fishing, John Franklin and his sister Jane were ready to call it a day. It was 7 pm. The summer sun was setting, and the fishes had stopped biting. But Jane’s 12-year-old son Conrad was having so much fun that he begged “Let’s do just one more run,” Since the mild weather was holding out, why not? John turned the boat around and headed back.

Yet, you never knew. They hadn’t even cast their lines when the wind picked up suddenly. Rough waves began battling against the little boat. “Check your life jackets and hold the boat!” John shouted, As Jane and her son were on the point of screaming, two big waves rolled over, one right after the other. Within a few seconds, the boat tipped(倾斜). Backward and turned over, throwing three of them into the water.

Out of the worst, the luckiest thing was that they had life jackets on and the boat didn’t sink immediately. Everyone grabbed onto it. “Let’s get back in the boat, Mommy,” Conrad cried, trembling with fear.

“Don’t panic. People know we’re out here,” Jane comforted him. “They’ll send help soon.”

Treading(踩) the water, the adults exchanged worried looks. They were floating in the middle of nowhere. “I knew we were in a tight spot,” said John, a third-generation commercial fisherman who, like Jane, had been raised on the bay.

When a strong wind blew through about half an hour with no sign of dying down, they had to make some decisions. It had been a perfect July day, with the water at a temperate 20 degrees centigrade, but everyone was cold by 9 pm.

If they weren’t rescued soon, they might not survive the night, John recognized, but the closest shoreline was about three miles away, starred by only a few glowing house lights.

    注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答.

Looking at the lights in the distance, John asked his sister in a low voice, “Should I do it?”
