22、 China became the first country to clone a monkey using non-reproductive cells, reducing the need to keep lab monkeys and paving the way for more accurate, effective, and affordable animal tests for new drugs .
By December of 2017, Chinese scientists had created two clone macaques named "Zhong Zhong" and "Hua Hua" by nuclear transferring of somatic cells -- any cell in the organism other than reproductive cells. This was the similar technology used to create the famous clone sheep Dolly in 1996.
"Cloning a monkey using somatic cells has been a world-class challenge because it is a primate(灵长类)that shares its genetic makeup, therefore all of its complexity, with humans." Pu Muming said.
"For drug and other lab tests, scientists have to purchase monkeys from all over the world, which is costly, bad for the environment and produces inaccurate results because each monkey might have different genes, " Pu said.
"By cloning monkeys using somatic cells, we can mass produce large numbers of genetically identical(相同的)offspring in a short time, and even change their genes to suit our needs," he added. "This can save time, cut down experiment costs, and produce more accurate results, leading to more effective medicine."
"This achievement will help China lead the world research in an international science project related to neural(神经的)mapping of primate brains,," he said. However, bio labs from the United States, Japan, and European countries are also very able, and they will quickly catch up to China after the monkey cloning technology is made public, Sun added."This means we have to innovate(创新)continuously and work extra harder this year to stay ahead," he said.
【1】What is special about China's cloning monkey?
A. It transferred cells in the lab.
B. Il creates two monkeys at a lime.
C. It adopts a method of embryo splitting.

D. To find a cure for mental diseases.
【3】What Sun said in the last paragraph suggests____
A. they are determined to catch up to America
B. they try to avoid competition from other countries
C. they aren't satisfied with what they have achieved
D. they have to keep the monkey-cloning technology a secret
23、Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people are anxious and self-conscious; that is, they are concerned with their own appearance and actions too much. Negative thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: What kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes?
It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must affect people unfavorably. A person's self-concept is reflected in the way he or she behaves and the way a person behaves affects other people's reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a deep effect on all areas of their lives.
Shy people, who have low respect, are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need faith that they are doing "the right thing". Shy people are very sensitive to criticism. It makes them feel inferior(自卑). They also find it difficult to be pleased by praises because they believe they are unworthy of praise. A shy person may respond to a praise with a statement like this one: "You're just saying that to make me feel good, I know it's not true.” It is clear that, while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful.
Can shyness be completely got rid of, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determination since shyness goes hand in hand with lack of self-respect. It is important for people to accept their weakness as well as their strengths. Each one of us has his or her own characteristics. We are interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our chances for a rich and successful life.
【1】The first paragraph is mainly about ________.
A. the cause of shyness
B. the effect of shyness on people
C. the feelings of shy people
D. the questions in the minds of shy people
【2】According to the writer, self-awareness is ________.
A. harmful to people
B. a weak point of shy people
C. the cause of unhappiness
D. a good characteristic
【3】What is the shy people's reaction to praise?
A. They are pleased by it.
B. They feel it is not true.
C. They are very sensitive to it.
D. They feel they are worthy of it.
【4】We can learn from the passage that shyness can ________.
A. block our chances for a successful life
B. help us to live up to our full development
C. enable us to understand ourselves better
D. have nothing to do with lack of self respect
24、Almost every month, a new piece of research appears linking diets high in processed “junk” foods with obesity and poor health. It isn’t yet clear if they have a cause-and-effect relationship. But deeper research is starting to appear from trials that compare diets which are based on either extremely processed foods or wholefoods (天然食品), yet are carefully matched for nutrients in all other ways.
The links need investigating (调查) as a matter of urgency. If these processed foods really do carry essential health risks, it could mean that official advice about healthy eating has been aiming at the wrong target for decades. In almost all high-income countries, nutrition guidelines say the key to healthy eating is avoiding too much fat, salt and sugar.
While many types of processed food contain significant quantities of these not-well-thought-of ingredients (成分), not all do, and there are wholefoods that are also high in some of them. Red meat and some dairy products come with their share of fat, for instance. It is still unclear if it is better to switch to “healthier” low-fat versions of processed foods, or to cook from scratch, whatever the ingredients.
Equally not clear is what action governments should be taking. Some campaigners are now calling for higher taxes on factory-made foods. That would be controversial, however, because these foods make up to 60 percent of people’s diets in countries such as the UK and the US. Additionally, any price increase is likely to hit lower-income households hardest, many of which consume more of such products because processed foods can be cheaper than making meals from their original ingredients, and the cost difference is even greater if you take into account the time taken to cook from scratch.
Rather than taxation, a most practical approach may be for schools to start teaching pupils how to make quick and simple home-cooked meals. This approach would take many years to bear fruit, as the encroachment (侵蚀) of processed foods into Western cuisine took place over decades. It isn’t going to be completely changed overnight.
【1】What can be learned about processed foods?
A.They are more nutritious than wholefoods.
B.They can help avoid being overweight and unhealthy.
C.They have less fat, salt and sugar than wholefoods.
D.They don’t necessarily carry such high health risks.
【2】How does the author develop paragraph 3?
A.By giving reasons.
B.By listing facts.
C.By answering questions.
D.By showing a study result.
【3】What’s the author’s attitude towards higher taxation on processed foods?
A.Favorable.
B.Tolerant.
C.Opposed.
D.Carefree.
【4】What will be the future of processed foods?
A.They will be over-taxed.
B.They will still exist in people’s diets for some years.
C.They will be removed from Western cuisine.
D.They will be replaced by home-made meals soon.
