二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Sandra Bullock turned 51 last month. But because she looks exactly the same as she did in Miss Congeniality, a movie filmed back in the 20th century, everyone calls her “ageless.” Bullock is just one of a number of stars in their 40s and 50s who’ve had birthdays recently but have not gotten older, unlike the rest of us in their age group. Take Halle Berry. One website put a photo of her 20 years ago next to one of the newly 49-year-old Berry and dared us to choose which was which. “This Is What 49 Looks Like,” it said. Seriously, if that’s what 49 looks like, I must be 71.

However, even a generation ago, famous faces evolved. Look at a picture of Grace Kelly at age 52 in the early 1980s. She looks like a beautiful middle-aged woman. Today she’d look old for her age.

The goal now is to prevent aging while you are still young, using all the magical nonsurgical options medicine has to offer. Eventually these techniques will become less expensive, and ordinary people my daughter’s age will have them. Already anti-aging is starting to be considered maintenance, like coloring your hair. My friends and I find ourselves openly debating techniques that we used to make fun of. Does fat-freezing work? How much time do you have to spend in the gym to keep the body of a 35-year-old after 50? It’s all so exhausting. But members of the next generation have it tougher. They’ll have to ask themselves whether they want to spend their youth trying not to get old. I’ve already seen “Sexy at 70” headlines. Will everyone be expected to go to their graves(坟墓) looking hot?

I also have to wonder what else we are slowing along with age. How do you move on if you’re working so hard to stay the same? And besides, if you’ve known the ache of watching a daughter pack up for college, you know you can’t stop the clock.

    【1】In the author’s eyes, Sandra Bullock ________.

    A. doesn’t deserve her name

    B. doesn’t look her age at all

    C. behaves like a young woman

    D. looks younger than Halle Berry

【2】The example of Grace Kelly is given to show ________.

    A. physical beauty never lasts long

    B. there is no such thing as agelessness

    C. people’s attitude towards aging has changed

    D. stars pay too much attention to their appearance

【3】Where do the author’s concerns about anti-aging techniques lie?

    A. They expose people to danger.

    B. They make people feel stressful

    C. They are too expensive for ordinary.

    D. They encourage comparisons among people.

【4】What’s the purpose of the text?

    A. To show the burden of youth.

    B. To offer tips on how to look hot.

    C. To advise people to accept aging.

    D. To comment on some famous stars.

  • 22、Researchers are placing robotic dogs in the homes of lonely old people to determine whether they can improve the quality of life for humans.Alan Beck, an expert in human-animal relationship, and Nancy Edwards, a professor of nursing, are leading the animal-assisted study concerning the influence of robotic dogs on old people's depression, physical  activity, and life satisfaction.“No one will argue that an older person is better off being more active, challenged, or stimulated(刺激),”  Edwards points out.“The problem is how we promote that, especially for those without friends or help.A robotic dog could be a solution.”

In the study, the robot, called AIBO, is placed for six weeks in the houses of some old people who live alone. Before placing AIBO in the home, researchers will collect baseline data for six weeks. These old people will keep a diary to note their feelings and activities before and after AIBO.Then, the researchers will review the data to determine if it has inspired any changes in the life of its owner.

“I talk to him all the time, and he responds to my voice,” says a seventy-year-old lady.“When I'm watching TV, he'll stay in my arms until he wants down.He has a mind of his own.”

The AIBOs respond to certain orders. The researchers say they have some advantages over live dogs, especially for old people.Often the elderly are disabled and cannot care for an animal by walking it or playing with it.A robotic dog removes exercise and feeding concerns.

“At the beginning, it was believed that no one would relate to the robotic dog because it was metal and not furry,” Beck says.“But it's amazing how quickly we have given up that belief.”

“Hopefully, down the road, these robotic pets could become a more valuable health helper. They will record their masters’ blood pressure, oxygen levels, or heart rhythms.AIBOs may even one day have games that can help stimulate older people's minds.”

【1】The purpose of Beck and Edwards’ study is to______.

    A. understand human-animal relationship

    B. find the causes of old people’s loneliness

    C. make lonely old people’s life better

    D. promote the animal-assisted research

【2】In the research, the old people are asked to______.

    A. note the activities of AIBOs

    B. keep AIBOs at home for 12 weeks

    C. analyze the collected information

    D. record their feelings and activities

【3】What is the advantage of AIBO over live dogs?

    A. It can watch TV with its owner

    B. It can help the disabled people

    C. It responds to all the human orders

    D. It is easier to keep at home

【4】The author seems to suggest that the future robotic dogs may______.

    A. keep old people active

    B. cure certain diseases

    C. change people's beliefs

    D. look more like real dogs

  • 23、Rising through Stages to Realize Ourselves

Many modern people have the problem that they don’t know who they are and what their purpose is. 【1】 Once high school seniors graduate, they seem to lose their identity. They once studied hard, but after they stop working, they begin to lose their way.

In the theory of the Hierarchy of Needs, Abraham Maslow put forward a similar situation, which consists of the five levels of a person’s need. The fifth and final level is self- realization, which is where our final achievement lies. 【2】

I think self-realization has three major aspects. The first stage is acceptance, the second stage is discovery and the last stage is perseverance.

Acceptance is the first stage. We should be reminded that we are all born unique, so we all have our own strengths and weaknesses. 【3】 Being objective and yet tolerant is the key to acceptance.

Once we’ve accepted ourselves, we can discover what we are interested in and what we want to be. Many people tend to go along with social expectations. 【4】 So before we start working towards a purpose, we should ask ourselves “Is this what we truly desire?” and “Is this going to change the situation we’re in?”

The last stage is perseverance. 【5】 Those who can self-realize are people who focus on the things they want to change.

Through the three stages, we could gain recognition of ourselves. And by this point, whatever our lives were like, we would be able to stand tall, confident of ourselves.

A.It’s nothing to a man of perseverance.

B.But indeed we should live for ourselves.

C.Only by acceptance of the past can we change it.

D.This is especially common among college students.

E.It is the process of knowing ourselves and finding a purpose.

F.Exploring our potential isn’t going to be done in a short time.

G.Only when we understand these can we pursue them or change them.

  • 24、They follow you in the street. They ask you for money and they don’t leave you alone when you try to say no. They are the aggressive street-working, fund-raising charity workers, otherwise known as “chuggers”.

The term “chugger” is a combination of two words, “charity” and “mugger”. Chuggers often work in the street. They set up a stall with information about the charity they represent, and they try to get you to donate money to the charity. Typically, they prey on your feelings of guilt, greeting you with questions such as, “Do you care about the planet?” or, “When was the last time you did something for someone else?”

But a survey of their strategies has found that some charity volunteers are far from charitable. “Many chuggers simply refuse to back off when asked to do so,’’ said Brian Jones, a spokesperson for a charity watchdog (监察人). “One of the problems is that some chuggers say they are working as volunteers,” he added. “However, they aren’t really. Most of the 50 chuggers we spoke to showed little interest in anything other than raising the maximum amount of cash in the minimum amount of time. They get paid from this so it makes sense. Also, a fifth of fundraisers had no visible ID and almost a quarter failed to give clear information about the cause they were representing. By employing chuggers who break the law, tell lies or refuse to leave members of the public alone, charities undermine the trust we all instinctively have in them.”

But Shirley Bosworth, chief executive of the Institution of Fundraising, said face-to-face fundraising remains “an appropriate and effective method”. “It enables charities to engage with a particular demographic of donor, and it means that charity and donor can enter into a dialogue about what the charity does and how the donor’s money will be used,” she explained.

1What do chuggers do according to the passage?

    A. They rob money of strangers.

    B. They cheat you into buying things.

    C. They ask you to donate money for charities.

    D. They hurt your feelings by asking questions.

2What’s the third paragraph mainly about?

    A. The survey of charity volunteers.

    B. The problems with charity volunteers.

    C. The basic information about charity volunteers.

    D. The attitude Brian Jones takes toward charity volunteers.

3What does the underlined word “undermine” may probably mean?

    A. betray

    B. strengthen

    C. build

    D. weaken

4How does Shirley Bosworth feel about what chuggers do?

    A. It’s useful.   B. It’s disgusting.

    C. It’s absurd.   D. It’s popular.
