二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   It was during a school trip to the Art Gallery of NSW that I realized I was not white.

Aged eight, rough and noisy like any child travelling to an exciting place miles away from their own home, I was seriously reminded by a supervising teacher to stay in one place. To ensure this happened, and that I did not escape to a closed-off exhibition area the minute her eyes turned elsewhere, she forced me to hold the hand of a quiet, modest girl in my class, the typical teacher’s pet.

Already feeling incredibly self-conscious, the moment took a turn for the worse when a fellow classmate eyed our interlocked hands. With a finger pointing accusingly towards us, he said, “God, I can see her hand turning black already.”

That night I came home and cried in the shower. My own secret purchase of a Dove beauty bar failed to wash off the thick layer of dark grime (污点) onto my skin. For the first time I was forced to confront the vast valley between who I thought I was and who I actually was.

Race proceeded to become something I struggled with all throughout adolescence. In stories like these, the climax (高潮) usually comes during university. To an extent, that was true.

In your hands today is an edition that celebrates stories like mine, of lives and experiences informed by race.

While race is the source of many of our struggles, it is also the location of our characteristics, dearest stories, and most loved people. We have come to understand life better from our race. As people coming from an ethno-cultural (种族文化的) minority, our race informs, but does not single-handedly define, who we are.

1Why did the teacher ensure the author stayed in one place?

A.She punished the author because the author was not white.

B.She was happy to see the author and the girl hand in hand.

C.She was afraid the author would be laughed at by her classmates.

D.She was afraid the author would run to a forbidden exhibition area.

2When did the author realize what the race meant to her?

A.The moment the boy said her hands were black.

B.The minute the teacher required her to stay still.

C.The moment she bought a Dove beauty bar secretly.

D.The night the bar couldn’t wash off the dirt from her skin.

3It is inferred from the text that_____________.

A.she struggled hardest during her college years

B.she fought for those who were treated in an unfair way

C.she realized who she actually was during her adolescence

D.she struggled against the prejudice all her life

4Which of the following can be the title of the passage?

A.Race Is Everywhere B.Race Taught Me a Lot

C.Minorities Are the Best D.Race Defines Who We Are

  • 22、Crown shyness (树冠羞避) is a mysterious natural phenomenon in which the crowns of some tree species do not touch each other, but get separated by a gap clearly seen from ground level. The effect usually occurs between trees of the same species, but has also been observed between trees of different species.

There are many theories going around, most of which make sense, but no one has been able to prove without the shadow of a doubt why some trees avoid touching each other.

In his 1955 book Growth Habits of the Eucalypts, Australian forester M. R. Jacobs writes that the growing tips of the trees are sensitive to abrasion (擦伤),which results in crown shyness phenomenon. This theory was also supported by Dr. Miguel Franco. Some experiments have shown that if trees displaying crown shyness are artificially prevented from swaying (摇摆)in the wind and touching each other, they gradually fill up the gaps between them.

But while the above theory is arguably the most widespread, it's certainly not the only one. Some scientists have suggested that crown shyness is a mechanism to stop the spreading of leaf-eating insects. The gaps mean pests wouldn't be able to reach other trees, so they are the tree's natural defense method.

One Malaysian scholar studied many trees, but found no traces of abrasions, despite their clear crown shyness. Instead, he suggests that the growing tips of the trees were sensitive to light levels and stopped growing when they got too close to other trees. Plants are able to sense how close they are to other plants and in order to get more light, they give off some chemical to stop other trees from growing too close.

Whatever the reason, one thing is for sure, plants are more intelligent than people.

1What can we know about crown shyness?

    A. It can cause abrasion between trees.

    B. It only happens between the same species.

    C. It has been discovered for only half a century.

    D. No agreement has been reached about its real cause.

2What will happen if trees showing crown shyness are stopped from swaying?

    A. The trees will stop growing and even die.

    B. The gaps between the trees will grow wider.

    C. The crown shyness phenomenon will disappear.

    D. The gaps between the trees will remain the same.

3What does the underlined word “mechanism” in paragraph 4 probably mean?

    A. Tip.   B. Way.

    C. Theory.   D. Plan.

4Which statement might the Malaysian scholar agree with?

    A. Trees have special ways to attack others.

    B. Some insects stop trees growing too close.

    C. Trees compete with their neighbors for light.

    D. Trees won't touch each other to avoid diseases.

  • 23、Overspending can be defined as spending beyond one’s means, and is not rarely seen nowadays. According to a recent report, more than one-fourth of adults surveyed in 2020 had one or more bills that they were unable to pay in full that month.

While every individual’s spending habits are unique to their circumstances, a few common potential issues tend to be responsible for overspending.

Lifestyle creep, a financial trap, where you spend more money as you make more money, for example, often accounts for unrecognized overspending. Individuals that lack a decision-making process for making purchases can also find it difficult to control their spending.

Media and advertisements can also lead to overspending. Marketing strategies aim to create a feeling of scarcity (稀少) for consumers with phrases like “almost sold out” or “two tickets remaining” when they are making online purchases. Emails from favorite sellers can give consumers the impression that they are saving money by taking advantage of a sale, and roadside billboards can lead individuals to make impulsive (冲动的) purchases.

Social pressures to enjoy dinners out and vacations with family and friends may be a push for younger people, who see others enjoying these activities through social media platforms like Instagram. “People think spending makes you happy,” Elizabeth Dunn, professor at the University of British Columbia and chief science officer at Happy Money, says. “But for many people, it’s these values of being true to yourself that make you happy.”

Dunn notes that, “Failures in self-control in the finance can cause dire consequences. Financial stress, for example, has been linked to physical health struggles, problems in close relationships, and stress in retirement.”

“Dealing with overspending should start in bite - size pieces. Small and manageable changes over time are more likely to stick to in the long run. Instead of relying on willpower, setting specific goals and building a foundation with a budget is an effective way.” adds Dunn.

【1】Why is a recent report mentioned in paragraph 1?

    A.To explain what overspending is.

B.To stress the harm of overspending.

C.To tell a way to stop overspending.

    D.To show overspending is common.

【2】What do paragraphs 3~5 mainly talk about?

    A.Possible causes of overspending.

    B.Typical unhealthy spending habits.

    C.Some unavoidable financial traps

    D.Issues resulting from overspending.

【3】What does the underlined word “dire” in paragraph 6 probably mean?

    A.Pleasant.

    B.Controllable.

    C.Terrible.

    D.Acceptable.

【4】What is Elizabeth Dunn’s advice on overcoming overspending?

    A.Making a reasonable budget.

    B.Relying on personal willpower.

    C.Setting grand and general goals.

    D.Starting changing on the whole.

  • 24、It is August 1939, and a group of frightened children are boarding a train at Prague’s Wilson Station. Their heartbroken parents do not join them. Indeed, they fear they may never see their children again. But they know that their children will live. These are among the 669 children, most of them Jewish, that Nicholas Winton will go on to save from death at the hands of the Nazis (纳粹).

Nicholas Winton was born on 19 May 1909 in London, to German-Jewish parents. The family later took British nationality. On leaving school, Winton worked in banks in Germany and France. He returned to Britain in 1931, where he worked in business.

In December 1938, a friend asked Winton to come to Prague to aid people who were escaping from the Nazis. In Prague, Winton saw people living in terrible conditions and whose lives were in danger. He decided to help transport children to safety in Britain. He established an office to keep records of the children, and then returned to Britain to find temporary homes for them. He used donated funds and his own money to pay the 50 pounds per child that the British government required. By August 1939, Winton had saved 669 children.

During World War II, Winton served as an officer in Britain’s Royal Air Force. He left the military in 1954. He then worked for international charities and for various companies. For the most part, he did not mention the children he saved, and his actions soon disappeared from people’s memories.

That all changed in 1988 when his wife Grete found a forgotten journal at home. The journal contained photographs and names of the children and addresses of the families that took them in. She sent the journal to a newspaper, and that year Winton was seen on the British television programme That’s Life. At one point, the host asked people in the audience to stand up if Nicholas Winton had saved their lives. A shocked Winton watched as the majority of people rose to their feet. The programme brought his actions to public attention, and Winton became a respected figure around the world.

【1】Which of the following is the correct order to describe Winton’s life according to the text?

① He saved 669 children from death at the hands of the Nazis.

B.Winton’s actions of saving 669 children’s lives were held back on purpose.

C.Winton didn’t expect that most of the live audience were those who he had saved.

D.His wife brought Winton’s actions to public attention.

【3】Which of the following can describe Winton’s personal qualities?

    A.Sympathetic.

    B.Intellectual.

    C.Adventurous.

    D.Patriotic.

【4】The passage is probably followed by a concluding paragraph about ______.
