21、 All Luciano Faggiano wanted when he purchased the seemingly unremarkable building was to open a restaurant. The only problem was the toilet. Sewage (污物) kept backing up. So Mr. Faggiano asked his two sons to help him dig a trench (沟) and uncover the problem. He predicted the job would take about a week. “We found some underground rooms, so we kept digging,” said Mr. Faggiano, 60.
One week quickly passed, as the father and sons discovered a tomb of the Messapians, who lived centuries ago. Soon, the family discovered a room used to store grain by the ancient Romans.
Mr. Faggiano did not initially tell his wife about the extent of the work. His wife soon became suspicious (怀疑的).“We had all these dirty clothes, every day,” she said. “I didn't understand what was going on.”
After watching the Faggiano men pull away debris (碎片) in the back seat of the family car, neighbors also became suspicious and informed the authorities. Officials arrived and stopped the digging, warning Mr. Faggiano against operating an unapproved archaeological (考古的) work site. Mr. Faggiano responded that he was just looking for a sewage pipe.
A year passed. Finally, Mr. Faggiano was allowed to continue his search for the sewage pipe on condition that officials observed the work. An underground treasure house came into view, as the family uncovered ancient vases, an ancient ring with symbols and more. Today, the building is the Faggiano Museum, an independent archaeological museum authorized by the government.
Mr. Faggiano is now satisfied with his museum, but he has not forgotten about the restaurant. A few years later, he finally found his sewage pipe. It was, indeed, broken. He has since bought another building and is again planning for a restaurant. “I still want it,” he said of the restaurant. “I'm very stubborn.”

22、 Exercise may hold the key to youth, according to a study published on Monday which showed people who keep fit are up to nine years biologically younger than those who do not. The findings are the first to show in humans how keeping fit affects the ageing process.
The study of 2,40twins found that a sedentary(久坐的)lifestyle raises the risk of a range of problems from heart disease to cancer and appears to play a key role in the ageing process.
It all appears to boil down to(归结为)the length of structures called telomeres(染色体终 端)---which protect the DNA on the chromosomes(染色体),the researchers from King's College London wrote in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
Many studies have shown telomeres get shorter over time, suggesting the cells are ageing or dying. The study, which extracted (提取)a DNA sample from their volunteers, found people who exercised more each week had longer telomeres.
Exercise lowers the risk of a range of problems such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer, the researchers said. “It is not just walking around the block. It is really working up a sweat." said Tim Spector, a genetic epidemiologist who led the study, in a telephone interview.
The study found people who exercised energetically 3 hours each week had longer telomeres and they were 9 years biologically younger than people who did under 15 minutes.
Spector's team, who also adjusted for body weight, smoking, economic status and physical activity at work, also said moderate(适度的)exercise for 1-2 hours each week provided a four- year advantage.
Studying twins also provided a unique opportunity to judge the effects of exercise on people with the same or similar genetic make-up. the researchers said.
The reason why exercise has this effect is not clear but the researchers said they believe physical activity somehow defends against the natural process called oxidative stress (氧化应激反应).which damages and kills cells.
【1】What is the risk of sedentary lifestyle?
A.It can cause diseases.
B.It can make our cells alive.
C.It can lengthen telomeres.
D.It can keep us fit.
【2】What do we know from the text?

23、Personality used to be a one-per-customer deal: like it or not, you were who you were, and lying to a pen pal was about the closest you could get to have a different ego. That was then. With the appearance of MySpace, Facebook, and other social networking sites, a second, carefully crafted identity is now available to anyone with an Internet connection. And that has psychologists wonder: just how well do these online personalities match the person sitting at the keyboard?
The answer, it turns out, is pretty well. In a recent study of 133 undergraduates with Facebook profiles, University of Texas psychologist Samuel D. Gosling measured the correlation between personality tests online and off, and found — contrary to the assumption that social networking sites can’t capture one’s features—that the students represented themselves quite faithfully.
Gosling surveyed the group on a standard five-point personality test, which measures extroversion (外向性), agreeableness, sense of responsibility, emotional stability, and openness to new experiences. Then he rated the same subjects based only on their Facebook profiles, which usually included photos and lists of interests, from academic majors to favorite books and movies.
Gosling found a correlation between assessments in four of the five categories, with emotional stability as the only one showing no significant results across personal and online assessments.(Gosling says he was not surprised at the latter, since emotional stability is something that people are good at hiding across most media.)While extroversion showed the highest correlation, the study suggests that “openness to new experience” is perhaps better conveyed online than in person.
“Facebook users don’t tend to put a lot of personal information on their pages, ” Gosling says, so someone who posted touching personal stories, for example, might come off as oversharing without intending to.
In short, says Gosling, Facebook users aren’t generally using the site as an image buffer, a resume enhancer, or a separate self. “They just use it as a medium for social life.”
【1】What is the usual assumption about social networking sites?
A.They provide good study platforms.
B.They contain totally fake information.
C.They couldn’t show one’s real nature.
D.They are friendly to various personalities.
【2】Which showed no connection between personality tests online and off?

A.True personality beautifies image.
B.The site is a medium for social life.
C.Only cheats invest in a false identity.
D.Various interests can be shared there.

A.To introduce a finding.
B.To offer a recommendation.
C.To defend a viewpoint.
D.To present a phenomenon.
24、We all have different ways to navigate (导航) when lost—whether asking a stranger for help, consulting an old-school map or simply following our nose. But on a bike, the risks are higher. One wrong turn or that you’re in a traffic jam with two lanes between your bike and the nearest pavement may ruin your good mood. Although cyclists, of course, managed to navigate before smart phones, cyclists can make two choices: a few stay calm and embrace getting lost, and the rest turn to a navigation app.
Google Maps added a directions function for cyclists in 2015 in the US and Canada, and two years later across Europe. And while there are dozens of other apps now offering a similar service, Google Maps has the demerits for many, so the app seems to be falling behind expectations.
As someone with no sense of direction, I knew it wouldn’t be easy when I started cycling earlier this year. I appreciated that the app gave me two warnings before I needed to turn off a road, and automatically recalculated my route if I accidentally went off course. But still, it wasn’t a smooth process. Google Maps thought I could cut across a double carriageway with no breaks in its barrier, assumed I knew what it meant when it told me to “head west”, and thought nothing of taking me the wrong way down a busy one-way street.
Cyclists don’t just want safety—they want convenience. Londoner Robson Smith regularly cycles between Clap ham and the City of London and would like to see Google Maps calculate routes where his bike is allowed on public transport and more choice of the type of routes he can take. “Google tends to calculate the most common and comfortable cycle routes. It would be better to have an option which included the fastest route, regardless of comfort,” he says.
For this reason, Robson says he uses the app Cycle Streets instead. It offers a choice of four different route modes, based on the type the user wants, and saves previous routes. It also tells you how many calories a route burns, how many traffic lights you wilt encounter, and how busy it is.
【1】What higher risks may happen to cyclists according to Paragraph 1?
A. Losing the way to their destinations.
B. Making wrong plans about the directions.
C. Staying still in the same place for a long time.
D. Taking wrong turn or being caught in a traffic jam.
【2】What does the underlined word “demerits” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Defence. B. Shortcomings. C. Existence. D. Techniques.
【3】What’s Robson’s opinion on Google Maps?
A. It needs improving.
B. It is difficult to operate.
C. It can provide convenient courses.
D. It offers the most common and fastest route.
【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. The Different Apps in Navigation
B. The Rise and Fall of Google Maps
C. The Disadvantages of Google Maps
D. Planning the Future of Google Maps
