二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、The term“underemployment”has three related meanings. In one sense, it refers to a situation in which someone with excellent job qualifications(资格) is working in a position that requires less qualifications, as for instance in the case of a lawyer driving a school bus. In the second sense, it means working part-time when one would prefer to be working full-time. In the third sense, it is a form of over-staffing(人浮于事) in which employees are not being fully made use of.

All forms of underemployment have effect on the economy and the health of the business community. Long- term underemployment can also cover up the truth behind the employment situations. When nations collect employment statistics, they usually come up with a base number of “unemployed”individuals, using that number to judge the health of the job market. This number does not include part-time workers looking for full- time jobs, as they are considered employed, and it also doesn’t reflect workers who are underpaid, considering their qualifications.

In the first sense, underemployment is a common problem in many of the developed world. Many people with college degrees are working in low-level or service industry jobs because the job market is full.

The issue of part-time employment is also very serious. Some people are forced into part-time jobs, while others find themselves taking a part-time job because nothing else is available, even though they really need to work full-time. This problem is especially common in areas with seasonal employment, where employers find it cheaper to maintain and lay off part- time staffs, rather than keeping a full staff at all times.

In the sense of shortage of workers, underemployment appears in a variety of situations. Some companies maintain a full staff to be prepared for seasonal work, or to keep well- trained, qualified workers so that they will be available when needed. Labor laws and union pressures may also prevent a company from cutting down on staff or working hours, leading to a situation in which people report to work , but have nothing to do.

1The purpose of the passage is   .

    A. to show underemployment is becoming more serious today

    B. to explain the meaning of “underemployment”

    C. to imply women are laid off more than men

    D. to tell the present economic situations

2According to the text, underemployment means   .

    A. the same meaning as the word—unemployed

    B. people who do manual work for wages

    C. qualified workers get a low salary

    D. employees are not fully made use of.

3When it comes to unemployment statistics,   .

    A. it implies the people who are jobless

    B. the underpaid workers are included

    C. the part-time employees are included

    D. it shows the employment situation of a country

4Which of the following is NOT TRUE to the 4th and 5th paragraph?

    A. People with college degrees sometimes take a part-time job.

    B. Underemployment only occurs in advanced countries.

    C. Part-time staffs seem to benefit from firms less.

    D. Companies need full-time staffs indeed.

    5Some companies maintain a full staff   .

    A. to compete with others in the future

    B. to disobey labor laws and union pressures

    C. to get the skilled workers paid

    D. to make preparations for seasonal work

  • 22、   Cetaceans(鲸目动物) communicate through sound to find food and to interact socially. Their sounds vary between species and within communities. The long-finned pilot whales can mimic (模仿) artificial noise, but nobody had previously recorded them. A new study, however, found overlap in the cetacean sound book.

Pilot whales and orcas(虎鲸),the two largest species of cetaceans, are often seen in the same environments and are similar sizes, and both live in social groups with strong union, says Charlotte Cure, a researcher at CEREMA Lab in France, who was not involved in the study. Orcas compete for food with long-finned pilot whales and are potentially their predators.

Evidence from orca stomachs shows they do occasionally eat pilot whales. But pilot whales can mob(成群田住) and chase them away, the only cetaceans seen defending themselves from the strong enemies in this way.

Mimicry could serve as additional defense; “One assumption is that if they use similar sounds, they may not be recognized as prey," Erbe says. Pilot whales eating orcas' food remains might go unnoticed if they use orca-like calls. “This is all underwater," she adds, “so these animals rely on sound for detecting their prey and predators.”Long-finned pilot whales have shown an ability to distinguish between orca calls with different meanings; Cure suggests that instead of tricking orcas, the callers could instead be presenting a new orca sound to other group members.

Additional work would confirm whether mimicry is actually occurring. Researchers could pair their listening data with direct observations of the animals' interactions in the wild or perhaps even play orca sounds and watch the whales' reactions.

But if a future experiment used predatory sounds, it would need to be done. very carefully.“A reaction to a predator can be very strong," Cure says.“In some protected areas, you are not allowed to do more than two predatory playbacks per year."

【1】Which of the following is NOT shared by the pilot whales and orcas?

    A.They communicate through sound.

B.They often live in the same environments.

C.They can defend themselves through mimicry.

D.They always live together with other group members.

【2】What do we know from the fourth paragraph?

A.The pilot whales mimic the sounds to detect their prey.

B.The pilot whales only mimic one kind of the sounds of the orcas.

C.The pilot whales can pretend to be orcas to share the food remains.

D.The pilot whales can distinguish different meanings of orca calls to trick them.

【3】How do the researchers confirm whether mimicry is actually occurring?

A.By observing the whales from the distance.

B.By mimicking the sounds in the experiment.

C.By analyzing the data from the cetacean sound book.

D.By listening or playing the sounds and watching the whales' reactions.

【4】Which can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.Pilot Whales: Copy Orca Calls

B.How Orcas Mimic Pilot Whale Calls

    C.How Pilot Whales Defend Themselves

D.Orcas and Pilot Whales: Predators and Prey

  • 23、   Atoms and molecules in the air move constantly. 1 In high-pressure systems, the molecules inside the system move faster than those that surround it. The opposite occurs in low-pressure systems, where the air inside the low is moving more slowly than in the surrounding area.

Air flows around a high-or low-pressure system in much the same way as water swirls (旋涡) around a hole. In the Northern Hemisphere, air that moves into a high-pressure system flows outward in a clockwise pattern. Air flowing upward in a region of low pressure moves counterclockwise. 2

Air is more dense (密集的) in a region of high pressure, so the air pushes out toward less dense regions. The air mass begins to warm as it goes down, which prevents the formation of clouds. The presence of clouds indicates that rain may be present in the air. 3 In a region of low pressure, the air rises. As it does, the air mass cools and clouds form from the humidity (湿气) inside the air mass.

4Once the droplets are heavy enough, they fall to the ground. When temperatures are warm, rain is the result. If temperatures are low? the result is snow. When water droplets fall through relatively warmer or colder air masses on the journey to Earth, the low- pressure system may bring snow or ice.

Rain associated with low-pressure systems holds true in much of the Northern Hemisphere. 5 So in tropical areas, rain association with highs or lows is less predictable.

    A.This movement creates air pressure.

B.So we can predict rain from the clouds.

C.But the air pressure changes little in tropical climates.

D.The higher the air pressure is, the faster the winds blow in and outwards.

E.Humidity in the rising air of a low-pressure system becomes water droplets.

F.This swirling air results in winds around or near the high-and low-pressure boundaries.

G.High-pressure systems have light or no clouds, indicating fair weather without rain.

  • 24、One Sunday in 2021, when my son, Leo, was six, we ran into one of his friends, Izzie. They decided to play ——but what? “I have a great idea,” Leo said. “Let’s fall in love! OK?” Izzie took a half-second to consider this proposal, then replied “No.” She wanted to play tag.

Leo has always been the kind of child who looks for close connections, often in the wrong places. It sometimes feels as though he’s been looking for a soulmate since he was a toddler(学步孩童).

One day, he came home from school and immediately grabbed his iPad to ask Siri: “Can you fall in love when you’re just a kid?”

Siri, Apple’s voice-controlled personal assistant, is great at opening apps or setting alarms, but I was unfamiliar with her philosophies on love.

“What did Siri say?” I asked him.

“She said, ‘Here’s what I found on the web!’” Leo reported.

This was hardly the first time I’d heard Leo in conversation with Siri. Over the years, he’s relied on Siri as a source of comfort, advice, emotional support, and guidance. Their relationship blossomed when the pandemic forced us all to shelter in place.

At first, Leo mostly asked Siri factual questions, then the personal ones. As time passed, he began to engage on more existential matters. Siri has, in some ways, been able to absorb some of Leo’s concerns—in a way that, as his mother, I can’t, at least not with the same coolness.

Children are overwhelmed with emotions such as grief, fear, love, and a desire for connection. If Leo’s talks with Siri confronted me with the unknowable and unanswerable, they also made me frustrated at my own limitations as a parent.

There are many challenges to parenthood, among which the biggest is the desire to shelter our children from the painfulness of reality. But helping our children navigate reality is surely more helpful than sheltering them from it. Perhaps the best we can do is give them a tablet?

I’m afraid I don’t have the answer. Maybe I should ask Siri.

【1】What does the author want to illustrate by mentioning lzzie?

    A.Leo’s longing for intimacy.

    B.Leo’s close bond with lzzie.

    C.Leo’s eagerness to have fun.

D.Leo’s effort to make new friends.

【2】What would Leo ask Siri when they first talked?

A.Siri, have you ever been in love?

B.Siri, what is your favorite hobby?

C.Siri, what does it mean to be alive?

D.Siri, how many stars are in the Milky Way?

【3】Which word best describes the author’s attitude to Siri?

    A.Curious.

    B.Disappointed.

    C.Appreciative.

    D.Worried.

【4】What does the author suggest parents do when raising children?

    A.Be a good role model.

    B.Promote independence.

    C.Communicate effectively.

    D.Practice positive discipline.
