  • 21、Is Doodling (涂鸦) Good for You?

Doodling is drawing lines, shapes, etc, especially when you are bored or thinking about something else. Some people believe that drawing random patterns and designs during meetings and lectures shows you aren’t listening or paying attention.【1】They show that doodling may be beneficial.

【2】It used to be seen as a product of absent-mindedness. However, a modern article on the Harvard University website has discussed the idea that random drawings may assist you in keeping memory and focus.

The article mentioned above highlights that26 of 44 American presidents were known to Doodle. with Ronald Reagan famous for drawing cowboys. A 2009 study conducted by psychologist Jackie Andrade asked 40 people to listen to a “dull and odd” voice message.【3】 Those people who did were able to recall 29%more of the information contained in the message

Some experts believe that embracing your creative and artistic sides during meetings may keep your mind active. Jesse Prinz, a famous professor of philosophy, actively encourages his students to doodle. He believes that doodling is the “sweet spot of attention”. And it may not just be good for your concentration. An artist known as Mr Doodle has made a career out of his doodles【4】.

So random drawing to aid concentration may be becoming more of a thing.【5】So next time you see staff members casually drawing pictures during a meeting, it may be a sign that they are listening more than you think.

  • 22、More investors are supporting a biotechnology company working on ways to bring back animals that have died off. Some scientists, however, are doubtful such research efforts are possible-or even a good idea.

Colossal Biosciences first proclaimed its plan to bring back a hairy ancestor of today's elephants, known as the woolly mammoth, two years ago. Recently, the company said it wanted to bring back the dodo bird: a large, flightless bird.

The dodo is a symbol of man-made extinction. The last dodo was killed in 1681 on the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius.

The possibility of bringing the dodo back is not expected to directly make money. But the genetic tools and equipment that the company develops to try to do it may have other uses, including for human health care.

The dodo's closest living relative is the Nicobar pigeon, said Beth Shapiro, a scientific advisor with the bioscience company. She has been studying the dodo for 20 years. She is a professor at the University of California.

Shapiro's team plans to study DNA differences between the Nicobar pigeon and the dodo to understand “what are the genes that really make a dodo a dodo,” she said. The team may then attempt to change Nicobar pigeon cells to make them seem like dodo cells. It may be possible to put the changed cells into developing eggs of other birds, such as pigeons or chickens. Then the birds might create young that could naturally produce dodo eggs, said Shapiro. The idea is not yet fully developed.

Shapiro said animals are a product of both their genetics and their environment-which has changed a lot since the 1600s. She added, “it's not possible to recreate a 100% identical copy of something that's gone.”

Other scientists wonder if it is even a good idea to attempt to recreate species that have died off. They question whether such efforts take attention and money away from attempts to save living species.

A.The theory of recreating the dodo.

B.The closest living relative of the dodo.

C.The difficulty of bringing back the dodo.

  • 23、When did you last write a letter? Properly write on—by hand? In a digital world, where sending a text or email is far more convenient than using snail mail, is the writing on the wall for traditional pen and paper? Well, some people claim that writing still has many benefits, so maybe it's not time to ditch your ballpoint(圆珠笔)or fountain pen(钢笔)yet.

These days, when people request things in writing, a typed, electronic document will be accepted. Doing this on a computer means it could be saved, edited, copied and sent via email. But crafting a handwriting document is unique: It requires planning and thought, and, as well as practising your handwriting, it helps you to remember spelling and punctuation.

Some experts believe your brain benefits from using old-fashioned pen and paper. This is particularly relevant for students, where typing notes into a laptop is thought to lack the "tactile feedback"(触觉反馈)to the brain that contact between pen and paper docs. BBC Worklife website quotes Hetty Roessingh from the University of Calgary, who says that "taking notes by hand involves cognitive(认知的)engagement in summarizing, adapting, organizing. concept and vocabulary mapping. Others agree that handwriting may boost fine motor skills in your hands and fingers.

There are everyday benefits to using pen and paper too. Scribbling(涂狗)notes, shopping lists or messages on the back of an envelope can still be useful, quick and portable. But putting pen to paper in a letter to a friend or loved one can probably have the most impact. Pen pal writer Katherine Moller told the BBC: "In a world where it is so easy to hop online to email or to send a fast text, it is so personal and so precious to know someone chose to turn off the virtual world to spend some time with you."

So, while digital skills remain important, don't write off your pens and pencils yet—especially if your smartphone, tablet or laptop runs out of power!

【1】What does the underlined word "ditch"mean in the first paragraph?

    A.Write.

    B.Abandon.

    C.Save.

    D.Choose.

【2】What does the writer want to emphasize in Paragraph 2?

    A.The popularity of electronic documents.

    B.The convenience of electronic documents.

C.The special features of handwritten documents.

D.The basic requirements of handwritten documents.

【3】Which of the following is the benefit of writing by hand?

A.It fully develops your hand muscles.

B.It helps you to practise your handwriting.

C.It strengthens the bond between pen and paper.

D.It sharpens your comprehensive cognitive abilities.

【4】What can we infer from Katherine Moller's words?

A.It is necessary for us to turn off the virtual world.

B.Scribbling notes should be practised in our daily life.

C.Using paper and pen has the greatest impact on our daily life.

D.Writing a letter by hand can be a touching and valuable experience.

  • 24、I’ve come back to check on a baby. Just after dusk I’m in a car down a muddy road in the rain, past rows of shackled (戴镣的) elephants, their trunks swinging. I was here five hours before, when the sun was high and hot and tourists were on elephants’ backs.

Walking now, I can hardly see the path with my phone’s flashlight. When the wooden fence post stops me short, I point my light down and follow a current of rainwater across the floor until it washes up against three large, gray feet. A fourth foot twisted above the surface, tied tightly by a short chain and choked by ring of metal spikes (尖刺). When the elephant gets tired and puts her foot down, the spikes press deeper into her ankle.

Meena is four years and two months old, still a child as elephants go. Khammon Kongkhaw, her caretaker, told me earlier that Meena wears the spiked chain because she tends to kick. Kongkhaw has been responsible for Meena here at Maetaman Elephant Adventure, near Chiang Mai, in northern Thailand, since she was 11 months old. He said he keeps her on the spiked chain only during the day and takes it off at night. But it’ s night now.

I ask Jin Laoshen, the Maetaman worker, why her chain is still on. He says he doesn’t know.

Maetaman is one of many animal attractions in and around tourist-crowded Chiang Mai. Meena’s life is set to follow the same track as many of the roughly 3,800 captive (被捕获的) elephants in Thailand. When Meena is too old or sick to give rides—maybe at 55, maybe at 75, she’ll die. If she's lucky, she’ll get a few years of retirement. She'll spend most of her life on a chain.

【1】Why does the author decide to come back?

A.To check the baby elephant Meena.

    B.To feed those shackled elephants.

    C.To release those shackled elephants.

D.To help an injured worker in Maetaman.

【2】What can we conclude from the second paragraph?

A.The author is scared walking in the path.

B.Meena is treated badly and very painful

C.Meena only has three healthy legs.

D.One of Meena’s leg is badly broken.

【3】What’s the author’s attitude towards those elephants?

    A.Indifferent.

    B.Critical.

    C.Sympathetic.

    D.Negative.

【4】We can infer that the purpose of the author’s writing is______________.

A.to describe those elephants to attract tourists around the world

B.to draw people’s attention to caring about the fate of those elephants

C.to tell readers the story of a baby elephant in Chiang Mai, Thailand

D.to tell the reason why the number of elephants is decreasing
