  • 26、   Cycling has long been a sport where a competitive edge is pursued, often at any cost. Cycling shorts, however, were an area that technology had yet to enter. Little was added to them apart from, perhaps, some padding  to protect a rider.

Now, however, new cycling shorts are being equipped with sensors to help riders defeat opponents easily. A British start-up has created a pair of shorts that uses electric sensors and artificial intelligence to shape and strengthen cyclists' muscles while they are moving. It plans to also adapt this product next year for joggers and people at the gym.

The shorts, created by Devon Lewis, a PhD student at the University of Southampton, are able to send out tiny electric currents into a user's muscles to improve their cycling technique. Mr Lewis, 27, came up with the idea after studying a connection between the brain and muscles that sends chemical signals from motor neurons to muscle fibres to make the muscle contract and strengthen.

The shorts, created by Mr Lewis's start-up bypass this connection using electric cur rents to build muscle strength directly, without relying on the brain to send out signals. “We have a limited ability to control our muscles naturally,” Mr Lewis said. “You can control them more exactly, get more from your muscles and contract them more strongly, if you stimulate them directly with electricity.” Electric wires in the shorts send out currents that activate the muscle. “For those worried about getting a shock while cycling,” Mr Lewis said, “It's sort of the same thing as when you have spicy food and you get that little rush. It feels strange when you first start using it but then you adapt to it quite quickly.”

His idea has received support from Future Worlds, a start-up accelerator at Southampton University. The product is being shown next week at the technology conference CES, held digitally this year.

A.They are made of quality cotton materials.

B.They are created by world-top designers.

C.They can make running or jogging less boring.

D.They are made intelligently with electric sensors.

【3】What may be some people's worry about the shorts?

A.They may spend more than they can afford.

  • 27、With only a click of the mouse, rumors(谣言)can be forwarded between micro- blogs(微博)very quickly. As an example, recently, sensitive netizens discovered that some photos displayed on microblogs describing Beijing’s June rainstorm had actually been fabricated(伪造).

Sina.com is one of the major Internet portals (入口)in China with hundreds and thousands of users, and a majority of celebrities and famous citizens have their microblog accounts on this portal. As recently as six months ago, the website decided to establish a specialized team to prove rumors and provide accurate information for its users. Tan Chao is in charge of the team.

“Before I took the job, I usually couldn’t identify what information was real and what was fake. But during the process of identification, we discovered that a lot of information was false, including fake photos, fake news stories and rumors that had been spread through microblogs.”

It’s not just website portals which are taking on fact-checking responsibilities, but also a number of civic-minded netizens, who recently set up a Rumor Identification Federation on Sina.com’s microblog system to help netizens identify fake information online.

Dian Zizheng is the team leader of the federation. He says they’ve publicized more than 150 pieces which contradict rumors, which attracted more than 10 thousand visitors within two months.

“We live in an age of new media, so we can’t use the old methods to prove rumors. We can’t wait for the media to prove the facts with related administrative(行政) departments and then release a formal announcement. We can’t allow rumors to run wild and then deal with it, we need to fight rumors while they’re spreading. I think that this is the best way to deal with rumors nowadays.”

Some experts say this displays the advantages of the internet compared to other traditional media. The open platform allows information to be examined and clarified by netizens. But experts like Ding Wengguo, President of the Journalism and Communication College at the China University of Political Science and Law says this self-correction function of the Internet is still quite limited.

“It’s still quite different to tell which information is true in such an open environment by just reading a number of different opinions on the same issue. This is something which we need to pay attention to. If society is flooded with too much false information, and it’s allowed to spread in such a fast manner, then people will be suspicious(怀疑的) of all kinds of information including important information from authorities. It also worsens problems relating to social communications and mutual-understanding, which in turn harms society as a whole.”

Experts suggest that the government should react more quickly in the Internet age. Once a rumor begins to spread, administrative departments should make announcements as early as possible to drive away rumors before they lead to bad outcomes.

【1】Sina.com decided to found a specialized team to ________.

A.prevent the spread of rumors on the Internet

    B.advance the development of microblog

    C.limit the number of microblog

D.urge the government to react quickly to the rumors

【2】What is the best way to prove rumors on microblogs?

    A.Shutting down the website immediately.

B.Substituting the Internet for traditional media.

C.Examining and checking while they are spreading.

D.Making announcements after they are spread.

【3】The writer cited Ding Wenguo’s words in Paragraph 8 to________.

    A.draw a conclusion

    B.introduce a topic

    C.support an argument

    D.describe a scene

【4】What’s the writer’s attitude towards the rumors from microblogs according to the passage?

    A.Negative.

    B.Sympathetic.

    C.Supportive.

    D.Changeable.

  • 28、   A few weeks ago, I bought a locally-grown salad from a vending machine(自动售货机). But then I immediately realized that it was packaged in a plastic jar. "I guess I live with this jar now and forever." I thought sadly as I stared down at my new child.

The salad jar was only the latest in a long line of examples of how I am addicted to the responsibility of reusing everything, trying to never throw anything away. Water bottles have been given second lives, and berry containers are transformed into Tupperware. I recently even looked at a plastic straw in my fruit juice: Could I reuse it too...?

Yet trying to squeeze my salad jar under my kitchen counter this weekend, I finally had to admit: Being an environmentalist has turned me into a hoarder(囤积者). While keeping a certain number of jars and vegetable bags will allow me not to buy new containers, at a certain point those 30 berry containers begin to get a bit unnecessary. Who am I kidding? Then one day I came across a blog post that asks accusingly. "Are you turning your own home into a landfill(垃圾填埋场)? "

In my opinion, there is absolutely no excuse not to be a conscious consumer. The solution is painfully obvious, but hard to admit: Delaying waste is not, in fact, rejecting waste. In an over-packaged, over-consuming culture, this can feel like a burden. While I refuse to throwaway packaging, the fact remains: I already have it. The damage is done. I've been ignoring one of the most essential and difficult parts—reduce, reuse, recycle. Even if I go out of my way to reuse the waste I do have, I need to reduce what I am bringing home in the first place.

While I might not be ready to go full zero-waste, it's a goal that is admirable to work toward. Until then, my salad jar child is going to make a great overnight oats jar.

1What can we infer about the author from Paragraph 2?

    A.She is addicted to shopping.

    B.She has bad living habits.

    C.She is enthusiastic in reusing.

D.She makes good use of plastic straws.

2Why did the author become a hoarder?

A.She saved far more containers than she actually needed.

B.She was responsible for saving fine packages.

C.She enjoyed collecting a variety of jars.

D.She lived far away from the landfill.

3What does the author think is a burden?

    A.Being an environmentalist. B.Delaying waste.

    C.Being a conscious consumer. D.Rejecting waste.

4What will the author probably do in the future?

A.Store less vegetable bags. B.Avoid unnecessary consumption.

C.Reuse materials as much as possible. D.Go full zero-waste from now on.

  • 30、Liu Cixin Imagines the Future

Perhaps no one knows the power of imagination better than Chinese sci-fi writer Liu Cixin. Until four years ago, Liu worked_________as a computer engineer at a power plant in Yangquan, Shanxi province. He only wrote science fiction in his spare time. But it was during this time that Liu’s_________took flight. He did what he might never have the chance to do in_________life--wander in space, fight with aliens, and visit planets light-years away.

But even with such a_________imagination, Liu, 55, probably hadn’t expected that he would become the first Asian to win the Hugo Award, science fiction’s highest prize, in 2015. Perhaps neither did he think that former U.S. President Barack Obama would read his novel The Three-Body Problem, nor that on Nov.9 in Washington DC, he would win the 2018 Arthur C. Clarke Award for Imagination in Service to Society. It’s the first time a Chinese writer has ever won the_________.

In his acceptance speech, Liu said that he_________his imagination to Arthur C. Clarke (1917-2008), a famous UK. sci-fi author. He said that reading Clarke’s 1968 classic novel 2001: A Space Odyssey in the early 1980s had a great effect on him.

“My mind_________up like never before. I felt like a narrow stream finally embracing(融入) the sea,” Liu said. “That night, in my eyes, the starry sky was_________ different from the past. For the first time in my life, I was awed(使敬畏)by the grandeur and mystery of the _________.

But no matter how far away Liu’s imagination takes him, somehow his novels always stay __________.

And in The Wandering Earth, Liu looks ahead to the day when our __________system comes to an end and humans have to look for a new place to live. However, all his visions and solutions are __________ “hard science.” Liu’s works aren’t simply daydreams.

__________, it’s the fact that his imagination is based on reality that makes it such a powerful tool. In this too Liu is like his mentor Clarke, who, we read on the website of the Arthur C. 四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、Directions: Complete the article with the words or phrases in the box. Each word or phrase can only be used once. There is one extra that you do not need.

There was a time when British Olympic medal winners became household names because there were so few of them. But the 67 medals at this year's Games in Rio and 147 at the Paralympics meant that the GB medalists’ reception at Buckingham Palace was a crowded and happy event.

Many of this year's winners spoke of being inspired by athletes of previous generations. Inspiration fed their aspiration; and having discovered abilities they scarcely knew they had, these athletes are now inspiring others.

A few months ago, I saw inspiration of a different kind when I opened the new Cambridge base of the East Anglian Air Ambulance, where Prince William works as a helicopter pilot. It was not hard to be moved by the 1 of the highly skilled doctors, paramedics and crew, who are called out on average five times a day.

But to be inspirational you don't have to save lives or win medals. I often draw strength from meeting ordinary people doing extraordinary things: volunteers, careers, community organizers and good neighbors; unsung heroes whose quiet dedication makes them special.

They are an inspiration to those who know them, and their lives frequently embody a truth expressed by Mother Teresa, from this year Saint Teresa of Calcutta. She once said: 'Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love'.

This has been the experience of two 2 organizations, The Duke of Edinburgh's Award and The Prince's Trust, which are 60 and 40 years old this year. These started as small 3, but have grown beyond any expectations, and continue to transform young people's lives.

To mark my 90th birthday, volunteers and supporters of the six hundred charities of which I have been patron came to a lunch in The Mall. Many of these organizations are 4 in size but inspire me with the work they do. From giving friendship and support to our veterans, the elderly or the bereaved; to championing music and dance; providing animal welfare; or protecting our fields and forests, their selfless devotion and generosity of spirit is an example to us all.

When people face a challenge they sometimes talk about taking a deep breath to find courage or strength. In fact, the word 'inspire' literally means 'to breathe in'. But even with the inspiration of others, it's 5 that we sometimes think the world's problems are so big that we can do little to help. On our own, we cannot end wars or wipe out6 , but the cumulative impact of thousands of small acts of goodness can be bigger than we imagine.

At Christmas, our attention is drawn to the birth of a baby some two thousand years ago. It was the humblest of beginnings, and his parents, Joseph and Mary, did not think they were important.

Jesus Christ lived obscurely for most of his life, and never travelled far. He was maligned and 7 by many, though he had done no wrong. And yet, billions of people now follow his teaching and find in him the guiding light for their lives. I am one of them because Christ's example helps me see the value of doing small things with great love, whoever does them and whatever they themselves believe.

The message of Christmas reminds us that inspiration is a gift to be given as well as received, and that love begins small but always grows.

I wish you all a very happy Christmas.
