二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Amazon’s Alexa will be able to revive the voices of deceased relatives, allowing users to feel as if they are speaking to lost ones beyond the grave.

In a video shown on stage, Amazon demonstrated how, instead of Alexa’s signature voice reading a story toa young boy, it was his grandmother’s voice.

Rohit Prasad, an Amazon senior vice president, said the updated system will be able to collect enough voice data from less than a minute of audio to make personalization like this possible, rather than having someone spend hours in a recording studio like how it’s done in the past.

The concept starts from Amazon looking at new ways to add more “human features” to artificial intelligence, especially “in these times of the ongoing pandemic, when so many of us have lost someone we love,” Prasad said. “While AI can’t rid that pain of loss, it can definitely make their memories last. “

Amazon has long used AI recreations of people’s voices to voice Alexa. But they have also increasingly improved over the past few years, particularly with the use of AI and deepfake technology.

However, Amazon’s attempt at personalized Alexa voices may struggle most with the weird valley effect-recreating a voice that is so similar to a loved one’s but isn’t quite right, which leads to rejection by real humans. “For some, they will view this as creepy or outright terrible, but for others it could be viewed in a more profound way, perhaps for the first time and in a way that isn’t a strict recording from the past.” said Michael Inouye of ABI Research. He believes, however, the varying reactions to announcements like this speak to how society will have to adjust to the promise of innovations and their eventual reality in the years ahead.

The technology is also likely to lead to fears that it could be used to impersonate living people, which could be used to bypass security systems. In 2019, a manager at a British energy company lost almost£200, 000 after criminals used AI to fake his boss’s voice, directing him to transfer the company’s funds to a foreign bank account.

【1】What is the feature of the updated system of Amazon’s Alexa?

A.It will use AI recreations of people’s voices.

B.It will be highly efficient in collecting voice data.

C.It will free the grandmother from reading a story.

D.It will make a breakthrough in deepfake technology.

【2】Why does Amazon update Alexa’s voice?

    A.To make it more human-like.

B.To cure people’s pain of loss.

C.To remind people of lost good memories.

    D.To demonstrate Amazon’s powerful technology.

【3】What does the underlined word “impersonate” in the last paragraph mean?

    A.Interact with.

    B.Prove to be.

    C.Have command of.

    D.Pretend to be.

【4】What’s the author’s attitude towards Alexa’s personalized voices?

    A.Critical.

    B.Objective.

    C.Supportive.

    D.Skeptical.

  • 27、Processed foods like chips, sodas and frozen pizzas are full of salt, sugar, and fat. Now, scientists are trying to understand if there is something else about such foods that may be bad for humans.

The researchers created a system that places foods into four groups. The system says highly processed foods are made mostly of industrialized materials and additives (添加剂). Sodas, packaged cookies, instant noodles and chicken nuggets (鸡肉块) are some examples of highly processed foods. But also included are products that can seem healthy, such as morning cereals, energy bars and some kinds of yogurt.

Researchers conducted a four-week study involving 20 people. They found that people ate about 500 more calories a day when fed mostly processed foods. That is compared to when the same people were given less processed foods. The researchers permitted the 20 participants to cat as much or as little as they wanted. They were taken to a medical center so their health and behavior could be observed. In another study, researchers in France found people who ate more processed foods were more likely to have heart disease. A similar study in Spain linked eating more processed foods to a higher risk of death in general.

The scientists also found that people ate processed foods more quickly. Kevin Hall is one of the researchers who led the study. He said that processed foods were usually softer and easier to chew and swallow. Hall noted the source of nutrients might make a difference. For example, fiber from fruit and vegetables may be better for making people feel full than fiber added to packaged foods such as energy bars and yogurt.

Avoiding processed foods can be hard, especially for people with limited time and money. Processed foods can also take many forms. In addition, companies continually re-engineer products to make them seem healthier. The newest studies may provide more reasons to avoid processed foods. But, they also call attention to the difficulty of coming up with ways to do that.

【1】What kind of food do energy bars belong to?

    A.Fairly health-friendly foods.

    B.Especially beneficial foods.

    C.Relatively high-cost foods.

    D.Highly processed foods.

【2】What can we know about eating more processed foods in Paragraph 3?

A.It does harm to people potentially.

B.It can often result in death.

C.It makes people get less calories.

D.It makes little difference to people’s health.

【3】What is more likely to make people feel full?

    A.Fiber added to packaged foods.

    B.Fiber from fruit and vegetables.

C.Highly processed foods like instant noodles.

D.Foods made mostly of industrial materials and additives.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

    A.Different Kinds of Processed Foods

    B.Recent Studies on Processed Foods

    C.How Bad Processed Foods Are

D.Advantages and Disadvantages of Processed Foods

  • 28、Jason Barnes is a young musician who lives in Georgia. Eight years ago, Jason lost his right arm just below his elbow in an accident. Jason got a prosthetic (假体的) arm. But this arm could only do a few things. Jason still wanted to play music. So he went to see Gil Weinberg, who makes musical robots. To play the piano, Jason needed five fingers that could move just the way he wanted. This was a big challenge.

Living arms move when muscles respond to commands from the brain. When you think “open fingers”, your brain sends electrical signals along nerves. Some prosthetic arms use sensors (传感器) to try to read these nerve signals. But they don’t work very well. Nerves are tiny, and their signals are faint. Sensors might be able to tell that you want to move a finger. But they aren’t very good at telling which finger you want to move.

Jason doesn’t have his hand anymore, but he still has the arm muscles that move his fingers. When Jason thinks about moving his fingers, those muscles still move. To read the muscles inside Jason’s arm, the team used ultrasound (超声波). The roboticists taught a computer to read the ultrasound sensor as Jason thought about moving his fingers. The computer learned which muscles moved when Jason wanted his fingers to move in a certain way. Thinking about moving his fingers makes the muscles in his upper arm move. The computer sees the moving muscles and tells the motors in Jason’s robotic fingers to move the right way.

The team hopes the “Skywalker hand”, their prosthesis, will someday work as well as a real hand. The sensors, motors, and computers inside the hand are not complex. But they need to get smaller and cheaper before lots of these hands can be made. Weinberg and his team are working on this right now. Soon, they hope that anyone who loses a hand will be able to get a new robotic one with five fingers that they can move just by thinking.

    【1】Why did Jason visit Weinberg?

    A.To save his own life.

    B.To learn to play music.

    C.To study musical robots.

    D.To replace his prosthetic arm.

【2】What does the underlined word “faint” in paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Specific.

    B.Weak.

    C.Stable.

    D.Predictable.

【3】What makes the invention of the robotic hand possible?

A.Moving muscles are simpler to spot than nerves.

B.Nerve searching techniques have developed fast.

C.Ultrasound sensors vary from finger to finger.

D.Motors are much quicker to operate.

【4】What do Weinberg and his team expect of the Skywalker hand?

    A.It’ll be easy to make.

    B.It’ll be customer-friendly.

C.It’ll be better than real hands.

    D.It’ll be controlled by computers.

  • 29、In one of the world’s most forbidding environments, Polar bears spend their summers roaming (漫步) the Arctic on large pieces of floating ice. They drift(漂移) for hundreds of miles, finding mates, hunting for seals, and fatting themselves up for the winter. Without the floating ice, the world’s largest bears could not survive. Yet at this moment, the polar bears’ Arctic habitat (栖息地) is melting away under it because of global warming.

Over the past three decades, more than a million square miles of floating ice has disappeared. Scientists predict that, if the current rate of global warming continues, most, if not all, of the bears’ floating ice will be gone by 2100. As a result, the world’s polar bears could face global dying out by the end of this century.

Already, the ice on the southern edge of the polar bears’ habitat is melting about three weeks earlier than in the past. The loss of those key weeks leaves the bears less time to hunt, eat and store up fat. Once the ice melts, the bears must fast for up to eight months on land until the floating ice returns. As a result of early melting, there has been a 14 percent decline in the Hudson Bay polar bear population over the past ten years—a fall clearly caused by global warming.

Besides, a growing number of polar bears may be drowning (溺水) as they are forced to swim more often, and for longer distances, looking for ice sheets(冰原). According to a report by the US Minerals Management Service, researchers observed four dead polar bears floating 60 miles off Alaska in September of 2006 and said it was likely that many other bears swimming far off shore also drowned. Scientists have concluded that the worldwide population of about 20,000 polar bears is likely to become smaller by more than 30 percent in the next 35 to 50 years alone.

1】【1What do polar bears usually do in summer?

    A. Look for relatives.

    B. Hunt for food.

    C. Store crops up.

    D. Make friends with seals.

2】【2What disaster will happen to polar bears by the end of this century according to the text?

    A. Global drowning.

    B. Global dying out.

    C. Global hunger.

    D. Global roaming.

3】【3What can be inferred from the underlined part in Paragraph 3?

    A. The bears will have to stay hungry longer.

    B. The bears will have to roam faster.

    C. The bears will have to stay quieter on land.

    D. The bears will have to face a faster fall of its population.

4】【4Why do polar bears have to swim more often and farther?

    A. To search for food.

    B. To build up bodies to survive.

    C. To find places to land on.

    D. To escape being hunted.
