二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   In 1784, five years before he became president of the United States, George Washington, 52, was nearly toothless. So he hired a dentist to transplant nine teeth into his jaw – having taken them from the mouths of his slaves.

That’s a far different image from the cherry-tree-chopping George most people remember from their history books. But recently, many historians have begun to focus on the roles slavery played in the lives of the founding generation. They have been spurred in part by DNA evidence made available in 1998, which almost certainly proved Thomas Jefferson had fathered at least one child with his slave Sally Hemings. And only over the past 30 years have scholars examined history from the bottom up. Works of several historians reveal (揭示)the moral compromises (妥协)made by the nation’s early leaders and the fragile nature of the country’s infancy. More significantly, they argue that many of the Founding Fathers knew slavery was wrong – and yet most did little to fight it.

More than anything, the historians say, the founders were hampered (妨碍)by the culture of their time. While Washington and Jefferson privately expressed hatred (仇恨)for slavery, they also understood that it was part of the political and economic foundation of the country they helped to create.

For one thing, the South could not afford to part with its slaves. Owning slaves was “like having a large bank account,” says Wiencek, author of An Imperfect God: George Washington, His Slaves, and the Creation of America. The southern states would not have signed the Constitution (宪法)without protections for the “peculiar institution,” including a clause that counted a slave as three fifths of a man for purposes of congressional representation.

And the statesmen’s political lives depended on slavery. The three-fifths formula handed Jefferson his narrow victory in the presidential election of 1800 by inflating (膨胀)the votes of the southern states in the Electoral College. Once in office, Jefferson extended slavery with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803; the new land was carved into 13 states, including three slave states.

Still, Jefferson freed Hemings’s children – though not Hemings herself or his approximately 150 other slaves. Washington, who had begun to believe that all men were created equal after observing the bravery of the black soldiers during the Revolutionary War, overcame the strong opposition of his relatives to grant his slaves their freedom in his will. Only a decade earlier, such an act would have required legislative approval in Virginia.

1George Washington’s dental surgery is mentioned to ___________.

A.show the primitive medical practice in the past.

B.demonstrate the cruelty of slavery in his days.

C.stress the role of slaves in the U.S. history.

D.reveal some unknown aspect of his life.

2What can we learn about Thomas Jefferson?

A.His political view changed his attitude towards slavery.

B.His status as a father made him free the child slaves.

C.His attitude towards slavery was complex.

D.His affair with a slave stained his prestige.

3Which of the following is true according to the text?

A.Some Founding Fathers benefit politically from slavery.

B.Slaves in the old days did not have the right to vote.

C.Slave owners usually had large savings accounts.

D.Slavery was regarded as a peculiar institution.

  • 28、Following detailed discussions with all parties concerned, the OCA Executive Board announced that it has decided to put off the 19th Asian Games, which was scheduled to be held in Hangzhou from 10 to 25, September 2022. There are 40 sports including swimming, archery, athletics, badminton, baseball and softball, basketball, boxing, etc. During the competition days, athletes will compete for 482 gold medals. The first event on the schedule is men’s football.

The mascots (吉祥物) of the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022 are a group of robots. The three animated characters Congcong, Lianlian and Chenchen have become increasingly popular. They can be seen everywhere in Hangzhou. The mascots’ designs were inspired by Hangzhou’s three World Heritage sites, namely the Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu Culture, the West Lake, and the Grand Canal.

The Hangzhou Asian Games Organizing Committee has worked with Alipay to encourage the public to donate (捐献) one kilogram of “energy” they collected in a game known as “Ant Forest”. Through “Ant Forest” people exchange their actual daily footsteps for virtual energy, which can be used to plant real trees in China.

In order to promote “Zero-waste Asian Games”, Hangzhou is building zero-waste hotels for the Asian Cames. For example, Hangzhou International Expo Centre Hotel has built a set of drinkable water system to replace the bottled water supply in guest rooms. Based on the standard of two bottles of water for each room, the drinkable water system can save more than 500 bottles of mineral water per day and thus reduce a great number of plastic bottles in a year.

    B.By donating bottled water.

C.By limiting the use of water.

D.By reducing the use of plastic.

  • 29、Let the kids sleep, said Scott Maxwell in the Orlando Sentinel. In the US, nearly 9 out of 10 high schools begin classes before 8:30 a.m., and 10 percent before 7:30, and buses pick up kids more than an hour before dawn, forcing tired teens to get out of bed without enough sleep.

This early-bird schedule flies in the face of findings that 87 percent of America’s high school students are short of sleep, and that high schools and middle schools should start no earlier than 8:30 a.m. This is “hardly a trivial matter”, because research shows that teens who don’t get enough sleep are more likely to be overweight and low in spirits and do poorly in school.

There is no arguing the benefits of enough sleep, said the Los Angeles Times. However, what is “less clear” is that forcing high schools and middle schools to start later is the path to achieving the benefits. One study found that later start times might mean just an additional “15 minutes per night” of sleep. Another study found that teens got “significantly more sleep the first year of a schedule change” but then started going to bed later by the second. And since the buses that transport older kids also carry primary school students in most areas, adjusting high school start times would require adjusting the start time of younger kids.

Since the AAP’s 2014 report, about every believable medical science organization has come out in support of later start times. The Brookings Institution found that later school start times were followed by “a significant increase” in test scores. Some New Jersey schools moved all start times to 8:30 and found “reduced lateness, and teachers reported students were more ready to learn.” The proof is in, and it leads to only one decision: “Start school later.”

【1】What does the underlined expression “a trivial matter” refer to in Paragraph 2?

    A.Something impossible

    B.Something unimportant

    C.Something necessary

    D.Something valuable

【2】What can we learn from the third paragraph?

A.The benefits of enough sleep is no so clear.

B.Primary schools start earlier than high schools.

C.Teens need less sleep when they are one year older.

D.15 minutes’ more sleep per night is not enough for teens.

【3】What improvement can be seen if students get enough sleep?

    A.Reduce more weight

    B.Go to school much earlier

C.Get better marks in the tests

D.Be not in low spirits anymore

【4】What suggestion may the author give to the government?

    A.Start school later

    B.Get enough sleep

    C.Pick up kids earlier

    D.Move school start times
