二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、American English and British English

Many students want to know about the differences between American English and British English. How did these differences come about? There is no quick answer to this question.

At first the language in Britain and America was the same. In 1776 America became an independent (独立的) country. After that, the language slowly began to change. For a long time the language in America stayed the same, while the language in England changed. For example, 300 years ago the English talked about “fall” Today, most British people talk about “autumn”, but Americans still talk about “fall”. In the same way Americans still use the expression “I guess” ( meaning “I think”), just as the British did 300 years ago. At the same time, British English and American English started borrowing words from other languages, ending up with different words. For example, the British took “typhoon” from Chinese, while the Americans took “tornado” from Spanish.

In 1828 Noah Webster published the first American dictionary. He wanted to make American English different from British English, so he changed the spelling of many words. That’s why the words colour, centre and traveller are spelt color, center, and traveler in American English. Except for these differences in spelling, written English is more or less the same in both British and American English.

The differences are greater in the spoken language. For example, American say dance [dæns], and in southern England they say [da:ns]. In America they pronounce not [nat]; in southern England they say [nɔt]. However, most of the time people from the two countries do not have any difficulty in understanding each other.

【1】When did the language in Britain and American slowly begin to change?

    A.After 1828.

    B.300 years ago.

C.After Britain stopped ruling the USA.

D.300 years after America became independent.

【2】British English is different from American English because ________.

A.Britain and America published different dictionaries

B.American English changed but British English stayed the same

C.British decided to change the spelling of many American words

D.the Americans and British took different words from other countries

【3】What is the passage mainly about?

A.Why English has been a popular language.

B.How American and British English have changed.

C.How people in two countries understand each other.

D.Why Britain and America are two similar countries.

  • 28、Collingwood Children’s Farm is an inner-city oasis (绿洲). For 40 years, this beautiful farm with pigs, chickens and vegetable gardens has provided a taste of the countryside in Melbourne.

The four-hectare farm is no throwback to the past. It is providing a glimpse of our future. In a time when a changing climate and population growth are causing concerns about food security, the farm is becoming a model for how we might change our approach to inner-city food production. The farm’s primary purpose has always been to support those in the community experiencing disadvantage. However, the not-for-profit has also spent the past year becoming a model of best-practice inner-city agriculture.

Since mid-2020, an unused field has slowly been transformed into a bio-intensive vegetable garden. On top of that, new horticulturalists (园艺专家) have been employed to help build vegetable gardens that will help the soil. Horticulturist Rachel Freeman is head of the farm’s vegetable gardens. Freeman says she is a big believer in the importance of “linking people to food systems and showing people what you can do”. When it comes to showing how to educate and engage the community, this farm is hard to beat. In 2019, Collingwood Children’s Farm had an average of 15,000 visitors each month. In April 2020, 17,000 people came through. At that time, Ash and Shacklock were harvesting fast-growing turnip they had sown (播种) between cabbages to make the most of the growing space.

Freeman says the land had a long history of food growing before it became the children’s farm in 1979. The Wurundjeri people cultivated food here for thousands of years before a group of nuns (修女) began growing vegetables on the site in the 1860s. Freeman says that the farm has been “in this amazing state of” change with many new projects under way. However, they are happening at a snail’s pace due to the farm’s focus on making volunteers a part of them, especially people with disadvantage. “We do the work slowly with volunteers,” Freeman says. “This is an active space not a botanical one.”

【1】What is the main purpose of the farm?

A.To deal with global climate change.

    B.To set a model for inner-city agriculture.

C.To produce safe food for local people.

D.To support poor people in the community.

    【2】What belief does Freeman hold?

A.Education is the key to great success.

B.Farms should be built on food system.

C.People should actively participate in farming.

D.People should attach importance to farming.

【3】Why did they sow turnips between cabbages on the farm?

    A.To satisfy children’s curiosity.

    B.To help cabbages grow better.

C.To attract more visitors to join.

D.To use the growing space fully.

【4】What can we learn from these new projects?

A.They are aimed at involving volunteers.

B.They have put volunteers at a disadvantage.

C.They are gaining popularity among children.

D.They have got into some financial difficulties.

  • 29、Your Next Nurse Could Be a Robot

Dr. De Momi, of the Politecnico di Milano (Italy), led an international team that trained a robot to imitate natural human actions. 【1】 Over time this should lead to improvements in safety during surgeries because unlike their human counterparts robots do not tire and can complete an endless series of precise movements. The goal is not to remove human skill from the operating room, but to complement it with a robot’s particular skills and benefits.

“As a roboticist, I am convinced that robotic (co)workers and collaborators will definitely change the work market, but they won’t steal job opportunities. 【2】” De Momi explains.

To conduct their experiment De Momi’s team photographed a human being conducting numerous reaching motions, in a way similar to handing instruments to a surgeon. These camera captures were input into the neural network of the robotic arm, which is crucial to controlling movements. Next a human operator guided the robotic arm in imitating the reaching motions that the human subject had initially performed. Although there was not a perfect overlap between the robotic and human actions, they were broadly similar.

【3】 These observers determined whether the actions of the robotic arms were “biologically inspired,” which would indicate that their neural networks had effectively learned to imitate human behavior. About 70% of the time this is exactly what the human observers concluded.

These results are promising, although further research is necessary to confirm or refine De Momi’s conclusions. If robotic arms can indeed imitate human behavior, it would be necessary to build conditions in which humans and robots can cooperate effectively in high stress environments like operating rooms. 【4】 De Momi’s work is part of the growing field of healthcare robotics, which has the potential to change the way we receive health care sooner rather than later.

A.This future may not be as far away as we think.

B.Robots can’t successfully imitate doctors’ motions in the operating room.

C.Finally, several humans observed as the robotic arm made numerous motions.

D.The nursing assistant for your next trip to the hospital will still be a robot instead of human beings.

E.They will just allow us to decrease workload and achieve better performances in several tasks.

F.His work indicates that humans and robots can effectively cooperate during high-risk events such as surgeries.

五、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 32、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was a cold night, and there was ice in Dad’s beard (胡须) when he came back in. “Come on, Elizabeth,” he said. “Put on your coat. It’s cold out.”

I was sad. Not only wasn’t I getting the dress I wanted because there was not enough money; now Dad was dragging (硬拽) me out into the cold.

Outside, I became even sadder. There in front of the woodshed (柴棚), was our truck.

“Dad, what are we doing?” I asked.

“We need to load (装载) wood onto the truck,” Dad said.

I unwillingly started loading wood- the wood we’d spent all summer cutting into blocks.

“Have you been by Mrs. Clark’s lately?” he asked.

Mrs. Clark lived about two miles down the road from us. Her husband had passed away the year before, leaving her with three children to raise on her own.

    “Yeah,” I said. “Why?”

“I rode by just today,” Dad said. “Little Jake was out digging around in the woodpile, trying to find a few chips. They’re out of wood, Elizabeth.”

That was all he said, and we loaded the truck high with wood. Dad then went to the smokehouse and took down some meat, telling me to go load it. He returned to the truck carrying a bag of flour (面粉) over his right shoulder and a smaller bag of something in his left hand.

“What’s in the little bag?” I asked.

“Shoes. They’re out of shoes. I got the children a little candy too.”

Then Dad explained that he and Mom had saved enough money to buy me a dress. Yesterday, when he saw little Jake, Dad knew what he had to do. “I spent that money on some shoes and a little candy for those children. I hope you understand,” he said.

We rode the two miles to the Clarks’ place in silence. I tried to think about what Dad was doing. We did have a big woodpile, meat and flour, so we could spare that, but I knew we didn’t have any money. Mrs. Clark had closer neighbors than us. Why was it our business?

    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右。

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
