27、The three men sat in the truck, unaware of the hot Nevada sun. Their attention was focused on a fourth man, middle-aged, tall slender, and rather well dressed for the desert-like land of the Carson River Valley. He walked purposefully over the sandy soil, systematically covering the area of a gentle rise. In his outstretched hands was a Y-shaped tree branch, “I feel silly about this,” one of the men in the truck said. “What he’s doing is contrary to all my beliefs.”
“Just you wait,” one of the other two told him. “then you won’t feel so silly any more.”
At length, the man with the branch stopped his walking. The stick he carried by the two ends of the Y no longer pointed toward the sky. Instead, it was pointing to the ground with a definite swinging motion.
“That’s it,” one of the men in the truck called. He jumped over the side and ran toward the man with the stick. Within minutes, a stake (桩) had been driven into the ground at the point where the forked stick was pointing. Early the next morning, a drilling rig (钻机) lowered its bit into the earth at the same point and mechanical digging began. Less than twenty feet down, the drill stuck something the man who said he felt silly had been seeking for months: water.
It had been an uncommonly dry summer, even for that part of Nevada. One well had gone dry, and livestock were thirsty. Previous attempts at well drilling had failed. Government geologists and soil engineers had gone over the area with maps, testing equipment, and sounding device. The best they could accomplish for the farmer was a gloomy series of dry holes. All the farmer had to show for his faith in men of science was a considerable drilling bill and a thirsty herd.
He had felt silly because he had been pushed by desperation into listening to some of his neighbors who suggested he try a water witch: the man with the forked stick.
After the well was completed and plenty water flowed forth, the farmer smiled nervously as he paid the water witch his twenty-five dollar fee. “It seems so crazy to be doing this,” he said. Perhaps part of the craziness came because the farmer was a university graduate, a teacher of science at a nearby high school. However, even odder was the water witch’s request for anonymity (匿名),“ I don’t mind you telling people you had searched for water through the use of a divining rod (占卜杖),” the water witch had said, “but I’ll be grateful to you if you don’t mention my name in any way that gets into print. I don’t think my boss would like it.”
【1】The farmer occasionally expressed the feeling that _______.
A.geologists would be able to do a better job
B.he was foolish to hire a witch to find water
C.he firmly believed in water witching
D.the water witch’s fee was too high

D.made him waste a lot of money
【3】Before leaving, the water witch asked the farmer _______.
A.not to reveal his name
B.to pay more for his service

28、"It is difficult to change a bad first impression, but not impossible. Don't try to force new relationships. Let relationships develop naturally, and don't do things just to make people like you. Be yourself," Huhman advises. If you watched in the 1980 s, you probably remember the Head & Shoulders advertisement warning, "You never get a second chance to make a first impression."
Now new research suggests that this isn't totally true, though the news isn't good for anyone who is trying to improve perceptions (看法).
For a paper called "The Tipping (转变) Point of Moral Change: When Do Good and Bad Acts Make Good and Bad Actors?" published in Social Cognition, Nadav Klein and Ed O'Brien, psychological scientists at the University of Chicago ran several experiments designed to discover how quickly people are willing to change impressions.
In one online study of 201 participants (参与者), an office worker known as "Barbara" started off neutrally (无明显特征地), but occasionally took a series of positive or negative actions. Sometimes she held doors for people. Other times she would cut in line. Participants answered how long such behavior had to go on for their perception of Barbara to tip in various directions.
The result? Barbara had to do nice things for more weeks to become regarded as a good person than the number of weeks she had to do bad things to become bad. Another online experiment including 200 female participants also found that people were quick to judge when Barbara was doing wrong and much slower to believe she'd changed for the better. "People only need to take just a few bad actions to appear greatly changed for the worse, but need to take many good actions to appear greatly changed for the better," the authors write.
If you've made a good first impression on a group of people, don't get too comfortable. Do something bad, and they'll quickly change their impression for the worse. But if you made a bad first impression, then the Head & Shoulders advertisement is onto something because, as Heather Huhman, president of Come Recommended, puts it, "People are always quick to judge, and we like our opinions-we don't like to change our minds."
【1】What did the Head & Shoulders advertisement show?
A.First impressions are lasting long.
B.First impressions are not powerful .
C.First impressions can work wonders.
D.First impressions are the most natural.
【2】What are the findings of the studies?
A.People are quick to judge.
B.It takes less time to become good.
C.People always focus on bad actions.
D.It's harder to change bad impressions.
【3】What's Huhman's advice?
A.To be the real you.
B.To make people like you.
C.To develop friendship.
D.To take no notice of people's judgement.
29、Plants grow well with enough sunshine and water. However, put in unfortunate conditions, they have no choice but to die. But what if plants could relocate to better places?
It was this question that Sun Tianqi, founder of a Chinese robotics firm Vincross, asked himself while watching a dead sunflower. “I thought if it could have taken a 30 - foot walk out of the shadow to where the other sunflowers were, it would have lived healthily,” he said.
He decided then to build a robot that would let plants do just that. The researchers took one of his company’s traditional HEXA robot models and built a “flowerpot,” which replaced HEXA’s shell.
HEXA is a six - legged robot that comes complete with all the necessary sensors. The impressive plant robot can chase (追逐) the sun, hide for shelter, and perform a funny dance to indicate it is thirsty.
Tianqi concluded, “Plants are passive. No matter if they are being cut, bitten, burned or pulled from the earth, or when they lack sunshine, water, or are too hot or cold, hey will hold still and take whatever is happening to them. They have the fewest degrees of freedom among all the creature in nature. This is simply the setting that nature gives to plants. I hope that this project can bring some inspiration to the relationship between technology and bad natural settings.”
【1】What does Tianqi say about the plants?
A.Some plants cannot survive in bad surroudings.
B.Some plants chase the sun to acquire shelter.
C.Plants have a life cycle like humans.
D.Plants are important to the environment.
【2】What inspired Tianqi to build a plant robot?
A.His environmental awareness.
B.His love for sunflowers.
C.A broken flowerpot.
D.A dead flower.
【3】What do we know about the plant robot?
A.It is solar - powered.
B.It carries plants to move.
C.It feeds nutrients to plants.
D.It offers growers useful tips.
【4】What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?
A.His robot needs much improvement.
B.Technology can set human beings free.
C.His robot has many useful future applications.
D.Technology can remove natural disadvantages.
