二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、When I first set foot on Mexican soil, I spoke Spanish well. So when I asked a local ice-cream seller for an ice-cream, and he said “ahorita,” which directly translates to “right now,” I took him at his word, believing that its arrival was immediate.

I sat near his shop and waited. Half an hour passed and still no ice-cream arrived, so I asked again about it. “Ahorita,” he told me again. His face was a mix of confusion and maybe even embarrassment.

I was torn. Waiting longer wasn’t pleasant, but I felt it was impolite to walk away, especially if the ice-cream was now being delivered just for me. But finally, after waiting too long, I made a rush for the nearest bus to take me home. As I left, I signalled at my wrist and shrugged to the ice-cream seller. Obviously, I couldn’t wait any longer and it really wasn’t my fault. His face was, once again, one of total confusion.

This experience faded from my memory until years later when I came back to live in Mexico. I discovered that understanding “ahorita” took not a fluency in the language, but rather a fluency in the culture. When someone from Mexico says “ahorita,” it should almost never be taken literally (照字面地); its meaning changes greatly with context. As a linguist told me, “Ahorita could mean tomorrow, in an hour, within five years or never.” It is even used as a polite way of saying “no, thanks” when refusing an offer.

Since I moved to Mexico, my attitude towards time has changed dramatically. I don’t worry so much about being late; I am generally still on time for appointments, but when I’m not, I don’t panic. Ironically, it would seem that “Ahorita Time” has actually allowed me to live far more in the “right now” than I ever did before.

【1】Why did the author believe that his ice-cream’s arrival was immediate?

A.Because the seller told him that it would be served soon.

B.Because he was confident of the direct translation of “ahorita”.

C.Because the ice-cream shop was not crowded.

D.Because he asked about it again and the seller answered the same.

【2】What does the underlined word “torn” mean in the third paragraph?

    A.tired.

    B.too hungry to move.

    C.unable to decide.

    D.thirsty.

【3】What should be paid attention to when understanding “ahorita”?

    A.A fluency in the culture.

    B.A fluency in the language.

    C.Translating it literally.

    D.Its unchangeable meaning.

【4】Which is the best title of the passage?

A.The importance of understanding foreign cultures

    B.The different meanings of “ahorita”

    C.How interesting Spanish is

D.The confusing way Mexicans tell time

  • 27、Companion(同伴)robots are playing an ever-increasing role in helping busy people look after the elderly and children. With an aging population and an increasing labor shortage, the demand for companion robots for elder care and children’s companions is on the rise.

Xiaoyuzaijia is an intelligent companion robot produced by Zaijia.com, a Beijing-based startup engaged in internet hardware and intelligent home appliances businesses.

If the elderly people are ill at home, the robot can bring medicine and water. The robot will open the door when the guest comes. It can even tell a story, sing a song and play chess.

The number of elderly people aged 60 and above reached more than 222 million in 2015, accounting for 16.2 percent of the total population, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. It is estimated that the number will reach 243 million in 2020.

Song Chenfeng, founder and CEO of Zaijia, said: "The robot is equipped with a monitoring camera and other hardware for facial and voice recognition.” Family members could also connect their smart phones with the robot. “When the elderly fall or the children cry at home, the robot will send messages to inform other family members," he said. “The companion robot should be an important 'blue sea' in the intelligent household robot market. Xiaoyuzaijia aims at white-collar people who are busy with their work and spend less time accompanying their family members. It builds a bridge among family members and satisfies the emotional communications needs of modern people,” said Song.

Yuan Wenhui, chairman of Zaijia, said the company will offer personalized service in the family healthcare and children's education sectors, based on big data algorithms, aiming to be an indispensable intelligent family housekeeper in the future.

  • 29、Having moved to a new city, I was looking for things to do in my spare time. I intended to meet new people, for I am a social person. Hearing that the Business Confucius Institute (BCI) was offering Chinese evening classes on the university campus, I was determined to sign up for Level 1 class.

This initial (最初的)decision was made on a whim. I had no grand career goals or plans to travel to China in the near future. Learning a new language was the fact that it was not something I had done before. My mother is from Spain and I was raised with two languages, but there is a huge difference between acquiring a language in childhood and learning one in adulthood. I expected to find out how I would get along with Chinese.

In each class my Chinese teacher would teach us what seemed like thousands of new words and expressions, and then get us to act them out in role plays reproducing basic Chinese introductions and conversations. After each lesson I felt as though my brain had been placed in a deep oil pot for a long time. But then, I began to realize that the more my brain ached right after class, the more information I had taken in. I found that Chinese words and expressions we had covered would rush unexpectedly into my head at any moment, such as when I was in the shower or driving to work. I have now completed the Business Confucius Level 3 class and am able to hold basic conversations with Chinese people on a variety of topics.

This experience helped me a lot. Recently I landed a new job at the University of Leeds’ School of Law, providing job opportunities for Chinese students. Learning Chinese will help me in my career, further fuelling my motivation to continue my studies.

【1】What was the writer’s purpose of signing up for the Chinese class?

    A.To make new friends.

    B.To show off his ability.

C.To adapt to the city life.

    Erika and the Necklace

Erika and her little sister Beth sneaked into their mommy’s room. “I’m just going to try on some jewelry,” said Erika. She took a necklace and tried to put it on her neck. “Oh, no,” said Beth. “Mommy doesn’t like us playing with her stuff.” “Okay, you be the lookout,” instructed Erika. “Stand by the door and let me know if Mommy comes up the stairs.”

Before Beth got to the door, Bouncer, the family’s Bernedoodle dog, bounded into the room and almost knocked Erika down. The necklace went flying. It had barely hit the floor when Bouncer bit it and raced off.

“Bouncer! Bouncer!” yelled Erika. “Beth, help me get the necklace back.” The girls were hot on Bouncer’s tail. “Stop!” they yelled. Bouncer dashed down the stairs and into the living room. He stopped just long enough for the girls to get close to him. Then of he went. “Stop!” yelled Erika. “Beth, you go the other way. We’ll corner him in the dining room.”

Erika met Beth in the dining room. Sure enough, Bouncer was there waiting for them. He was down low on his front legs with his tail in the air, ready to play. “Grab him!” screamed Erika.

Just as Beth was about to grab him, Bouncer took off. He whizzed (嗖地移动) by Beth and Erika. “Stop, you troublemaker!” yelled Erika as she raced after him. The girls were getting close again, but Bouncer zoomed down the basement stairs. The girls raced after him. “I don’t see him,” said Beth. Erika scratched her head. “He’s got to be down here. He’s hiding.”

Just then Mom called to the girls. “Erika, what’s all the noise? What’s wrong? I heard you from the yard.” “Uh, oh,” whispered Erika. “Uh.. nothing’s wrong,” she shouted.

Beth dashed up the stairs. Erika heard her telling Mom everything. “That blabber mouth (多嘴的人),” said Erika under her breath.
