二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、A spacecraft in low-Earth route singing a duet with trees down on Earth sounds like a scene out of a strange science fiction film. But if a group of NASA scientists and artists have their way, it'll be a real-life teamwork lasting two centuries.

The teamwork of trees and machine, a public science project called The Tree of Life, "connects Earth and outer space through a song, which is sent via radio waves between a spacecraft and an unlikely technological part: a set of live trees" reads a description of the project from the Space Song Foundation. "As the light, water and temperature at the tree change, so does the actual sound of the song," says Julia Christensen, president of the Space Song Foundation.

"In the short term, we hear changes in the song as day turns to night, as clouds pass over the tree, as seasons change, etc.," adds Christensen, chair of the studio art program at Oberlin College. "But over the very long term — decades or centuries — we will hear major global shifts in climate and other changes on our planet."

Artists involved with the Space Song Foundation could have chosen any object for their experimental communication system. So why trees? Because they continue to exist for many decades and can tell a larger story about life on our planet.

As planned, the first two trees will start "singing" in New York and Los Angeles, with speakers broadcasting the duet in real time. Funds raised will go toward the equipment needed to wire up the two trees. “By collecting data on their environment, trees, can help tell the bigger story about what's going on on our planet,” said Christensen.

【1】What may lead to immediate changes of the song in The Tree of Life?

    A.The light on the spacecraft.

    B.Water shortage on the earth.

    C.Days turning to night.

    D.Artists performing the song.

【2】What is the point of doing the project The Tree of Life?

    A.Producing a perfect attractive music.

B.Exploring new ways to plant more trees.

C.Observing the major changes on the earth.

D.Working out a better solution to the balance of man and nature.

【3】Why did artists choose trees as part of the project system?

A.Because trees can survive for many years time.

B.Because trees are our best and loyal friends.

C.Because tress are good at singing songs.

D.Because tress have long stories behind their names

【4】What dose Christensen think of the project?

    A.Worthwhile.

    B.Challenging.

    C.Consuming-time.

    D.Environmental-friendly.

You walk around the supermarket, choose the things you want, put them into a special basket prepared by the store and pay for them all together at the door. • 28、   Shortly before Christmas last year, one of Brazilian pianists Joao Carlos Martins invited his friends to a bar near his home. He wanted to show them the best gift he had received: a new pair of gloves. They are not just any gloves, however. The special bionic devices(仿生设备)let the 79-year-old pianist play with both hands for the first time in more than 20 years.

By his retirement(退休) last March, Martins had received 24 medical operations to try to reduce pain caused by a disease and from a series of accidents. Before the gloves, which were especially developed for him, Martins could only play songs slowly with his thumbs and, sometimes, his pointer fingers.

However, one designer believed Martins’ retirement had come too early. The designer, Ubirata Bizarro Costa, created special bionic gloves for Martins’ hands. The gloves help move his fingers up after they press(按) on the piano keys. Costa said he created early models based on images of Martins’ hands, but he said those models were not good. He then decided to tell Martins about his work. Costa and Martins then spent several months testing several kinds of models. Finally, the perfect model came in December, and cost only $125.

These days, Martins never takes off his new gloves, even when he goes to sleep. Martins said, “I have received more than 100 devices in the last 50 years. None of those devices worked well or long enough, but these gloves do.”

The new gloves have given Martins a new goal. He hopes to play the piano at New York’s Carnegie Hall in October. He is already set to conduct a concert celebrating the 60th anniversary of his first appearance there.

1What do we know about Martins?

A.He hates playing the piano in bar.

B.He has been fired by a music company.

C.He has received the best present in his life.

D.He often discusses with his friends about music.

    2What caused the pianist’s pain?

    A.A failed operation. B.His friend’s death.

C.The new pair of gloves. D.A disease and some accidents.

3How did Costa and Martins create the perfect bionic gloves?

A.By testing different models. B.By pressing Martins’s fingers.

C.By examining Costa’s hands. D.By working with other companies

4What does Martins think of the special pair of gloves?

A.They are useless. B.They are frightening.

C.They are strange. D.They are satisfying.

  • 29、In most parts of the world, many students help their schools make less pollution. They join “environment clubs”. In an environment club, people work together to make our environment clean.

    ● No-garbage lunches. How much do you throw away after lunch? Environment clubs ask students to bring their lunches in bags that can be used again. Every week they will choose the classes that make the least garbage and report them to the whole school!

    ● No-car day. On the no-car day, nobody comes to school by car--not the students and not the teachers! Cars give pollution to the air, so remember:

    Walk, jump, bike or run.

Use your legs! It’s lots of fun!

    ● Turn off the water! Did you know that some toilets can waste twenty to forty m3 of water an hour? In a year that would fill a small river! In environment clubs, students mend those broken toilets.

We love our environment. Let’s work together to make it clean.
