26、In the 1970s, my family acquired Mrs Duck as a pet. Mrs Duck was actually a male duck but the name stuck. He would spend hours “fighting” his own reflection — seen in the mirror or the glasses door. If our dog happened to be wandering past, the duck would attack him. Mrs Duck would ride around the backyard on the dog’s back screaming all the way, biting poor old Dog on the back of the head as he flapped his wings.
Dog was either too frightened, too good-natured or enjoyed the attention because he never beat back. Much to our amusement, Dog would tear around the yard with Mrs Duck lying on his back.
This went on for two years, until a neighbour politely asked if we would like to give Mrs Duck to one of her friends, a farmer. They lived on a large farm and their female duck had been killed when a fox got into the yard. Mum agreed as she understood that Mrs Duck was very frustrated.
A few days later, the beaming farmer was on our doorstep with a huge plate of raw steak asking to speak to our mother. “Mrs Duck had only been in the yard a couple of days when I heard a loud noise,” he told her. “I raced to the duck pen to find he had a fox seriously injured, cornered in the yard against the wire netting, wings flapping and continuously screaming. ” The farmer dispatched the fox with a shotgun and Mrs Duck was an instant hero.
Mrs Duck’s fearlessness in the face of any animal that eats meat had set him apart. From then on we called him Mrs Duck, Fox Hunter.

27、Do you remember the name of your kindergarten teacher? I do. Her name was Mrs White. I don’t remember much about what we learned in her class, but my mother once told me that we used to write a lot. And I would bring back what I wrote and she would look at it and see there were so many mistakes. But no red corrections. And always a star. It worried my mother, so one day she went to meet Mrs White and asked her why she never corrected my mistakes or pointed out grammatical errors.
Mrs White said, “The children are just beginning to get excited about using words and forming sentences. I don’t want to dampen (使受挫折) that enthusiasm with red ink. Spelling and grammar can wait. The wonder of words won’t…” She maybe didn’t say it exactly like that. My mother gave me what she could remember. I added in the rest. I grew up learning to use words like that.
And it occurred to me that if Mrs. White had used her red pen more, I probably wouldn’t be telling you about this now. I look back now and think she must have been a rather extraordinary teacher to allow the joy, wonder and excitement of expression to flower like that. Because to bloom is better than not to bloom.
I used to misspell ‘beautiful’ a lot. Pretty is easier to spell but it doesn’t hold as much as you mean sometimes. I kept on using ‘beautiful’. Eventually the letters settled into their right places. And thanks to Mrs White, I had been writing what I meant even if I couldn’t quite spell it out. Life isn’t Pretty. It’s Beautiful.

29、It is not always easy to keep a conversation going in English. You might not be sure about what to say. Or maybe you are afraid that your pronunciation is not good. So how can we continue a conversation in English? 【1】
Listen and follow up
First, remember the importance of listening. Listen to the other person attentively, so that you can ask a follow-up question. For example, let’s say the other person tells you, “I just got back from a trip to Canada.” 【2】 Where did you go in Canada? What was your favorite place there?
How was the food there?
Avold simple “yes” or “no” questions
If you want to keep a conversation going, it’s a good idea to ask questions that cannot be answered with a simple “yes” or “no”. If the other person asks you a “yes” or “no” question, try to give a longer answer to help keep the conversation going.
For example, a friend might ask, “Hey, have you seen the new Star Wars movie?” You could just answer, “No, I haven’t.” 【3】 You could answer: “No, but I plan to see it soon. How about you?”
【4】
Do not worry about your pronunciation. If your pronunciation is a little different, the other person will still understand your message if you try speaking slowly and clearly. 32、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 续写的词数应为150左右。
After graduation, Jason went to work in a big business. The schedule was very tight and he was so busy working, travelling from one place to another, that he was always on business for weeks without going to his mother’s home. And this year, he hadn’t seen his mother for months. Mother’s Day was coming up, and he would have managed to go back home, but this year he was just too busy and too tired. One day, when he was driving in a small town, he saw a flower shop. He said to himself, “I know what I will do. I’ll send my mother some flowers,“
He stopped and went into the flower shop and saw a boy talking to a girl in it. “How many roses can I get for five dollars?”, the boy asked. The girl was trying to explain that roses were expensive. Maybe the boy would be happy with something else.
“No, I have to have roses,” he said. “It has to be red roses, because my mum likes them best. It’s Mother’s Day. I want to get something special.” He was stubborn.
The girl in the shop looked at the boy and was just shaking her head. Something inside Jason was touched by the boy’s voice. It seemed that he wanted to get those roses very much. Jason looked at the boy and said to the girl that he would pay for the boy’s roses.
The girl looked at the boy and said, “Okay, I will give you ‘a dozen red roses for your dollars." The boy almost jumped into the air. He took the flowers and ran out. It was worth more than fifty dollars just to see that kind of excitement.
Jason ordered his own flowers and asked the girl to have them taken to his mother. After that, with relief, he drove down the road.
Paragraph 1:
Not long after his driving, he saw the boy...
