二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Usually, when your teacher asks a question, there is only one correct answer. But there is one question that has millions of correct answers. That question is “What’s your name?” Everyone gives a different answer, but everyone is correct.

Have you ever wondered about people’s names? Where do they come from? What do they mean?

People’s first names, or given names, are chosen by their parents. Sometimes the name of a grandparent or other member of the family is used. Some parents choose the name of a well-known person. A boy could be named George Washington Smith; a girl could be named Helen Keller Jones.

Some people give their children names that mean good things. Clara means “bright”; Beatrice means “one who gives happiness”; Donald means “world ruler”; Leonard means “as brave as a lion”.

The earliest last names, or surnames, were taken from place names. A family with the name Brook or Brooks probably lived near a brook(小溪); someone who was called Longstreet probably lived on a long, paved road. The Greenwood family lived in or near a leafy forest.

Other early surnames came from people’s jobs. The most common job name is Smith, which means a person who makes things with iron or other metals. In the past, smiths were very important workers in every town and village. Some other job names are: Carter — a person who owned or drove a cart; Potter—a person who made pots and pans.

The ancestors of the Baker family probably baked bread for their neighbors in their native village. The Carpenter’s great-great-great-grandfather probably built houses and furniture.

Sometimes people were known for the color of their hair or skin, or their size, or their special abilities. When there were two men who were named John in the same village, the John with the gray hair probably became John Gray. Or the John was very tall could call himself John Tallman. John Fish was probably an excellent swimmer and John Lightfoot was probably a fast runner or a good dancer.

Some family names were made by adding something to the father’s name. English-speaking people added –s or –son. The Johnsons are descendants of John; the Roberts family’s ancestor was Robert. Irish and Scottish people added Mac or Mc or O. Perhaps all of the MacDonnells and the McDonnells and the O’Donnells are descendants of the same Donnell.

【1】Which of the following things do the surnames in the passage NOT talk about?

    A.Places where people lived.

    B.People’s jobs.

    C.Talents that people had.

    D.People’s characters.

【2】According to the passage, the ancestors of the Potter family most probably ________.

    A.made kitchen tools or containers

    B.made things with metals

    C.owned or drove a cart

    D.built houses and furniture

【3】If an English couple whose ancestors lived near a leafy forest wanted their new-born son to become a world leader, the baby might be named ________.

    A.Beatrice Smith

    B.Leonard Carter

    C.Donald Greenwood

    D.George Longstreet

【4】The underlined word “descendants” in the last paragraph means a person’s ________.

    A.friends and family members

    B.former ancestors

    C.colleagues(同事) and partners

    D.later generations

  • 27、   Why do you run? Different people have different reasons. Whatever your reason is, there’s one thing we can be sure of: Running is much better injury-free. In his book, Dr. Jordan Metzl’s Running Strong, Metzl has the perfect suggestions for enjoying your running without losing your well-being (健康). Here are five must-follow rules for injury-free running:

Train for your level of fitness and your goals.

Don’t run more miles than your body can deal with. If you run for fitness and your goal is about 30 minutes a day, that’s cool. But if you are just starting out, 1

Wear the right shoes for your feet.

You will hear lots of opinions about whether running shoes really help prevent injury and whether you should even wear them. 2 And some of you may need a little added assistance from inserts (鞋垫).

    3

Be honest about how much sleep you need and stick to it. The cool runner is the one who wins the race. Sleep will get you there.

Fuel (提供能量) your body right for running and recovery.

4 And after a workout or race, you need to deliver nutrients to all the body rebuilders in your muscles, so they can do their job and get you back into tip-top shape for your run tomorrow.

    Pay attention to pain.

When pain changes the way you run, stop running. 5 And use dynamic rest (动态休息) to stay in shape until you are back on your running feet.

    A. Get seven to eight hours of sleep every night.

    B. Try to find out what is going on and treat the pain.

    C. you need to get there slowly.

    D. Running should be seen as fun rather than pain.

    E. It is because of the health benefits, including lowering your risk of disease.

    F. The right running shoes can help correct foot-movement problems that lead to injury.

    G. A good pre-run meal plan is one that keeps you stepping strong.

  • 28、If you live in Washington, D. C., or Redwood, Calif., you may have noticed a small, boxy robot rolling along a local sidewalk, minding its own business, but attracting the attention of many a curious onlooker.

The robots, which look like electric rice cookers with wheels, were part of a pilot program last year by Starship Technologies focused on delivering(运送)meals from local restaurants in dozens of cities around the world.

This week, the company showed plans to broaden its delivery service beyond food to include packages, a move that made it “the world’s first robot package delivery service”. The package delivery service can only be applied in some cities in the US.

The wheeled robots have a top speed of 4 mph and can detect barriers(检测路障) from as far as 30 feet away. “The robot can operate through just about anything,” says Nick Handrick, head of operations for Starship’s D. C. office, “If you have something in the way, it’s able to climb it.” By giving customers control of when deliveries occur, Starship Technologies is promoting its service as a way to combat package theft.

To sign up for the service, which costs a little more than $10 per month, customers need to download the company’s app. Customers then create a “Starship Delivery Address,” a unique address inside a Starship facility, instead of a home address, where they can have packages sent from places such as Amazon. com.

Once a package is delivered to the Starship address, customers receive a text notice that allows them to schedule a home delivery through robot. The robots are opened by customers with a mobile phone code (代码).

【1】What do we know about Starship Technologies company?

A.Packages are delivered by its robots all round America.

B.Its robots have taken on package delivery for a long time.

C.It is the first to provide robot package delivery service.

D.Its delivery service is the best of all in the world.

【2】What does the underlined word “combat” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

    A.propose.

    B.prevent.

    C.report.

    D.discover.

【3】What can we learn about robot package delivery service?

A.Customers can’t open the robots without a mobile phone code.

B.Starship Delivery Address is the customer’s home address.

C.Customers have to pay a little more than $10 each time.

D.Robots themselves have control over when to deliver packages.

【4】What is the passage mainly about?

A.Robot delivery service is taking off.

B.Humans are being replaced by robots.

C.Everything can be done by robots.

D.Packages can be delivered by robots.

五、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 32、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When Jackie came to his first piano lesson in his mother’s car, he was already 11 years old.I preferred that students began at an earlier age, but owing to his insistence, I took him as a student. As much as Jackie tried, he lacked the sense of basic rhythm (节奏). At the end of each lesson, he’d say, “My mom’s going to hear me play someday.” But it seemed hopeless. I only knew his mother from a distance as she waited in her aged car, but never stepped in.

Then one day Jackie stopped coming to our lessons. I thought about calling him but assumed (认为), because of his lack of ability, that he had decided to quit. I also was glad that he stopped coming—he was a bad advertisement for my teaching!

Several weeks later I mailed a letter on the upcoming concert to the students’ homes. Surprisingly, Jackie received and asked me if he could be in the concert. I told him that the concert was not for dropouts (辍学者), but for current pupils. He said that his mom had been sick and unable to take him to piano lessons but he was still practicing. I didn’t know what led me to agree eventually.

The night for the concert came. The high school gymnasium was packed with parents and friends. I put up Jackie last in the program. I thought that any damage he would do would come at the end of the program and the negative effect would be reduced to the minimum (最小值).

The concert went off smoothly. Then Jackie came up on stage. His clothes were wrinkled (皱巴巴的) and his hair looked messy (凌乱的). “Why didn’t his mother at least make him comb his hair for this special night?” I thought.

    注意:续写词数应为150左右。

Unexpectedly, Jackie chose Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.21 in C Major.
