26、I grew up in a poor family. This was something I did not realize until I was older. I thought everyone in the city took the bus, because everyone in my neighborhood took the bus. I thought everyone in the city used the food bank, because all my friends’ families ate the same government-labeled food as my family ate. We all wore hand-me-down clothes.
Shopping with my mom made me first understand that my family was a little different. My mom used paper money that looked different from the paper money others in line were using. I asked my mom why our money looked different. She said that we used food stamps that were provided by government so we could eat.
In high school, I was still embarrassed and wished we were not so poor, but I loved my mom and the other members of my family and knew we had things to be proud of. Though my mother was uneducated, she taught me how to love and told me to believe in myself. Growing up in a poor family taught me perseverance(毅力) I have always believed in myself and my abilities. I knew I could focus on schoolwork and build a life that looked different from my childhood.
As I became a man, I started understanding how my experiences made it possible for me to be resilient(有适应力的), and how to respect people for who they are as an individual and not by what they have. I think there are a lot of fixed images placed on those experiencing poor life that do not actually come from the people experiencing it. These opinions come from people on the outside trying not to look into the experience. “Hardworking, trustworthy, reliable, clean, efficient, successful and disciplined” are all words not specially connected with poor life. But those words are very much shown by those experiencing poor life. I am proud to be who I am and proud of where I’m from.

27、Toni Morrison was an American write who received the Nobel Prize in Literature. Her novels Beloved, Song of Solomon and others explored the way African-Americans search for freedom and identity in a country obsessed (受困扰的) with skin color. Morrison was nearly 40 when she published her first novel The Bluest Eye in 1970. The Nobel Prize committee described her writing as language itself, a language she wants to liberate from race. Her novels discussed America’s past, focusing on black history and the effects of slavery and racism. She called her characters “the unfree at the heart of the democratic (民主的) experiment”.
In 1988, she won the Pulitzer Prize for her novel Beloved, the story of a mother who kills her baby daughter rather than permit her to be born into slavery. It became a best-seller and was later made into a film with Oprah Winfrey. Many Americans admired her as the country’s greatest living writer, including former President Barack Obama.
She was born in 1931. She attended Howard University, an all-black university in Washington, D. C. At Howard, she read African, British and American literature, including writers William Faulkner and Virginia Woolf. After a short marriage, she became a single mother of two sons and worked as a book editor in New York.
Several publishers rejected her first book The Bluest Eye but it impressed The New York Times’ book critic John Leonard, who believed Morrison was an important new voice. He said her writing was “so charged with pain and wonder that the novel becomes poetry”.
Morrison enjoyed her literary fame and was proud of her Nobel Prize won in 1993.

28、‘Tribes’ everywhere have their own special language
As someone who's been studying English for many years now, you might think you know the English language pretty well. But if you overheard a British person say, "A Billy left some bees and honey in my sherbet(冰冻果露)last night," would you understand what they meant?
Probably not, but many native speakers may not know what this person was saying either.
His or her tribe. In plain English, the sentence would be, " A customer left some money in my cab last night."
So, what exactly is meant by "tribe"?
A recent article on the BBC Culture website pointed out that nearly all of us are a part of a tribe. This is a group that defines(定义) who we are and even how we speak. And with each tribe comes its own "secret language", as the BBC called it.
If you work in a certain industry---education, for example---you may use slang toords(俚 语)and acronyms(首字母缩略词)that only other people who work in that industry would understand. Or if you live in a certain city, you might use a slang word to describe a landmark in the city, that only locals would understand.
These so-called secret languages each have their own fascinating history. In the US, for example, the underground "ballroom"(舞厅) tribe of 1970s and 80s New York City and its language were showcased(展现) in the 2018 FX show Pose.
These secret words don't always stay within their tribes, however. Words from many tribes, especially musical cultures such as rap and hip-hop, often enter people's everyday vocabulary. For example, the phrase "to have beef"--- meaning " to be in a conflict"---was made popular by US rappers. Today, it's widely used by native English speakers all over the world.
As BBC reporter Susie Dent wrote, " We are all surrounded by amazing secret languages, full of history and stories and in-jokes(内部笑话). And one thing is certain: our tribal conversations will never run out.”
【1】The example at the beginning of the text is mainly used to .
A.prove that English is hard to learn
B.explain the meaning of tribes
C.teach readers how to communicate with London cab drivers
D.show how the languages of tribes are often difficult for outsiders to understand
【2】What can we know about secret languages?
A.They mostly came from musical cultures.
B.Some words from them are popular in everyday conversation.
C.They first started in New York City in the 1980s.
D.They have failed to become popular among young people.
【3】What is Dent's attitude toward the future of secret languages?
A.Confident. B.Worried. C.Uninterested. D.Objective(客观的).
29、 Finances (经济) were low for many months after the Strike (罢工) .Mama decided to rent (出租) the front room Mr. Hyde called in answer to the "Roomer for Rent" sign in the window.
Mr. Hyde didn’t seem to have any regular hours of business, but he always spoke pleasantly(愉快地) to the children, and whenever he passed Mama in the hall he bowed (鞠躬) to her.
Only Aunt Jenny disagreed "When," she asked, "is he going to pay his rent?”
"ls hard,” Mama said, "to ask. Surely he will pay soon."
When the rainy weather came, Mama worried that Mr. Hyde's room was cold in the evenings, so she had Papa invite him into the warm kitchen to sit with us. Christine, Nels, and I did our homework under the big lamp, and Papa and Mr. Hyde smoked by the stove. Mams worked quietly at the sink
Mr. Hyde advised Nels on his high-school courses and sometimes helped him with his Latin. Nels became interested, his grades improved, and he stopped begging Papa to let him quit school and go to work. After we finished our schoolwork and Mama had settled down in the rocking chair with her mending, Mr. Hyde would tell us of his travels and adventures.
One night he began to read Dickens to us. Soon it became an accepted fact that after our homework was done, Mr. Hyde would bring down one of his bocks and read aloud. And strange new worlds were opened to us. After David Copperfield 《大卫科波菲尔》 and The Old Curiosity Shop《老古玩店》, Mr. Hyde gave us Shakespeare (莎士比亚). He had a fine deep voice and sounded as we imagined a great actor would sound.
Even when the warm weather came, we children don't beg to go out in the evenings to play. I think Mama was glad; she never liked us running the streets.
"I must go," he told Mama. "I shall leave the books for Nels and the Children. Here is my check for all I owe(欠) you, madam. and my sincere thanks for your hospitality(热情好客).” We were sorry to see Mr. Hyde leave, but it was with great excitement that we brought his books out to the kitchen. There were so many of them!
It was too bad that Aunt Jenny was still there when Mr. Kruper came. He was angry. “That man Hyde was a crook (骗子) !” he shouted. "Look at this check he gave me It's no good! The bank people tell me he cashed them all over the neighbourhood."
Aunt Jenny's triumphant (得意的) nod said as plainly as word—I told you so. Mama looked around at all of us. Her eyes rested longest on Nels. "Read," she told him, "read to us from Ivanhoe 《艾凡赫》.
