  • 22、The World Health Organization has for the first time expressed “cautions optimism” that the growth in new Ebola cases in West Africa may be slowing down.

Bruce Aylward, who is in charge of the WHO response to Ebola, said in Geneva that he was particularly encouraged by evidence of a downward trend in Liberia, one of the three worst-affected countries.

The WHO’s official total number of Ebola cases has reached 13.703—a big jump from the10,141 cases it reported four days ago. But Dr Aylward said that was mainly the result of the data being updated with old cases, rather than new cases arising.

“Do we feel confident that the response is now getting an upper hand on the virus? Yes, we are seeing a slowing rate of new cases, very definitely.” Dr Aylward said.

However, Dr Aylward also urged people not to celebrate prematurely over any apparent downturn in the epidemic(传染病). “I’m terrified that the information will be misinterpreted and people will think Ebola is under control.” he said.

Any reduction in the battle against the virus might lead to “an oscillating(震荡的)pattern where the disease moves up and down”.

The improvement in Liberia seems to be due to a combination of more treatment facilities, better contact tracing and safer burial practices, together leading to fewer new infections from Ebola patients.

In Sierra Leone the number of cases continues to increase in some areas. “We’re still seeing this thing burning quite hot in parts of Sierra Leone,” Dr Aylward said

Tracing the progress of individual patients, the WHO estimates an overall death rate of 70 percent, though people who receive treatment in a well-equipped clinic are slightly less likely to die. The WHO plans to set up 56 Ebola clinics with 4,700 beds in West Africa. Of these 15 clinics with 1,050 beds are already operational and another 22 clinics are expected to open during November.

Meanwhile, two former NATO(北约)secretaries-general and dozens of leading European politicians have urged the alliance to send troops, aircraft and ships to west Africa to help contain the Ebola crisis.

1In the first paragraph, “cautious optimism” probably refers to ________.

    A. Ebola under control thanks to WHO’s caution

    B. the decline of new Ebola cases though not defeated

    C. celebrations on the downturn in Ebola in Liberia

    D. More treatment and relief supplies to West Africa

2Why did Dr Aylward urge people not to celebrate prematurely?

    A. Because celebrations may increases infections.

    B. Because the pattern of the disease is up and down.

    C. Because people may be misled to cease the battle.

    D. Because we are getting an upper hand on the virus.

3Which of the following didn’t contribute to the improvement in Liberia?

    A. better contact tracing   B. more treatment facilities

    C. safer burial practices   D. data updated with old cases

4According to the text, “burning quite hot” means ________.

    A. very severe   B. extremely hot

    C. on fire   D. well received

  • 23、According to a recent study, children explore more than adults and it helps them learn better than grown-ups. The study notes when adults attempt something new but get a negative result, they often won’t try it again.

Dr. Alison Gopnik, one of the co-authors, said “That might seem like the most basic kind of intelligence—even rats stay away from a path leading to a shock. The downside is that we will never learn the world is more complicated. Children, however, have intense curiosity and drive to explore and this helps them learn many different things and quickly.”

Together with NYU scientist Emily Liquin, Gopnik conducted a scientific experiment to test if young children’s drive to explore more than grown-ups influences the way they learn.

They gave 64 young children and 87 adults a game where each placed different blocks on a machine with one rule: If the machine lights up, they get a prize consisting of a star, but if the machine doesn’t light up, they lose twice as much. The goal of the game was to discover that all the blocks work except for the ones with white spots.

Most of the children were able to figure out the rule correctly, whereas more than 70% adults couldn’t, but it came at a cost: The children earned fewer stars.

The experiment shows adults often leap to faster conclusions, while children are more willing to explore and gather more information before they decide on a result.

The experiment only studied four to seven-year-olds compared to adults in the United States, noting more research is needed to generalize it to a broader population and context, according to the paper.

Gopnik concludes, “We grown-ups are often so anxious to exploit that we don’t explore, so afraid of losing stars that we miss the chance to learn something new. Children, however, are natural explorers, willing to sacrifice stars for the sake of information. We need both types of thinking to grow up, but adults might learn something from those curious kids.”

【1】Why did Gopnik mention rats in Paragraph 2?

A.To show adults’ avoiding bad results is understandable.

B.To compare whether adults are much cleverer than rats.

C.To tell us rats are appropriate subjects in experiments.

D.To suggest that rats are clever enough to choose safe paths.

【2】What do we know about the experiment?

A.It aimed to test if children have more drive to explore.

B.Most adults could understand the game rule correctly.

C.Children got better results than adults in the game.

D.It has some limitations and needs further research.

【3】What does Gopnik mean according to the last paragraph?

A.Adults’ way of thinking should be abandoned.

B.The two ways of thinking should be combined.

C.Children are better at getting information.

D.Adults should learn to think in children’s way.

【4】Based on the study, which of the following is desirable in educating kids?

A.Inspiring kids to explore regardless of risks.

B.Encouraging kids to be brave to try new things.

C.Motivating kids to draw conclusions quickly.

D.Teaching kids not to care about gains and losses.

  • 24、Teachers are one of the professions least at risk of being automated. A job that requires emotional intelligence and flexibility — in adapting lesson plans on the fly to a particular group of children, for example — is not one particularly well-suited to robots.

Artificial intelligence (AI), however, still deserves a role in the classroom. This is not as a replacement for teachers, but as a tool or an assistant that can aid them both in trying to close the gap in achievement between the rich and the poor and in making up for lost teaching time, for instance.

The principle of machine learning is to enhance humans’ existing capacities. The best AI apps promise to improve teachers’ knowledge of what their students need, how best they deliver the teaching, and which students require the most help — from a human teacher — to keep up with their learning. Besides, poor and unequal schooling, leaving too many children behind, is one of the deepest roots of inequality and low productivity. If AI can help target existing teaching resources better, the benefits could be incalculable.

Therefore, smart policy is urgent. There must be a focus on the teaching philosophy behind the programs, as well as ensuring that any decisions made by machine learning are under human control. In education, choices made by AI could set a direction for the rest of a child’s life.

These may be common concerns about AI, but education is particularly sensitive — especially the ownership and control of any data generated through the platforms. Schools, too, will need to prevent teachers, who already have plenty of responsibilities, from also having to keep up to date with thousands of apps. AI belongs in the classroom only so long as it enhances the humankind.

【1】What role should AI play in the classroom?

    A.An assistant to help teachers.

    B.An aid to punish students.

    C.A machine to replace teachers.

    D.A tool to protect students.

【2】Which is the benefit of using AI apps in teaching?

A.It tells which teacher needs the most help.

B.It instructs teachers how to deliver speeches.

C.It provides ways for teachers to make money.

D.It helps balance the existing teaching resources.

【3】What matters most in AI teaching?

    A.Improving the humankind.

    B.Setting a direction for education.

    C.Preventing teachers from using apps.

    D.Producing data through online platforms.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.The Popularity of E-Teaching Apps

B.The Application and Flexibility of AI

C.Rules for Bringing AI into the Classroom

    D.Approaches to Enhancing Teaching Online
