二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Is there any evidence that the standard of English as a foreign language has improved in the years since the Second World War? Naturally, as it is the world language, more and mere people are taught it and use it. But do they speak it or write it or understand it better than their patents’ or grandparents’ generations?

Have standards declined? There is no objective way of answering this question. Tests of the traditional sort — compositions, precis writing, and so on — have always been subjective, so they cannot be used to judge whether people have got better or not over the years. But so-called objective tests are useless as a measure of progress too. They have not been used consistently (一贯的) in the same “concentration” over the period they have been in use, so there is no way of comparing exams “now” and “then”. Moreover, usually in the form of multiple choice questions, they do not, by and large, test the things that really count in mastering a language.  Even comprehension is a partly “creative” activity in real life, as we have to think of possible meanings for ourselves rather than have them suggested for us from outside. And people can be trained in the techniques of multiple choice, while others fail the tests because they have been led astray (离开正道) precisely by their “suggestive” nature, so they are not really objective at all. We are left with only personal impression to go on.

My own is that, if anything, standards have declined somewhat in the last thirty or forty years, despite all the new theories, tools and techniques that have been developed. I am not alone in this judgment. In Sweden, for instance, Professors Johannes Hedberg and Gustav Korlen, two of the most experienced workers in the field; have on several occasions drawn attention to the lack of progress in the teaching of foreign languages since the late fifties. Yet Sweden is a sophisticated (先进的) society with extremely high educational and academic standards, and very concerned not to be cut off from the rest of the world. If such a country cannot achieve advances in the study of foreign languages, it is unlikely that many, if any, others have done so.

Japan is another community where remarkably little progress has been made in the learning of English. It is probably as important for Japan as for Sweden to master that language, and there is much academic effort put into linguistic (语言学的) research of various kinds. Yet the average standard of language learning is abysmally low, particularly for such a highly literate and educated society. This is no doubt in part the result of a vicious circle (恶性循环): many of the professors of English at Japanese universities are themselves incapable of speaking or writing or even understanding the language well.

1Which of the following is TRUE according to the author?

A.Multiple choice questions are objective because people cannot be trained any techniques.

B.Sweden emphasizes the teaching of English without paying attention to other countries.

C.We have to depend on our own impression to judge the English standards.

D.Compositions are useful to test people’s English ability because people have to write out their viewpoints.

2The so-called objective tests cannot be used as a measure of progress because _______.

A.the people who design the tests are changing constantly

B.the tests do not always focus on the same thing

C.the way of scoring is not scientific

D.they contain too many reading comprehension questions

3The author’s attitude towards present English standards is _______.

    A.negative B.indifferent (漠不关心的)

    C.sympathetic D.positive

  • 27、   Three years ago I worked for a few weeks as a doctor in a new dental clinic (牙科诊所) at Victor Harbor, to the south of Adelaide and an hour further away than my usual workplace. My first day there was a rush — driving to a new clinic and getting used to the clinical environment.

As it was all new to me, I took off my rings: my wedding ring, and one that was an anniversary (周年纪念日) gift from my husband. I put them in a tissue (纸巾) and placed them beside my computer. During my lunch break, I noticed the tissue and thought that it did not look very clean and threw it into the rubbish bin. I went about my work and my day went well; I met new patients and felt that I had been productive.

Driving home at the end of the day, just moments before I reached my house, I noticed that my rings were missing. I felt the heat in my body rise, my cheeks (脸颊) burning red. I felt sick to my stomach.

I spent an hour or so making calls, trying to find my rings. The first people I called were my manager and clinical leader and they gave me a few phone numbers for cleaners. I got in touch with a lady who managed the cleaning services for the clinic, and she told me that the bins had already been collected.

I knew nothing could be done now. I had lost my rings. But after two or so hours, I received the most amazing phone call. The cleaner had gone through the bins and found my rings! I was so thankful to her, someone who had taken the trouble to go through the bins — which is not a pleasant task — to find my priceless rings.

I worked at that clinic the following day, so I bought chocolates to thank this wonderful person. Unfortunately I did not get to meet her as she was not at work that day.

1What can we say about the author’s first day at the clinic?

A.Busy but fruitful. B.Relaxing and good.

C.Tiring and boring. D.Disorganized but special.

    2What happened to the author?

    A.She made mistakes during work.

B.She received a gift from her husband.

C.She failed to finish her work in time.

D.She threw her rings away carelessly.

3How did the author feel after calling the lady?

    A.Thankful. B.Surprised.

    C.Heartbroken. D.Frightened.

4What can we learn from the author’s experience?

    A.Smiles brighten people up.

B.Strangers are usually of little help.

C.Where there is a will, there is a way.

D.An act of kindness can mean a lot.

  • 28、What’s better: private school vs public school? Choosing which school to send your children to can be a very hard decision to make. 【1】

Ask about testing scores. Students at private schools tend to outscore public school students on standardized tests, which can affect your child’s ability to get into college. 【2】 Researchers have used the same data to come to conflicting conclusions. Other factors like socioeconomic status, can influence student’s scores, regardless of where they are educated.

【3】 In general, public schools tend to have larger class sizes than private schools. If you need a school that can give more attention to individual students, you might consider a private school or a smaller public school.

Tour the school. Before you even begin to choose between a public or private one, you’ll need to schedule a tour of the school you’re interested in. Do the students look happy and engaged? Are the learning spaces bright and clean? 【4】 Taking your children along gives the them chance to see the school and decide if it feels like a comfortable environment to them.

Don’t put too much stock in online ratings. 【5】 But they could also have fantastic teachers and principals. Talking to others help you figure out if this is true. Therefore, don’t write a school off just because its ratings are a little low.

In a word, knowing what matters to you in terms of the differences between public and private education can make your decision a little easier.

    A.The final decision is yours.

    B.Take into account class size.

C.Some practical actions can help a lot.

D.However, there is some debate about this.

E.You can learn a lot about these when you visit.

F.Same schools might have unfavorable comments.

G.Decide how important private schools are to your child.

  • 29、Traffic Management

Traffic lights are key tools for regulating traffic now. They are not, however, perfect.Drivers exchange the traffic jams that would happen at unmanaged crossings for a pattern of stop-go movement that can still be annoying, and which burns more fuel than a smooth passage would.

Creating such a smooth passage means adjusting a vehicle's speed so that it always arrives at the lights when they are green. That is theoretically possible, but practically hard.Roadside signs wired to traffic lights can help get the message across a couple hundred metres from a crossing, but such signs are expensive, and are not widespread.Margaret Martonosi and Emmanouil Koukoumidis at Princeton University, and Li-Shiuan Peh at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, however, have an idea that could make the process cheaper and more effective.Instead of a hardwired network of signs, they propose to use mobile-phone applications. The driver must load the team's software, named SignalGuru, into his phone and then put it on a special thing attached to the inside of his car's windscreen, with the camera lens (镜头) pointing forward.SignalGuru is designed to detect traffic lights and track their status as red, yellow or green. It broadcasts this information to other phones in the area that are fitted with the same software, and — if there are enough of them, the phones thus each know the status of most of the lights around town.Using this information, SignalGuru is able to calculate the traffic-light schedule for the area and suggest the speed at which a driver should travel in order to avoid red lights.

Tests in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where five drivers were asked to follow the same route for three hours, and in Singapore, where eight drivers were asked to follow one of two routes for 30 minutes, revealed that SignalGuru was capable of predicting traffic-light activity with an accuracy of 98.2% and 96.3% respectively, in the two cities. This was particularly impressive because in Cambridge the lights shifted, roughly half-way through the test, from their unbusy schedule to their afternoon-traffic schedule, while in Singapore lights are adaptive, using detectors fixed under the road to determine how much traffic is present and thus when a signal should change. In neither case was SignalGuru fooled.

Fuel consumption fell, too —by about 20%.SignalGuru thus reduces both annoyance and fuel use, and makes going back and forth to work a slightly less horrible experience.

【1】Roadside signs wired to traffic lights are not the best way to create a smooth passage because____________.

A.they are too costly and not widely used

B.they are expensive and easily break

C.they are complex and confusing to drivers

D.they are theoretically possible but practically useless

【2】SignalGuru is an application used on____________..

    A.a camera

    B.a computer

    C.a mobile phone

D.a GPS system in one's car

【3】With the information it collects and processes, SignalGuru is able to____________..

    A.help drivers avoid traffic accidents

B.allow drivers to adjust their speed

C.change the traffic lights in advance

D.send information to all cell phones

【4】The tests in Cambridge and Singapore were impressive because SignalGuru____________..

    A.proved to be unreliable

    B.operated at a high speed

    C.understood drivers' schedules

    D.functioned rather stably
