二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、I have a younger brother. To me, he is a fourteen-year-old kid named Joe, with blond hair and blue eyes. To others, he is different. Where I see a kid who just needs a lot more attention, others see a mentally disabled boy, a kid who cannot walk or talk or think for himself. I see someone who just makes daily routine a bit less routine. Others see an annoyance, I a bother.

This is not to say that I have never felt resentful (怨恨的) toward Joe. He is my brother, and with that comes responsibility. “Gina, could you stay in tonight and watch your brother?” “Gina, do me a favor and feed him dinner and change his diaper (尿布) later, please?” “Could you come home right after school today and get Joe off the bus?”

These are phrases that I have heard since I was twelve. And sure, they have made me resent my brother to a certain extent. I would think: that’s not fair! Everyone else can stay after and be a member of this club, or get extra help from that teacher. Or, all my friends are going out tonight, why can’t I? And, how come I have to feed him? He is not my son!

However, the small amount of resentment I feel toward my brother is erased a thousand times over by what I have learned from him. Besides making me responsible from a young age, and helping me be more accepting of all kinds of people, he has taught me to be thankful for what I have.

I know that there are moments in my life that I should cherish and that Joe will never experience. He will never laugh so hard that he cries. He will never feel the glory of a straight-A report card. He will never comfort a best friend crying on his shoulder. And he will never know how much his family love him.

Because he will never know, it is up to me to know, every second, how lucky I am. It is up to me to realize that life should be lived to its fullest, and that you should always, always be grateful that God, or whoever are the powers that be, gave you the ability to live your life the way you were meant to live it.

【1】We know from the first paragraph that Gina’s brother __________.

    A.causes trouble to neighbours

    B.pays more attention to others

    C.lives with mental disability

    D.considers daily routine a bother

【2】If Mother asks Gina to look after her brother now, what will she probably answer?

    A.I'm afraid not.

    B.No problem!

    C.It depends.

    D.It’s not fair!

【3】The passage intends to tell us that we should _____________.

    A.value the glory of success

    B.appreciate what life gives us

    C.comfort unfortunate people

    D.treasure meaningful moments

  • 27、   A few years ago, my younger sister and I were the first to board our flight for Norfolk, Virginia. Just as we were about to board the plane, a mechanic came out of the aircraft and blocked the door with his arms. He turned to the flight attendant and hurriedly stated, “We got problems!”

I thought to myself, “Why did I have to be the one to hear that? Why couldn’t I have been at the back of the line? I didn’t need to know that!” Very soon we were back in the terminal, waiting, and then finally back on the plane. I waited for the pilot to give an explanation. Pilots take courses to ease passengers’ mind, right? They know what to say to calm nerves.

Unfortunately, I didn’t think this pilot took that course. Soon his voice thundered throughout the plane. “Sorry for the delay, ladies and gentlemen. We had no power on the plane. We have a generator on the ground right now, and we’re going to jump—start the engine. Once we get them going, we’ll get up in the air and head to Norfolk, and see what happens.”

See what happens? We were going to get up in the air, and see what happens? Couldn’t we have another plan, one that’s been worked out just a little better?

At this point, all I could do was to laugh nervously. One woman started yelling, “Oh no! We’re going to crash!” There were sighs of desperation and anxiety spreading throughout the cabin. Finally, we got up in the air thirty minutes later, and what happened? Nothing—other than thrust(推力) and lift. We arrived in Norfolk, and no sooner had the wheels touched the ground than a round of applause burst out, as everyone throughout the airplane breathed a sigh of relief at the same time.

Although, I did sincerely like to have a plan better than “see what happens” worked out when flying—it really isn’t such a bad life strategy. Success will never be guaranteed. The best thing you can do is just get up in the air, and see what happens. Sometimes adjustments would be made in the air, or shall we say, in the middle of the process.

1The purpose of the text is to _______.

    A. introduce a frightening flight experience

    B. prove that taking a plane is dangerous

    C. show a way of making plans

    D. tell readers a life strategy

2What event was beyond the author’s expectation?

    A. The mechanic explained the problems to the passengers.

    B. The pilot said nothing to calm the passengers.

    C. The passengers arrived in Norfolk safely.

    D. The flight was delayed for half an hour.

3Having known the problems, many passengers _______.

    A. complained about the mechanic’s carelessness

    B. stood up and started yelling

    C. waited calmly for the problems to be solved

    D. felt hopeless and anxious

4Which opinion would the author most probably hold?

    A. To ensure success, don’t get started before you’ve got everything ready

    B. To avoid repeating failure, give yourself all the reasons why you can’t.

    C. To set up a business, don’t wait until you have everything you need.

    D. To achieve success, try to prepare for the worst.

  • 28、   My notebooks and I are inseparable. Look inside, and you will find stories from a girl with a heart and a mind of her own. When I write, I create a world where I have complete control and can escape from the pressure of everyday life. My story ideas are so fluid that they can come at any time, so I always keep a notebook with me to record them.

I have been writing since the third grade when my teacher gave the class an assignment to write a short poem. My poem was called “Spring Time” and it was the first time I had discovered that writing my thoughts or feelings was good for me. It became my way to relax and to escape. I wrote every day and found myself more relaxed. In the fifth grade, my teacher “forced” us to keep a journal, but the requirement was not a problem for me since I was always writing. I wrote to entertain myself. I also wrote to rebel (反抗) whenever I was tired of having to become what society and the world around me expected me to be.

My stories have grown into books that I hope to publish. a major character turned up in my stories—Kasumi. She was the result of an innocent idea to be free from the restraints of the world around me. She says the things that I can’t say aloud. In her world, she easily faces and overcomes all difficulties. Kasumi is stubborn, fearless and brave. She also has a career and a family, which she holds together emotionally and physically, just as my grandmother has done.

My grandmother lives by a simple rule: if you don’t like something, open your mouth and say something about it. She does not limit her expressions because of society’s expectations. She sets an example to me and helps to define who I am as a young woman. In this way, my grandmother is reflected in Kasumi.

In the ninth grade, my ways of expression expanded into acting. Through acting, I have leaned how to communicate physically, verbally and emotionally. When I act, I am able to fall into the roles. Each role is a representation of me. I started acting with the role of Mrs. Fezziwig in A Christmas Carol. Two years later, I received my biggest part as a narrator (叙述着) in our production of Romeo and Juliet.

Through acting and writing. I have developed characters like the strong and outgoing women in my family. I have come to realize that writing and acting have helped me to become more independent and confident. Acting has increased my ability to work through the problems of everyday life.

On stage, the character’s feelings and problems become mine. Their voices are mine. The freedom of acting on stage has improved my writing, making me have the authority to create scenes that are more realistic. My stories in my notebooks are versions of the world around me that are enlarged by my imagination. I can break the limitation of reality by becoming a character on stage or entering a world I created in my notebooks. The authority I feel while playing a character on stage adds to my passion for excitement and adventure created in the universe of my notebooks.

1The author values her notebooks in that ________.

A.she likes writing all her secrets in the notebooks

B.she usually keeps her daily schedules in the notebooks

C.the notebooks provide her with a world where she can be herself

D.the notebooks have helped her form the habit of writing poems

2What can we know from the second paragraph?

A.The teacher was always hard on the students.

B.Becoming a famous poet is the author’s dream.

C.Some students found it difficult to keep a journal.

D.The author felt very stressed because of the teacher.

3What does the underlined word “restraints” probably mean in the third paragraph?

    A.limits B.desires C.promises D.experiences

4It can be inferred from the passage that ________.

A.the life on stage is far away from reality

B.the author improved her writing through acting

C.the author is afraid to be faced with her real life

D.the characters on stage often make people con fused

  • 29、   When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Here are some British etiquette(礼仪) and customs international students ought to know.

    Visiting

In most houses in Britain, the doors are usually kept closed. It is customary to visit people at a pre-arranged time and day. Usually, people are not comfortable if you just drop in. Nevertheless, if someone says to drop in at any time, feel free to do so as long as it is not in the middle of the night. When you go into someone's house, do take your hat off (men only). It is impolite for men to wear hats indoors especially in churches.

    Greeting

In Britain, the handshake is a common form of greeting. When you meet people for the first time, it is normal to shake hands. A firm handshake is the norm(标准); there are no issues over gender in Britain. The usual formal greeting is 'How do you do? ' and a firm hand shake, but with a lighter touch between men and women. In Britain, unlike some other European countries, it is unusual to embrace or kiss the other person (unless they are family or a very close friend).

    Gifts

During birthday and Christmas celebrations, it is common for the British to exchange gifts between family members and close friends. The gift doesn’t need to be expensive, but it should usually show an attempt to find something that is related to the recipient's(接受者) interests. When invited to someone's home, it is normal to take along a box of good chocolates, a bottle of good wine or a bunch of beautiful flowers. Note that gifts are opened when received.

    Punctuality

The British are generally punctual(守时的), especially the scots. The British consider it impolite if you turn up late for an appointment. In most cases, the people you are meeting will be on time, call even if you will be 5 minutes later than you've promised. If you have been late or fail to keep your appointment, make an effort to contact the person to let them know. It is a good idea to telephone and offer your apologies.

1What do the British men usually do when they meet for the first time?

A.Embrace or kiss each other. B.shake hands firmly.

C.Bring an expensive gift. D.Take off their hats immediately.

2What present may the author recommend you if you attend a birthday party in Britain?

A.A book the receiver is interested in. B.A pet that you think is cute.

C.A red envelope with some money. D.A fantastic and expensive bike.

3Which of the following may be considered not polite for visiting British people?

A.Visit them at a scheduled time. B.Show up on time instead of arriving earlier.

C.Phone to tell them if one will be late. D.Pay an unexpected visit to give them a surprise.
