二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、When I was four years old,I got stung(螫) by a bee-twice in one week! After that,I had a fear of bees. That's when my parents suggested that I learn about bees instead of being frightened. I read picture books and watched videos about bees, and I learned that bees help make the food we eat because of their pollination(授粉). Take pizza, for example. If we didn't have bees to pollinate tomato plants,we wouldn't have tomatoes for sauce. And we wouldn't have cheese without pollination, either.

The bad news is that bees are struggling to survive. Many are dying. Some scientists think it might be because of chemicals that are used to kill other insects. What would happen if there were no more bees? I wanted to help. I thought, “What if I make lemonade, sell it,and raise money to help bees?” I talked to my grandmother Helen. She gave me her recipe(调制法) for lemonade. It came from a cookbook from 1940.

I added honey to her old recipe. That way,I could sell the lemonade and donate some of the money to groups that are helping to save bees. I could also support local beekeepers by using their honey in my product. And I would be educating others on the importance of bees and helping to save them.

My dad showed me how to work out what supplies I needed to buy. At first,I sold lemonade at a stand at a kids' business event. But I wanted to help bees all year round. We talked to a pizza place near where I live. They said they wanted to sell it. Now more than 30 stores sell it,too. This year we sold about 140,000 bottles. I love helping to save bees. It's the sweetest feeling ever.

    【1】After learning about bees,the author ________.

    A.discovered their importance to people

    B.developed an interest in insects

C.knew how to deal with them

    A.Bees’ worrying condition.

    B.A cookbook from 1940.

    C.Helen's special recipe.

    D.Her parents' words.

【3】Which of the following words can best describe the author?

    A.Careful and polite.

    B.Kind and caring.

    C.Brave and smart.

    D.Strong and patient.

【4】What’s the best title for the text?

  • 27、Vegans are persons who don’t eat meat, fish, eggs, dairy, and other animal products from their diet. The average parent who is not a vegan often is concerned when their child decides to become vegans, wanting their personal physician to talk their child out of it. Will their child get enough nutrition(营养) being a vegan? Don’t kids have to eat meat to get enough protein(蛋白质) in their diet?

Although not for everybody, a vegan diet does indeed have many health benefits, and if well planned, it can be a healthy diet for kids. One shouldn’t be crazy when talking about possible health benefits of being a vegan, though. Evidence doesn’t suggest that kids raised on a vegan diet are sick less often than other kids. Not all vegetarian foods are healthy—some are high in sugar, saturated fat(饱和脂肪), or cholesterol(胆固醇).

The vegan diet is typically low in cholesterol and saturated fat and is high in fiber and may lead to a lower risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and other diseases.

These health benefits led Dr. Benjamin Spock to recommend a strict vegan diet for all children over the age of 2 years, which advised that children shouldn’t be given products made from milk after they are two years old and that they can get plenty of protein and other nutrition from vegetables, beans, and other plant foods that avoid the fat and cholesterol that are in animal products.

Dr. Spock’s advice created a lot of arguments. It’s not because experts questioned the health benefits of a vegan diet, but they thought that parents might not take enough time and effort to plan a vegan diet that included enough nutrients to ensure the best growth in their children.

【1】What is the characteristic of a vegan diet?

A.It’s a diet without animal products.

B.It’s a diet of being rich in cholesterol.

C.It’s a diet of being rich in fat.

D.It’s a diet of being low in meat.

【2】What is Dr. Spock’ suggestion about the diet?

A.Parents need less time to prepare meals for children.

B.The vegan diet is widely accepted by most parents.

C.Children over 2 years old should avoid vegetable fat.

D.Children over 2 years old shouldn’t eat animal products.

【3】What is introduced in the last paragraph?

A.The origin of a strict vegan diet.

B.The effort to make a nutritious diet.

C.The difficulty of planning a strict vegan diet.

D.The details of ensuring enough nutrients for children.

【4】What is the suitable title of the text?

A.How to avoid the fat from the diet.

B.Health benefits of vegan diets for kids.

C.The shortcoming of eating meat for kids.

D.How to create more nutrients for children

Hyperbole and a Half, by Allie Brosh.

The book, based on Brosh’s wildly popular website, contains simple vignettes and comic drawings about her young life. The adventures she describes are mostly inside her head, where we hear and see her deep thoughts most of us are too shy to let out in public.

You will finish reading it in three hours, tops. But you’ll wish it went on longer, because it’s so funny and smart.

The Magic of Reality, by Richard Dawkins.

Dawkins, an evolutionary biologist at Oxford, has a gift for making science enjoyable. This book is as accessible as the TV series Cosmos is for younger audiences—and as relevant for older audiences. It’s an interesting, well-illustrated(图文并茂) science textbook offering attractive answers to big questions, like “How did the universe form?” and “What causes earthquakes?”

What If ? ,by Randall Munroe.

The subtitle of the book is “Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions,” and that’s exactly what it is. People write Munroe with questions that cover all fields of science: physics, chemistry, biology, etc.

Munroe’s explanations are funny, but the science supporting his answers is very accurate(精确的). It’s an entertaining read, and you’ll also learn a bit about things like ballistics, DNA, the oceans, and the atmosphere.

【1】What does the writer think of Brosh’s book?

    A.Interesting.

    B.Strange.

    C.Priceless.

    D.Boring.

【2】What is Dawkins good at as an evolutionary biologist at Oxford?

    A.Making TV series.

    B.Drawing pictures.

    C.Answering big questions.

    D.Making science attractive.

【3】What kind of questions do people mainly like to ask Randall Munroe?

    A.Funny questions in daily life.

    B.Scientific questions.

    C.Serious entertaining questions.

    D.Questions hard to answer.

  • 29、   Vegetarianism is growing in popularity in a lot of countries. And now, South Africa is one of them. Today, more and more South Africans are experimenting with the vegetarian (素食者) way of life by cutting meat out of their diet.

Some others are exploring veganism. Vegans (纯素者) are similar to vegetarians but they avoid all animal based products, including mike and eggs. Some vegans even do not eat honey. There is no official count of how many vegans there are in South Africa. But the interest has led to the birth of vegetarian and vegan restaurants in Johannesburg, the nation's economic center. And this year, Africa's first big vegan and plant-based festival was held in Cape Town. The Vegan & Plant Powered Show took place at the end of May.

But veganism can be a lonely road for many South Africans. The country is Africa's top consumer of meat from cows, pigs and sheep, based on information from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. Many South Africans express shock at the thought of giving up meat, which is central to celebrations and spirituality.

This is an issue for many African vegans, including Anesu Mbizvo. “In African traditional culture, a big part of a family's worth is their livestock (家畜), which decide the wealth of a family. And so when an African kills an animal at a gathering, it's thought that he would give away his wealth.” But she adds, “Offering home grown vegetables would not be considered to be valuable. I think that thought mainly prevents some people of African cultures from being vegans.”

Some South Africans are finding their path somewhere in the middle, Thirty-one-year-old Thandiwe Ngubeni is a communications specialist. She still eats meat but less and less of it as time goes by. “I feel more energetic when I eat a vegan meal. It actually gives me more energy.”

1What can we learn about vegans?

A.They can drink milk. B.They eat some animal meat.

C.They enjoy opening vegan restaurants. D.They refuse any product based on animals.

2What mainly stops some Africans being vegans according to Anesu Mbizvo?

A.Too many animals in the wild. B.Traditional views of livestock.

C.The influence from other countries. D.Not enough vegetables in the restaurant.

3What do we know about Thandiwe Ngubeni?

A.She is a vegan. B.She is an animal specialist.

C.She expects to eat more meat. D.She eats less and less meat.

4What can be the best title for the text?

A.Vegans'Behaviors Are Too Extreme. B.Vegetarians Are Not Popular Any Longer.

C.Many South Africans Welcome a Vegan Lifestyle. D.Meat in South Africa Will Become Less Delicious.

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、

The meaning of silence varies among cultural group. Silence may be 1, or they may be empty when a person has nothing to say. A silence in conversation may also show stubbornness, uneasiness, or worry. Silence may be viewed by some cultural groups as extremely uncomfortable; therefore attempts may be made to fill every 2 with conversation. Persons in other cultural groups value silence and view it as necessary for understanding a person’s needs. Many native Americans value silence and feel it is a basic part of 3 among people, just at some traditional Chinese and Thai persons do. Therefore when a person from one of these culture is speaking and suddenly stops, what may be 4 is that the person wants the listener to consider what has been said before continuing. In these culture, silence is a call for 5.

Other cultures may use silence in other ways, particularly when dealing with 6 among people or in relationships of people with different amounts of power. For example, Russian, French, and Spanish persons may use silence to show 7between parties about the topic under discussion. However, Mexicans may use silence when instructions are given by a person in authority(权威)rather than be rude to that person by arguing with him or her. In still another use, persons in Asian cultures may view silence as a sign of respect, particularly to an elder or a person in authority.

Nurses and other care-givers need to be aware of the 8 meanings of silence wen they come across the personal anxiety their patients may be experiencing. Nurses should recognize their own persona and cultural construction of silence so that a patient’s silence is not 9 too early or allowed to go on unnecessarily. A nurse who understands the healing 10 of silence can use this understanding to assist in the care of patients from their own and from other cultures.

  • 32、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

    A Vacation with My Mother

I had an interesting childhood. It was filled with surprises and amusements, all because of my mother---loving, sweet, yet absent-minded and forgetful. One strange family trip we took when I was eleven tells a lot about her.

My two sets of grandparents lived in Colorado and North Dakota, and my parents decided to spend a few weeks driving to those states and seeing all the sights along the way. As the first day of our trip approached, David, my eight-year-old brother, and I unwillingly said good-bye to all of our friends. Who knew if we’d ever see them again? Finally, the moment of our departure arrived, and we loaded suitcases, books, games, camping equipment, and a tent into the car and bravely drove off. We bravely drove off again two hours later after we’d returned home to get the purse and traveler’s checks Mom had forgotten.

David and I were always a little nervous when using gas station bathrooms if Mom was driving while Dad slept: “You stand outside the door and play lookout(放哨) while I go, and I’ll stand outside the door and play lookout while you go.” I had terrible pictures in my mind: “Honey, where are the kids?” “What?! Oh, Gosh…I thought they were being awfully quiet.” We were never actually left behind in a strange city, but we weren’t about to take any chances.

On the fourth or fifth night, we had trouble finding a hotel with a vacancy. After driving in vain for some time, Mom suddenly got a great idea: Why didn’t we find a house with a likely-looking backyard and ask if we could set up tent there? David and I became nervous. To our great relief, Dad turned down the idea. Mom never could understand our objections(反对). If a strange family showed up on her front doorstep, Mom would have been delighted. She thinks everyone in the world is as nice as she is. We finally found a vacancy in the next town.
