21、There was a 365-year-old oak tree by the sea. For it, each year was just like a day, because it only slept in winter. One summer afternoon, some mayflies(蜉蝣)were flying happily around it. Then the oak tree talked to one of them, “You must be so sad. Your whole life lasts just one day.” “Not at all,” the mayfly replied. “Things around me are so bright, warm and beautiful. They make me happy.” “But only for one day,” the oak tree said. Hearing that, the mayfly said, “You may have thousands of days, but I have thousands of moments. In my opinion, we have the same time to live.” Then it flew away.
Soon, winter came, and the oak tree went to sleep. Around Christmas, it had a dream. In the dream, the oak tree was with all things it loved, both small and great. As it grew bigger and taller into the sky, it felt that its roots(根)were free. It was a wonderful feeling. The oak tree felt like it was in heaven(天堂).

22、Time is not a fixed object. The idea of time in any given culture is largely a product created by beliefs, traditions, and values. In some cases, time is thought of as formless and is based on what is going on at the moment, rather than as a planned object. Others regard time as a machine: a real thing which is fixed, which can be divided into schedules (日程安排) and can be wasted.
Similarly, cultures are also likely to think of the passing of time in different ways as well. A society can be moved towards a specific (特定化的) understanding of history. Many cultures, such as British, Native American, Greek, French, Japanese, and some other Asian cultures, take the past, cultural history, and traditions as having the most importance, and use them as a guide in making present-day decisions. Some cultures see the present moment as the most important. Tradition holds little importance, and planning for the future is not the most important thing, but rather the present time is more valued, and these kinds of lifestyles are relaxed. Other societies can be future-oriented (关注未来的), and place an additional focus on planning and forward movement, and the present activities are treated as a bridge to this future goal. This is the common agreement in the United States.
How a person thinks of time can be understood in the way they work together with others. Someone with a focus on the future will hold schedules and times to be very important, as they are necessary for moving on to the next step. However, someone who lives more in the present may consider a certain meeting time as not fixed. In Italy and in many Arab countries, it is normal for people to be 30 minutes late for a meeting. It is different in the United States or Britain, for example, where lateness is accepted only up to 5 or 10 minutes.
The concept (概念) of time, and its flexibility (灵活多变), meaning, and even the nature of its existence (存在) is something which is deeply laid in the base of any culture. It is very important when entering into an agreement with someone, whether socially, or in a business setting, to realize that they may have a different idea about the importance of deadlines and schedules. No one can be right or wrong in their own way, but still people can be accidentally insulted (冒犯) as a result of a misunderstanding.
【1】From the first paragraph, we can know that ________.
A.people think of time as a sign of culture

D.time is either a planned object or a machine

【3】Which example best describes a present-oriented culture?
A.Making a plan for tomorrow's work.

23、Online classes
Taking online classes is becoming increasingly popular, but students have different opinions about it.
Wang Qi, 14: I love taking online courses. They give me a lot more choices and freedom. We can choose to learn whatever we want. Also, online classes enable us to study whenever and wherever we want, which is very convenient. |
Wu Jun, 13: I don’t think taking online classes is a good way to study. There are many temptations (诱惑) on the Internet. Students can be distracted (使分心) from their courses easily. The whole learning process is not as organized as it is in the classroom. |
Zhou Siya, 13: Online classrooms are beneficial (有益的). We might feel more focused on learning when we are alone in front of a computer with no one to distract us. In addition, taking courses online also means we can have more time to use a computer, which is a good way to practice our computer skills. |
Li Chunjie, 14: I think the idea of taking online courses is crazy. 24、A blind boy sat there with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said, “I am blind, please help.”
There were only a few coins in the hat. A man was walking by. He took out a few coins and dropped them into the hat. He then turned the sign around and wrote something on it. He put the sign back and walked away.
Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized his footsteps and ask, “Are you the one who changed my sign in the morning? What did you do?”
The man said, “I only wrote the truth in a different way.”
What he had written was, “Today is a beautiful day, but I can’t see it.”
Of course both signs told people the boy was blind. But the first sign simply told people to help by putting some money in the hat. The second one told people that they were able to enjoy the beauty of the day, but the boy could not enjoy it because he was blind.
The first sign simply said the boy was blind, while the second one told people they were so lucky that they were not blind.
There are at least two lessons we can learn from this simple story.
Treasure (珍惜) what you have. Someone else has less. Try your best to help those who need your help.
Be creative. Think differently. There is always a better way.

【3】According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?

Newspapers have been an important part of everyday life since the 18th century. Many countries have hundreds of different newspapers. There is an old Chinese saying: “A scholar need not leave his home to know what’s going on in the world.” Reading newspapers is, in my opinion, a must for a modern person. But how do newspaper e【1】 decide which news stories to print? Why do they print some stories and not others? What makes a good newspaper story?
Firstly, it is important to report news stories. TV stations can report news much f【2】 than newspapers. However, newspapers give more about the same story. They may also look at the story in another way, or they may print c【3】 different stories from those on TV.
Secondly, a news story has to be interesting and unusual. People don’t want to read stories about everyday life. As a result, many stories are about some kind of danger and s【4】 to be “bad” news. For example, newspapers never print stories about planes landing safely; instead they print stories about plane accidents.
Another factor (因素) is also very important in many news stories. Many people are interested in news in foreign countries, but more people p【5】 to read stories about people, places and events in their own country. So the stories on the f【6】 page in Chinese newspapers are usually very different from the ones in British, French and American newspapers.
Today, with so many newspapers and so many television and Internet sites, people can get their news quickly. Many newspapers have lost so many r【7】, so they have been forced to close.
