“Calm down?! What if your son was in this room right now? Would you calm down? If your own son dies while waiting for a doctor, then what will you do?” said the father angrily. The doctor smiled again and replied, “We will do our best and you should also pray for your son’s healthy life.”

22、 For many animals, the sea is a dangerous place. Overfishing and pollution are killing many sea animals. But the number of cephalopods (头足类动物) – sea animals that include octopi (章鱼) and squid (鱿鱼) – has been growing for the past 60 years.
Zoe Doubleday is a scientist and she did a study of cephalopods. She says cephalopods’ special abilities made their numbers to grow.
① These animals can change their colour and body shape. They grow fast and live for only one or two years. “This allows them to get used to changing environments more quickly than other sea animals,” Doubleday said.
② What’s more, rising sea temperatures might make animals age faster, she says. They might be growing faster and giving birth to more babies.
③ So people can find them in both cold and hot places. Because they can easily get used to their environment, they are known as the “wild grass of the sea”.
④ Will octopi and squid take over the world one day? According to Doubleday, that won’t happen. The growth of cephalopods could slow down if the animals run out of food and start eating each other. Overfishing could also change their numbers.
For now, the cephalopod growth is good news for other sea animals. “The growing number of cephalopods could be good for sea animals and birds that eat cephalopods,” Doubleday said.

23、Gao Defu, 10, is a student in a primary school in a small village in Guizhou. He used to go hungry or have only an ear of corn for lunch at noon. But now, Gao and his classmates have better food and vegetable dishes for free every day, thanks to the free lunch program.
The program was started by Deng Fei, a journalist at the Phoenix Weekly (《凤凰周刊》). Early this year, Deng met Xiao Yu, a primary school teacher from Guizhou, and was told that students in Xiao’s school didn’t have lunch to eat. Instead, they drank water to lessen their hunger.
Deeply shocked, Deng decided to do something for kids in the poor areas. He posted a message on his microblog (微博) saying he wanted to build a canteen (食堂) at Xiao’s school. In March, some 500 reporters, along with a dozen news organizations and charity funds (慈善基金), finally set up the free lunch program.

24、
During all this time I never stopped thinking about escape. When I traveled across to the other side of the island, I could see the other islands, and I said to myself, “PerhapsI can get there with a boat. Perhaps I can get back to England one day.”
So I decided to make myself a boat. I cut down a big tree, and then began to make a long hole in it. It was hard work, but about six months later, I
had a very fine canoe (独木舟). Next, I had to get it down to the sea. How silly I was! Why didn’t I think about it before I began work? Of course, the canoe was too heavy. I couldn’t move it! I pulled and pushed and tried everything, but it didn’t move. I was very unhappy for a long time after that.
That happened in my fourth year on the island. In my sixth year I did make myself a smaller canoe, but I did not try to escape in it. The boat was too small for a long journey, and I did not want to die at sea. The island was my home now, not my prison, and I was just happy to be alive. A year or two later, I made myself a second canoe on the other side of the island. I also built myself a second house there, and so I had two homes.
My life was still busy from morning to night. There were always things to do or to make. I learnt to make new clothes for myself from the skins of dead animals. They looked very strange, it is true, but they kept me dry in the rain.
I kept food and tools at both my houses, and also wild goats (山羊). There were many goats on the island, and I made fields with high fences to keep them in. They learnt to take food from me, and soon I had goats’ milk to drink every day. I also worked hard in my corn (玉米) fields. And so many years went by.
