六、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Sign language is a kind of body language. Body language includes eye contact, walking postures, standing postures and gestures. Body language can express all kinds of thoughts and feelings. Different cultures have different body language. Here are some common gestures in different cultures.

In China, a thumb-up sign is used to praise someone for being “good”, “great” and “smart”. In America, a thumb-up sign means “It’s good” or “It’s OK” while a thumb-down sign means the opposite (相反的). But in some countries, there are other meanings. For example, in Japan, that also means “man”, “your father” and “the highest”. In South Korea, it also means “the chief”, “one’s own father”, “minister” and “captain”. In Australia, the United States, Mexico and other countries, it means “the fate of prayer (祈祷的命运)”. As for French people and Indians, this gesture can be used when asking for a ride.

Point with your forefinger (食指). It is very impolite in Europe and America. British and American people make a circle with the thumb and forefinger and the other three fingers keep straight, which means “Excellent”.

Put out your forefinger. In the United States, it’s used to ask someone to wait; French people ask for an answer by using this gesture; In Myanmar, it means “please”; In Singapore, it shows something or someone is the most important.

Hold out your forefinger and middle finger and make the V word. “V” is the first letter of victory (胜利), so it means “victory” in Britain, France and other countries. But in Serbia, the gesture stands for “heroism” and in the Netherlands, it stands for “freedom”.

Besides, the “OK” sign means “money” in Japan while it means bad behavior in Latin America.

【1】What does the underlined word “that” refer to?

    A.The thumb-down sign.

    B.The thumb-up sign.

    C.The hand-up sign.

    D.The hand-down sign.

B.People will be unhappy if you point with your forefinger in America.

C.People in Singapore usually put out their forefingers to show “please”.

D.The “OK” sign in Latin America has a different meaning from Japan.

    A.①② / ③④⑤⑥

  • 23、The next time you are out walking your dog, be sure to keep your eyes on the ground. Maybe you can find some treasures. That is exactly what happened to a California couple who recently happened to find the most valuable ancient gold in North America.

John and Mary, a couple, lived in Northern California’s Gold Country. One day they were walking their dog along the road as usual. However, this time around, John noticed a rusty bottle sticking out(凸出) from the ground. They decided to take a closer look, and then they unearthed it with a stick and took it home.

The can(罐) was very heavy, making the couple guess that it was filled with paint(油漆). However, when John opened it and saw the side of a shiny coin, he knew he had found gold!

The couple immediately returned to the area with a small shovel to see if there were any more bottles to be found. Sure enough, they found one more. This one had broken and scattered(散开) all its treasures into the ground below. And that was not all—over the next few days the couple found six more in the area.

According to the dates of the coins, as well as, the condition of the metal cans, experts believe that the gold was buried(埋) sometime in the late 19th century, right after the California’s Gold Rush. John thought that the can that was sticking out, was a mark for whoever buried the treasure there—For reasons that nobody will ever know, he/she never returned to get it back.

  • 24、   Healthy eating doesn’t just mean what you eat, but how you eat. Here is some advice on healthy eating.

Eat with others. It can help you to know others’ healthy eating habits. If you usually eat with your parents, you will find that the food you eat is more delicious. Listen to your body. Ask yourself if you are really hungry. Have a glass of water to see if you are thirsty—sometimes you are just thirsty, you need no food. Stop eating before you feel full.

Eat breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Since you don’t eat for the past ten hours of sleeping, your body needs food to get energy. You will be smarter after eating breakfast.

Eat healthy snacks like fruits or cheese. We all need snacks sometimes. In fact, it’s a good idea to eat two healthy snacks between your three meals. This doesn’t mean that you can eat a bag of chips instead of a meal.

Don’t eat dinner late. Because of the busy life, we always put off eating dinner until the last minute. Try to eat dinner at least 3 hours before you go to bed. This will give your body a chance to digest most of the food before you rest for the next 8 to 10 hours.
