21、Micro-Enterprise Credit for Street Youth
Introduction
Although small-scale business training and credit programs have become more common throughout the world, relatively little attention has been paid to the need to direct such opportunities to youth living on the street or in difficult circumstances. Over the past years, Street Kids International (S.K.I.) has been working with partner organizations in Africa, Latin America and India to support the economic lives of street children. The purpose of this paper is to share some of the lessons S.K. I. and our partner organizations have learned.
Background
Typically, children end up on the streets not due to a single cause, but a combination of factors: the lack of adequately funded schools, the demand for income at home and so on. The street may be attractive to children as a place to find adventurous play and money. However, it is also a place where some children are exposed, with little or no protection, to exploitative employment, and urban crime.
Street Business Partnerships
S.K.I. has worked with partner organizations in Latin America, Africa and India to develop innovative opportunities for street children to earn income.
● The S.K.I Bicycle Courier Service first started in the Sudan. Participants in this enterprise were supplied with bicycles, which they used to deliver parcels and messages, but they were required to pay for it gradually from their wages.
● The Youth Skills Enterprise Initiative in Zambia is a joint program with the Red Cross Society. Street Youths are supported to start their own small business through business training, life skills training and access to credit.
Lessons Learned
The following lessons have emerged from the programs that S.K.I. and partner organizations have created.
● It’s important for all loans to be linked to training programs that include the development of basic business and life skills.
● Small loans are provided initially for purchasing fixed assets such as bicycles, shoe shining kits.
● All S.K.I. programs have charged interest on the loans, primarily to get the business runners used to the concept of paying interest on borrowing money. Generally the rates have been modest.
Conclusion
There is a need to recognize the importance of access to credit for poor young people seeking to fulfill economic needs.

22、In an apartment, people are having a party. They’re smiling and chatting with each other; they’re drinking cocktails and enjoying snacks. But the mood lighting is a bit strange. No candles or twinkling Christmas lights here. Instead, the light comes from enormous green-glowing plants in the center of the table.
This is a model inside a museum in New York. The “people” are small silver statues. But the plants are real. They’re watercress planted with nanoparticles (纳米粒) that turn their stored energy into light. It’s a technology developed several years ago by MIT chemical engineer Michael Strano. Now, Strano has partnered with an architect, Sheila Kennedy, to explore how these plants might be a central part of our homes and sustainable energy future.
The plants in the exhibit are newer versions. Their glow is based on an enzyme (酶) called luciferase, which is what gives fireflies their light. Strano and his colleagues first put luciferase and two molecules (分子) that allow it to work inside a nanoparticle carrier. They then immersed plants in a liquid containing the particles, and added high pressure. The pressure pushed the particles into the leaves through tiny pores (气孔).
“For the last two decades, plants have been a part of architecture, but they’ve always been used as green walls or roofs,” Kennedy says. However, the plants in Kennedy’s models fill entire rooms, their leaves and stems going wherever they choose. For her, this project was an interesting design challenge. She and her team had to figure out how to bring in sufficient water and where to contain enormous amounts of soil.
The team is currently working on making the plants brighter and fixing light particles in larger plants such as trees. They’re also eager to extend the duration of a plant’s light from hours to days or weeks.

24、McDonald's vegan (严格素食的) McPlant burger is now available in all branches across the UK and Ireland, the fast food giant has announced. The nationwide launch of the new menu item comes after a successful trial in 250 McDonald's restaurants last year.
The McPlant, which took more than three years to develop, features a burger developed by Beyond Meat and a vegan cheese slice based on pea protein, as well as vegan sauce, vegan bun, mustard, ketchup, onions, pickles, lettuce and tomatoes. It comes as a number of fast food restaurant chains roll out vegan offerings as part of Veganuary, a 31-day challenge that encourages people to cat only plant-based foods throughout the month of January. Burger King has launched vegan nuggets (鸡块), while KFC announced that its vegan chicken burger is making a permanent return to its menu.
We tested the McPlant burger when it was released in October last year, and determined that the vegan burger had the "unmistakable Maccy D flavours". One of our testers said: "Having not eaten a meat McDonald's burger for over 20 years, I am thrilled to be able to enjoy a burger instead of having to settle for French fries as a vegetarian."
