二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   On a freezing December morning Matthew Warwick, then a 20-year-old college student, climbed on the edge of Waterloo Bridge in London. That morning, Matthew escaped from a mental health hospital, where he’d been diagnosed with schizo-affective disorder. He headed straight to the bridge, convinced that his disease was a life sentence.

Hundreds of people passed by. Only one man called Alex Owen, then 25, calmly and quietly walked to Matthew’s side.

“You’re alright, man? Why are you sitting on a bridge?”

At first Matthew wanted Alex to leave him alone, but something in Alex’s calm, down-to-earth manner struck a chord. Matthew felt faith, like he could talk to him.

“It’s cold here. Why not have some coffee in a warm cafe? Everything will be OK.” For the first time after the diagnosis Matthew felt perhaps it really might. He climbed back.

The police, having received calls from passers-by, were waiting there. They quickly put him into a police car, in case he was to panic and jump. He lost sight of Alex, the person who’d brought him hope.

Matthew ended up back in hospital. Eventually, he was well enough to return to university and finish his degree. Over the next six years, Matthew often thought about the stranger who had talked him round. Eager to thank him in person, he posted a Facebook message nicknaming the good man Mike. His #Find Mike post was shared millions of times around the world, as far as Canada.

Matthew was overexcited when Alex called him two weeks after his post. They had a reunion, finally having that coffee they had first planned all those years ago.

“Many people walked past, but because of Alex’s kindness and sympathy, I’ve lived a good life.” Matthew said.

1Why did Matthew climb up the bridge?

A.He was badly treated in the hospital. B.His disease made him lose hope.

C.He wanted to draw people’s attention. D.He studied poorly in the college.

2What does the underlined phrase “struck a chord” in Paragraph 4 mean?

A.Touched his heart. B.Drew his attention.

C.Aroused his interest. D.Blew his mind.

3Which of the following best describes Alex?

    A.Diligent. B.Strong-willed.

    C.Caring. D.Generous.

    4How did Matthew find Alex?

A.By visiting homes door-to-door. B.By calling their friends.

C.By asking the police. D.By posting a message online.

  • 22、By the middle of the second day I know I'm in trouble. In front of me the land stretches up and away towards a distant hill, and into the space, between that hill and me, is crowded one of the most vivid concentrations of color I have ever seen. It starts with the trees. The wet season is the only a few weeks off and almost as if they can smell the coming rains, they have put out their leaves. They are no ordinary green and the dry grasses beneath them are shining with golds, browns, and reds. I want to recreate this scene with watercolors. Although I can make a try at it with words, trying to paint it in my sketch book is another matter altogether. I've already made one attempt: a series of lines in orange and red, with bluish trees placed across them, which now lies face down in the grass beside me.

I've put it there because the last thing I want right now is for someone else to come along and look at it. A young man called Royale walks up the hill. Royale is a sculptor, and, with several other local men, produces pieces of work in the local stone. Recently, and quite suddenly, this work, and that of several other local co-operatives, has acquired an international reputation. I certainly don't want a man capable of such things looking at my own awful painting. So I put my foot, as casually as I can, on the finished one beside me and we resume the conversation started earlier in the day.

I want to talk to Royale about his life here. He, however, is only interested in what I am up to. To begin with, it seems that he considers me a fellow artist, and for a moment I find myself staring into the depths of embarrassment. But when he asks me, "what is painting like?" I realize that this professional artist has never painted anything in his life before. He just wants to go with my colors.

When I signed up for this holiday, I was hoping for an experience like the one I had had four years earlier in Wales. That was my first painting holiday, and I love it. Two things made it great. First was the teacher, a man called Robin, who showed me that what is important about drawing and painting is not the finished article but the process of completing it. The second element of that week was the place. I grew up in places like that, and I connected with it immediately. But it was stupid of me to think that I could reproduce the experience down here, deep in the Southern Hemisphere. Zimbabwe is not a part of me, nor I of it. Trying to draw it for the first time, from a standing start, is like trying to start a conversation in Swahili.

【1】What problem does the writer have at the beginning of her holiday?

A.The weather is not good enough for painting.

B.She's brought the wrong materials with her.

C.There are no animals that she can paint.

D.She can't reproduce the exact color.

【2】The writer hid her work because ________.

A.she thought it would disappoint Royale.

    B.she believed Royale painted better

C.it wasn't good enough to sell

D.it was only a quick sketch

【3】What does the writer mean by "what I am up to" in paragraph 3?

    A.What I might do.

    B.What I am painting.

    C.What I will give him.

    D.What I can teach him.

【4】What does the writer say about her previous painting holiday?

A.The landscape was more familiar to her.

B.Her technique had improved much faster.

C.She preferred the teacher she had had then.

D.She had been able to complete a number of paintings.

  • 23、   The literary review is a part of a larger research paper. Its purpose is to resolve conflicts, and point the way for further research. Here is how you can write a good review.

Clarify your professor’s requirements. Some instructors may ask you to do a literature review but not give more specific than that. How many sources should you include? 1 Knowing precisely what your professor is looking for is the first step to getting A.

Start with a suitable introduction. As with everything, first impressions matter. 2 If you are employing a statement, place it toward the end of your introductory paragraph.

Organize the body. 3 Since they’re all on the same topic, they probably have loads in common. So choosing the way for your specific focus is necessary. For example, arranging the sources by the trends may be the most obvious structure.

Come to a clear conclusion. 4 The closing paragraph needs to repeat what was said in the introduction. You can discuss what you’ve drawn so far from your studies.

5 You are not presenting information that sprang up from the wonders of your own mind, but you should still start and end each paragraph with your own words. Your voice should remain front and center.

    A.Find a focus.

    B.Keep your own voice.

C.Do you see trends being revealed?

D.Is there a page or word requirement?

E.You may also make your conclusion suggestive.

F.The body is the part where you have the most options.

G.Your introduction should give a quick idea of the topic of your review.

  • 24、The first essay I wrote for my history of English class was perfect, at least from my perspective. I had worked on it constantly and couldn’t wait to get my grade back. I handed it in with pride.

Two weeks later, I received my grade: a D. The pages were covered in red writing, pointing out errors. There must have been a mistake.

University started later for me than most. The opportunity wasn’t available when I was younger—too many kids in our family and too little money. But I never stopped wondering what university would have been like. I was in my 40s when I sent in my application and as a part-time student, I will be in my 60s before I’m finished. That’s my goal.

What’s it like to be the old guy in a class full of 20-year-olds? It’s strange. They pretty much ignored me, and I ignored them. They also ignored each other. However, after we had more group work together, people started to communicate. Although I was an English major, some of my favorite classes were unrelated electives. Courses in art history and Greek and Roman history were fascinating. I was eager to do well.

I arranged a meeting to discuss my essay grade and arrived 10 minutes early to meet the teacher’s assistant I was ready to argue for the brilliance of my paper. However, she quickly explained to me that the paper failed to make a strong argument. The mark remained.

I kept studying and kept leaning, I learned to love two dozen writers I had never heard of before and explored types of literature I had never examined. Eventually, I learned how to write an essay in proper academic prose.

University is different when you are a senior, part-time student. If you are there to establish a career or because your parents forced you to go, there are other pressures. For me, it’s just learning. Whether I’m learning remotely or in person, it makes the world a bigger, richer place.

【1】Why did the writer start university later than others?

    A.His application was refused.

    B.His teacher disliked his essay.

C.His family was not rich enough.

D.His health did not meet the standard.

【2】How did the writer feel after receiving the grade of his first essay?

    A.Surprised.

    B.Pleased

    C.Excited.

    D.Hopeless

【3】What helped the writer in writing a proper academic essay?

    A.Strong curiosity.

    B.Constant efforts.

    C.Great pressure.

    D.Remarkable creativity.

【4】Which would be the best title for the passage?

    A.Practice Makes Perfect

B.Not All That Shines Is Gold

C.Where There Is A Will, There Is A Way

    D.Action Speaks Louder Than Words
