二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、International teams have spent nearly half a year looking for evidence of the missing Malaysian Airlines plane, a search that includes the hunt for the aircraft’s so-called black box, which holds flight data that would likely explain what caused MH370 to move away from its course. But many aviation experts wonder why, in our increasingly networked world, divers are searching the Indian Ocean for a metal box when technology already exists that would enable planes to stream black box data to the ground in the event of an emergency.

Black boxes have been on planes since the late 1950s, and now every commercial aircraft has two: a flight data recorder and a voice recorder. (Although they are referred to as black boxes, they are typically orange in color, making them easier to spot in waters.) Black box recorders are mainly used to investigate the cause of in-flight accidents.

While black boxes are built to survive a crash and long-term submersion(浸没)in water, it can be a real challenge to find the device if a plane has gone down in the ocean. While each box contains a beacon(无线电信标台), the unit only has enough battery power to transmit a signal for 30 days. After the crash of Air France Flight 447 in the Atlantic Ocean in June 2009, it took divers two years to find the black box.

Pierre Jeanniot, a Canadian engineer who helped perfect black box technology about 40 years ago, feels that the device, in its current form, is obsolete. He started to question its effectiveness more than a decade ago, after seeing the broken pieces of the black boxes in the 2001 attacks on the World Trade towers in New York. Jeanniot is now on the advisory board of a Toronto-based firm that has built a live-streamed black box system. When a plane experiences an irregular event, the system can send streaming data off the aircraft to one of the satellites and then down to ground-based servers, where the message is interpreted and sent to the airline. It seems necessary that the loss of MH370 and other similar cases wake more people up to the fact that the tools being used at this stage are inadequate for dealing with emergency situations, Jeanniot says. He also estimates that if this technology had been on board the missing Malaysian Airlines flight and live-streaming for the estimated seven hours after the flight first experienced a problem, it would have cost about $3,000.

While there is widespread approval of a live-streamed black box system, most airlines see its cost prohibitive. The airline industry is an industry with small profits, and is reluctant to add costs that will further cut the bottom line.

However, given how much time, money and effort has been spent on the luckless search for MH370, s black box, the cost of operating a live-streaming version seems like a trifle(区区小数)

1In this passage, the underlined word obsolete probably means .

    A. out of date B. out of use

    C. on the move D. on the increase

2Which fact is mentioned to support aviation experts’ doubt about the effectiveness of the black box?

    A. MH370’s black box holds flight data that might explain what happened to the aircraft.

    B. The recorders are actually orange in color though referred to as black boxes.

    C. The beacon in the black box has limited battery power to send out a signal for 30 days.

    D. It’s necessary for people to wake up to the weaknesses of the black box

3What’s airlines’ attitude towards the live-streamed black box system?

    A. They approve of the system since it may save time, money and effort.

    B. They consider using the system as the bottom line of costs.

    C. They are reluctant to start the system because it still needs improving.

    D. They are unwilling to equip planes with the system as it cuts their profits.

4From the passage, we can learn that__________.

    A. it takes divers one or two years to find the black box after a crash

    B. the new system does not live stream black box data for the whole flight

    C. Jeanniot changed his view on black box technology when working for a Canadian firm

    D. operating a live-streamed black box system costs only three thousand dollars

  • 22、Facebook announced today that it exceeded ( 超越) one of its biggest environmental goals: it managed to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 94 percent in 2020. It had previously promised to cut planet-heating emissions by 75 percent. The company said that it had also achieved its goal of “net zero emissions”.

Facebook also announced that it had achieved another goal: it now purchases enough renewable energy to cover 100 percent of its global operations, which includes its offices and data centers. But that doesn’t mean that all of its operations are actually powered by renewables like solar and wind energy—at least not yet.

Renewable energy is on the rise, but most electricity grids (电网) still rely on fossil fuels. When companies can’t purchase enough renewable energy from utilities because there isn’t enough supply, they buy renewable energy certificates that signal that the company invested in renewable energy projects somewhere. Those projects can be located anywhere, and certificates have been sold for so cheap that experts say they don’t really lead to more renewable energy production. Facebook also relies on renewable energy certificates, but it focuses on signing long-term contracts to support the construction of new solar and wind developments in the same places where it operates. I’s invested in 63 new renewable energy projects located on the same electrical grids as its data centers.

Facebook has recently also tried to limit misinformation about climate change on its platform. Last year, it launched a “Climate Science Information Center” in some countries. In the UK this year, it started adding a label to some posts about climate change that redirect people to its information center. It all comes on the heels of criticism from activists and policymakers over how misinformation about climate change festered on the site, including one famous case of Facebook reversing(撤销) a “false” rating that its fact -checkers gave based on inaccurate information.

【1】W hat achievement did Facebook gain recently?

A.It totally used solar and wind energy for its operations.

B.It cut down its climate pollution more than planned.

C.It reached its goal of zero greenhouse gas emissions.

D.It invested a new renewable energy project.

【2】How do the experts respond to the renewable energy certificate?

A.They pay little attention to it.

B.They have become bored with it.

C.They think it is a waste of money.

D.They think it brings little actual benefit.

【3】Which can best take the place of the underlined word “festered” in paragraph 4?

    A.Recognized.

    B.Exchanged.

    C.Worsened.

    D.Decreased.

【4】Which of the following can be a best title for the text?

A.Facebook hit several key climate goals

B.Take action to prevent climate change

    C.Renewable energy is mankind’s hope

D.Say no to greenhouse gas emissions

  • 23、   We may be living in the digital age, but reading books is still a big part of growing up. When they’re in primary school, children read books that really challenge them. But once they reach secondary school, the level of difficulty doesn’t change much. Secondary school students tend to read books which are also read by upper primary students. They are not challenging themselves enough.

To discover these trends, I analyzed data collected by Accelerated Reader (AR) software, which asks pupils to check their understanding of the books they’ve chosen to read. The difficulty — which I call “readability”.

I also created two lists of books: one for the books that most secondary pupils had chosen to read, and another for the books they had voted as their favorites. According to the readability, these students’ favorite books tend to be much more advanced than the other books they chose, but they could still understand them. The rest of the books most often chosen by them are quite simple.

You might think that students who read harder books might make more mistakes and understand them less well. But students’ quality of comprehension does not depend on the difficulty of the book, no matter what year of secondary school they’re in. Having an interest is the most obvious factor here — if you like the book, you try hard to really understand it.

As children become teenagers, they listen less to advice from adults and more to advice from kids of their age. So, rather than trying to lecture young people on the benefits of Jane Austen, we should make the nature of the problem clear to them. Students should challenge each other to read more difficult books. Adults could help by setting up noticeboards or organizing social media networks for young people to share their recommendations. And teachers can lend a hand by setting aside time for reading in school. Young people will realize the problems that come when they don’t challenge themselves to read difficult books.

1What can we learn from the first paragraph?

A.Children spend little time on after-class reading

B.Secondary school students seldom read tough books

C.Children’s reading interest tends to decrease as they grow up

D.Primary students have difficulty choosing good reading materials

2The author made use of AR software to ________.

    A.understand children’s different reading styles

B.show the average time children spend on reading

C.find out the causes of children’s reading difficulties

D.make clear the difficulty levels of books read by children

3What can we infer about secondary school students from the readability scores?

A.They find some advanced books interesting

B.They often make mistakes during advanced reading

C.They prefer to read books recommended by their parents

D.They can hardly improve their scores on reading comprehension

4According to Paragraph 4, what is vital for improving reading comprehension?

    A.Basic knowledge

    B.Reading skills

    C.Motivation

    D.Instruction

5What does the author want to express in the last paragraph?

A.Designing relatively difficult textbooks is necessary

B.Improving students’ reading is a shared responsibility

C.Advanced technology should be used in reading reaching

D.Students should be encouraged to read more literary works

  • 24、Allergies(过敏)cause loads of trouble. Some people suffer from seasonal hay fever as pollen(花粉)flows through the air. Others react to materials at their very touch. And some sorry souls go into shock at the mere presence of certain foods, particularly peanuts and shellfish.

The cause in each case is an oversensitive immune system. This creates annoying and sometimes life-threatening symptoms. Over-reactive immune systems may not, though, be an entirely bad thing. Another role played by the immune system is to destroy malignant tumors(恶性肿瘤)before they take hold—work carried out recently by Annette Wigertz of the Karolinska Institute, in Stockholm, and her colleague suggests that the immune systems of those with allergies may be particularly good at this.

This finding came after Doctor Wigertz and her team interviewed 1, 527 people with gliomas(a type of brain tumor)in Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden and the southeast of England. The researchers asked the patients in question whether they had a history of allergies, and then compared the results with those for 3, 309 otherwise similar individuals who did not have brain tumors. As Doctor Wigertz reports in the American Journal of Epidemiology, the tumor-free were more likely to suffer from allergies. The presence of an allergy was associated with a 30% reduction in the likelihood of having a glioma.

This was not all that surprising. Previous research had detected similar correlations, suggesting that a welcome side effect of allergy was resistance to cancer. But this new study went further. It looked carefully at the time in the patients' lives when their allergies were active, and it found that this timing was crucial. Doctor Wigertz noted that the absence of allergy was correlated with the time when the glioma first formed.

Awkwardly, this result is open to two rather different interpretations. The optimistic explanation is that the hyperactive immune system associated with allergy does protect against tumors. The other interpretation is that tumors are doing something as they grow that stops the immune system and thus allergic reactions. Either way, tumor and lack of allergy coincide. And either way, something interesting is going on.

    【1】What accounts for most allergies?

    A.Pollen in-the air.

    B.Presence of some food.

    C.Sensitivity of the immune system.

    D.Overreacting to the world.

【2】How is this finding different from those from the previous research?

A.It indicates a benefit of allergy.

B.It uncovers the cause of allergies.

C.It proves the correlations between allergy and cancers.

D.It discovers the cancer started when there was no allergy.

    【3】What's the last paragraph about?

A.What explains the finding of the research.

B.Why the research on allergy is of significance.

C.Whether cancer is related to the absence of allergy.

D.How allergy protects people against cancers.

【4】What can we learn from the research findings?

    A.Bad news has wings.

B.When we win some, we lose some.

    C.Robbing Peter to pay Paul.

    D.One man's meat, another man's poison.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、His father said, “All set, boy?” and Jeremy nodded, picking up his gun with awkward gloved hands. His father pushed open the door and they went out into the freezing dawn together. Ordinarily Jeremy would take out his camera to record the scenery, but not this morning. This was the morning, particularly sacred, when 14-year-old Jeremy would go duck hunting for the first time.

However, he hated it, and had hated the whole idea since his father bought him a gun. But he was determined to go through with it. He loved his father, and wanted his approval more than anything in the world.

They came to a narrow and hidden place facing the bay. Jeremy sat down nervously and waited. To reduce fear, he took a picture of his father against the clean water. Then he put the camera hurriedly on the grass and picked up his gun.

Jeremy got his gun ready. “I'll let you shoot first,” his father said, loading his own gun. “You know, I've been waiting for a long time for this day. Just the two of us..."He broke off, bending forward, eyes narrowed. “There's a small flight heading this way now. Keep your head down. I'll give you the word.”

The sun came out. Jeremy could see everything clearly: his father's face, tense and eager; the white frost on the gun. His heart was beating wildly. He prayed, “Don't let them come, please!”

But they kept coming. "Four black,” his father said. “One mallard.” High above, Jeremy heard the pulsing whistle of wings as the flight began to circle. The mallard was leading, his feet dropping down, reaching for the silver-colored water. Closer, closer... “Get set,” his father whispered.

“Now!” cried Jeremy's father. “Take them!”

Jeremy felt his body obey. He stood up, holding the gun. In the same instant, the wild ducks saw the gunners and flew. “Shoot!” said something sharply in Jeremy's brain. But up went the mallard higher still, until suddenly he caught the full force of the wind and flew away, out of range.
