21、He met her at a party. She was outstanding; many guys were after her, but nobody paid any attention to him. After the party, he invited her for coffee. She was surprised, so as not to appear rude, she went along.
As they sat in a nice coffee shop, he was too nervous to say anything and she felt uncomfortable. Suddenly, he asked the waiter, “Could you please give me some salt? I'd like to put it in my coffee.”
They stared at him. He turned red, but when the salt came, he put it in his coffee and drank. Curious, she asked, "Why salt with coffee?" He explained, “When I was a little boy, I lived near the sea. I liked playing on the sea. I could feel it salty, like salty coffee. Now every time I drink it, I think of my childhood and my hometown. I miss it and my parents, who are still there.”
She was deeply moved. A man who can admit that he's homesick must love his home and care about his family. He must be responsible. She talked too, about her faraway hometown, her childhood, her family. That was the start to their love story.
They continued to date. She found that he met all her requirements. He was tolerant, kind, warm and careful. And to think she would have missed the catch if not for the salty coffee! So they married and lived happily together. And every time she made coffee for him, she put in some salt, the way he liked it.
After 40 years, he passed away and left her a letter which said:
My dearest, please forgive my life-long lie. Remember the first time we dated? I was so nervous that I asked for salt instead of sugar. It was hard for me to ask for a change, so I just went ahead. I never thought that we would hit it off. Many times, I tried to tell you the truth, but I was afraid that it would ruin everything.
Sweetheart, I don't exactly like salty coffee. But as it mattered so much to you, I've learnt to enjoy it. Having you with me was my greatest happiness. If I could live a second time, I hope we can be together again, even if it means that I have to drink salty coffee for the rest of my life.
Her tears made the letter totally wet. Someday, someone asked her, “What’s the taste of salty coffee?” “It’s sweet,” she replied.
【1】What does the writer mean by saying “she would have missed the catch”?
A. She meant to leave him on their first date.

22、 Many of us spend part of each day surrounded by strangers, whether on our daily commute(上下班往返), or sitting in park or cafe. But most of them remain just that-strangers. However, new evidence has shown that plucking up(鼓起) the courage to strike up conversation might be good for our health.
Nicholas Epley from the University of Chicago and Juliana Schroeder from the University of California are behavioral(行为的) scientists. They wanted to know whether solitude is a more positive experience than interacting with strangers, or if people misunderstand the consequences of distant social connections. They found that many people feel uncomfortable and frightened talking to others and their research suggested that when we make an initial conversation “we consistently underestimate(低估) how much a new person likes us.” It seems we think that all the things could go wrong and why someone wouldn't want to talk with us.
Their research involved an experiment with a group of Chicago commuters and found that"every participant in our experiment who actually tried to talk to a stranger found the person sitting next to them was happy to chat."From this and other research, the conclusion is that connecting with strangers is surprisingly pleasant and it has a positive impact on our well-being.It's true that talking can make you feel happier and happiness can lead to better mental health.
However, if you're an introvert(性格内向者),the thought of speaking to someone new might make you anxious. But the American research found “both extroverts(性格外向者) and introverts are happier when they are asked to behave in an extroverted manner.” So maybe, if you're a loner, it’s time to come out of your shell and make some small talk with a stranger-it could be the beginning of a new friendship.
【1】What does the underlined word “solitude” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Being calm. B.Being pleasant. C.Being alone. D.Being healthy.
【2】Why might we not want to speak to a stranger?
A.Because we don't trust a new person.
B.Because we can't find a common topic.
C.Because we like distant social connections.
D.Because we feel the stranger may dislike us.
【3】What could help start a new friendship?
A.Making a small talk.
B.Sitting next to a stranger.
C.Sharing personal details.
D.Behaving in polite manner.
【4】Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.How to be an extrovert.

23、There are 67 counties in the state of Alabama. Each county is rich with history and its own unique stories. Colbert County, located in the northwest corner of the state, has its share of exciting stories and claims to statewide fame. The county was created on February 6, 1867, and Tuscumbia became the county seat (the town in which the offices of the county government are located).
One of the most famous residents of Tuscumbia was Helen Keller. Helen Keller was born on June 27, 1880. Her home was a white frame cottage built by her grandparents. Since ivy (常春藤) grew everywhere, the house was called Ivy Green. It was here, at the water pump in the backyard, that Keller learned the word “w-a-t-e-r” with the help of her teacher, Anne Sullivan. Visitors to Ivy Green can walk under boxwood trees that are 150 years old. The home has furniture that the Keller family used. It also has Keller’s Braille (盲文) books and her original Braille typewriter.
Spring Park is Tuscumbia’s most popular park and favorite tourist attraction. This park has the world’s largest manufactured waterfall called Coldwater Falls. The Spring Park Light and Water Show is an amazing sight to see. It takes place every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at sundown. The water appears to dance to music and colored lights. The music played during the show is recorded by singers and musicians from Alabama.
Fame Recording Studios is in the city of Muscle Shoals in Colbert County. The studio is the first successful recording studio in Alabama. It is best known for creating “Southern rock,” “Southern soul,” and “county soul.” Well-known performers like Aretha Franklin and musical groups such as Alabama and Lynyrd have made recordings at this studio.
Visitors can continue to explore music in Alabama by visiting the Alabama Music Hall of Fame in Tuscumbia. Built in 1990, this site recognizes the musical talents of more than 500 Alabama residents in a wide variety of musical styles, including country and rhythm and blues.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
Brownie and Harry were neighbor dogs in Stowe, a beautiful and peaceful town in Lamoille County, Vermont, United States, who met everyday to play together, running after each other joyfully. Like pairs of dogs you can find in most any neighborhood, these two loved each other and played together so often that they had worn a path through the grass of the field between their respective houses.
One evening, Brownie's family noticed that Brownie hadn't returned home as usual. They went looking for him with no success. Brownie still didn't show up the next day, and, despite their efforts to find him, by the next week he was still missing.
Curiously, the other dog, Harry, showed up at Brownie's house alone one day. He barked, jumped and pestered(纠缠) Brownie's human family, showing that he was filled with anxiety. Busy with their own lives, the family just ignored the nervous little neighbor dog and decided to let the missing dog go.
Harry refused to take “no” for an answer. Ted, Brownie’s owner, was steadily disturbed by the angry, determined little dog. One morning Harry followed Ted about, barking more insistently, then rushing toward a nearby empty lot and back, as if to say, “Follow me, please!I's very urgent!”
Eventually, Ted went after the mad Harry across the empty lot as Harry paused to race back and bark encouragingly. The little dog led the man under a tree, past some tree jungles, to a lonely spot a half mile from the house. There Ted found his beloved Brownie, and he was alive, with one of his front legs falling into a steel trap. At that moment, Ted understood the strange behavior of Harry.
Feeling regretful, Ted now wished he had taken Harry's earlier appeals seriously. However, Harry had done more than simply led Brownie’s human owner to his trapped friend. Ted noticed something quite remarkable before him and was shocked that the amount of love that the dog has for his partner could be so outstanding.
Paragraph 1:
In a circle around the injured dog, there were some remains of meals.
