二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Art museums are filled with centuries-old paintings with details of plants that today give us clues about evolution and breeding practices.

Exhibited at an art museum in New York City, The Harvesters created by Pieter Bruegel in 1565 shows farmers cutting wheat nearly as tall as they are. “Nowadays, if you walk through a wheat field, you basically see that wheat is about knee-height. The short wheat is essentially a consequence of breeding from the second half of the 20th century. ” said biologist Ive De Smet.

According to De Smet, wheat is just one example of how historical artwork can allow us to track the transformation of food crops over time. He teamed up with art historian David Vergauwen to seek similar kinds of artwork around the world.

Friends since childhood, their interest in plants in artwork began with a visit to a museum in Russia, where they noticed an odd-looking watermelon in an early-17th-century painting. A watermelon usually is believed to be dark red on the inside. But that one appeared to be pale and white. De Smet assumed the painter had done a poor job. But Vergauwen had a different idea. He says, “This is one of the best painters ever from that era. So, if he painted it like that, that’s the way it must have looked like. ”

Other paintings revealed that there were both red and white watermelons grown during the 17th century. The color is determined by a gene that controls the lycopene(番茄红素). “There must have been some sort of genetic change preventing the accumulation of that color. Now, with all the genetic knowledge that we have from various plant species, we can look in more details how something comes about. ”

The team hopes to create an online research database of historical plant artwork. They call for contributions of art enthusiasts around the world via the social media. But they caution, the source paintings need to be realistic. “If you’re going to use, for example, Picasso’s paintings to try and understand how a pear looked like in the early 20th century, you might be misled. ” Indeed, such an attempt could be fruitless.

【1】What can we learn about wheat from Paragraph 2?

A.It had no short variety before the 1950s.

B.It became shorter and shorter as it evolved.

C.It grew shorter as farmers’ heights changed.

D.It was about knee-height in the 17th century.

【2】What inspired the team’s interest in historical plant artwork?

    A.Their life-long friendship.

    B.A white watermelon painting.

    C.Their professional background.

D.An argument over the best painters.

【3】Why is Picasso mentioned in the last paragraph?

A.To show the contributions of art enthusiasts.

B.To give an example of historical plant artwork.

C.To tell how a pear looked in the early 20th century.

D.To stress the importance of having realistic source painting.

【4】What is mainly talked about in the text?

    A.Centuries-old paintings of plants.

B.Plants information revealed in old art.

C.The values of different works of art.

    D.Popular objects in historic artworks.

  • 22、   Be black or white, the exact color of a person’s skin is determined by a combination of his parentage and random chance and it affects how every single person treats you. You can’t take your skin off, even if you’re terrified or ashamed to wear it, even if you’re sick and tired of wearing it.

Freddie Gray, who was arrested in 2016 for possessing a legal knife and died in police custody(拘留), was born Black. Tamir Rice , who barely lived more than one being Black, was shot at the age of 12 for playing with a toy gun in 2014. Breonna Taylor, who was shot and killed in March when two plainclothes police officers entered her apartment unannounced, didn’t choose to be Black. But the police officers who shot her chose their careers. They chose to shoot her, too. Police across America also chose to shoot 336 other unarmed Black people from 2013-2019.

Each of these victims did not possess a weapon at the time of their murder, and in all but few of the cases they lost their lives because someone "thought" they were reaching for a gun that turned out to be a wallet, cell phone or nothing at all. This is absolutely unacceptable. We're not saying they shouldn't have been captured with all necessary force and imprisoned accordingly. A criminal is a criminal and should be handled as such. But even a criminal, as long as he lives in this great country, is an American worthy of justified handling and a fair trial.

Black people don’t get to sign up for lives of discrimination and terror. They often found themselves moving through wave upon wave of white faces that usually mirrored the same emotions—shock, disbelief and anger. It is the fear of black skin that plays a part in each of these murders. African Americans can no longer tolerate the unjustified killings of their loved ones. As a country, it’s time to start effective dialogues to end this pitiless trend. It has to be a long struggle and pain before Black people overcome prejudice to win the chance of being understood by white ones.

1What is the author’s purpose of mentioning the murders in Paragraph 2?

A.To provide examples of unjustified killings of Black people.

B.To give an explanation why police officers choose to shoot black people.

C.To offer a description of Police officers’ hatred towards black people.

D.To make an analysis of how hard lives black people were living.

2What is the author’s attitude towards the killings mentioned in the text

    A.Forgiving. B.Cautious.

    C.Disapproving. D.Indifferent.

3What can we infer from the text?

A.The process of overcoming prejudice towards the black is on its way.

B.Black people are ashamed to wear their skin color which leads to injustice.

C.Black people will turn to violence to stop the unjustified killings among them.

D.The police should have chosen a proper way to treat black “criminals”.

4What is the best title of the text?

    A.Prejudice from Whites

    B.Blacks Call for Justice

    C.Policemen’s Fair Trial

    D.Fight for Mutual Trust

  • 23、Smartphone Bans in School

Today's students all over the world are losing an hour a week of productivity due to their smartphone activity.

That is what two researchers from the London School of Economics are arguing with their new study that examined 130,000 students in 91 British schools that employed various smartphone-use policies. Then, they looked at how their respective students performed in 16-year-olds' national exams.

In what may not come as a surprise to some, researchers Richard Murphy and Louis-Philippe Beland found that as schools' phone policies evolved since 2001, with some choosing to completely ban smartphones, school test scores improved by an average of 6.4 percent. The increase in scores from underachieving students was even more significant as they saw their scores increase by an average of 14 percent.

“The results suggest that low-achieving students are more likely to be distracted by the presence of mobile phones, while high achievers can focus in the classroom regardless of the mobile phone policy," the researchers told CNN. "We found the effect of banning phones for these students was the same as an additional hour a week in school, or increasing the school year by five days."

Professor Murphy and Beland said their study does not mean that smartphones and other technology have no place in assisting learning.

“There are, however, potential drawbacks to new technologies," they told CNN, citing the temptation to text, play games or chat on social media. Therefore, smartphones will not be completely out of classrooms anytime soon. Smartphone ownership among young people and children has skyrocketed in the past few years. Pew Research and the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University reported that as of 2013, 78 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 owned a cellphone, 47 percent of which were smartphones.

The use of smartphones in schools is a controversial topic. Parents want to be able to reach their children while teachers complain about the effect they have on classes.

In March, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio ended a decade-long city-wide ban on smartphones in public schools and left them to make up their own rules.

But Murphy and Beland said the decision may not have a good result.

“Schools could significantly reduce the education achievement gap by prohibiting mobile phone use in schools. So by allowing phones in schools, New York may unintentionally increase the inequalities of outcomes.”

1Which of the following is TRUE about the research?

    A.It examined 130,000 underachieving students.

B.It proves that smartphones are no good for students' studies.

C.Smartphone ownership among teens aged 12 to 17 amounted to about 50 percent.

D.In schools with smartphone bans, scores of the underachieving students increased by 14%.

2Which could best replace the underlined word “distracted" in paragraph 4?

    A.Improved. B.Interested. C.Assisted. D.Affected.

3As the research suggests, as a result of smartphone use students may.

A.lose about an hour every day

B.relatively lose five days for learning

C.increase their scores by an average of 6.4 percent

D.decrease their scores by an average of 14 percent

    4What's the passage mainly about?

A.Smartphone bans in schools are beneficial.

    B.Smartphones cause students many problems.

C.Some students use smartphones too much.

D.Heavy smartphone use can harm students' learning abilities.

  • 24、From the health point of view we are living in an amazing age. We are free from many of the most dangerous diseases. A large number of once deadly illnesses can now be cured by modern medicine. It is almost certain that one day medicines will be found for the most stubborn remaining diseases. The expectation of life has increased greatly. But though the possibility of living a long and happy life is greater than ever before, every day we witness the unbelievable killing of men, women and children on the roads. Man VS the motor car! It is a never-ending battle which man is losing. Thousands of people the world over are killed or horribly killed each year and we are quietly sitting back and letting it happen.

It has been rightly said that when a man is sitting behind a steering wheel (方向盘), his car becomes the extension of his personality. There is no doubt that the motor-car often brings out a mans very worst qualities. People who are normally quiet and pleasant may become unrecognizable when they are behind a steering-wheel. They say, they are ill-mannered and aggressive, willful as two-year-olds and completely selfish. All their hidden angers and disappointments seem to be brought to the surface by the act of driving.

The surprising thing is that society smiles so gently on the motorist and seems to forgive his behavior. Everything is done for his convenience. Cities are allowed to become almost uninhabitable because of heavy traffic; towns are made ugly by huge car parks; the countryside is ruined by road networks; and the deaths become nothing more than a number every year, to be easily forgotten.

It is high time a world rule was created to reduce this senseless waste of human life. With regard to driving, the laws of some countries are unbelievably lax (不严格) and even the strictest are not strict enough. A rule which was universally accepted could only have an obviously beneficial effect on the accident rate. Here are a few examples of some of the things that might be done. The driving test should be standardized and made far more difficult than it is; all the drivers should be made to take a test every three years or so; the age at which young people are allowed to drive any vehicle should be raised to at least 21; all vehicles should be put through strict tests for safety each year. Even the smallest amount of alcohol in the blood can damage a persons driving ability. Present drinking and driving laws ( where they exist) should be made much stricter. Speed limits should be required on all roads. Governments should lay down safety specifications for car factories, as has been done in the USA. All advertising stressing power and performance should be banned. These measures may not sound good enough. But surely nothing should be considered as too severe if it results in reducing the number of deaths. After all, the world is for human beings, not motor-cars.

【1】What is the main idea of this passage?

    A. Traffic accidents are mainly caused by motorists.

    B. Thousands of people the world over are killed each year.

    C. The laws of some countries about driving are not lax.

    D. Only stricter traffic laws can prevent accidents.

【2】What does the author think of society toward motorists?

    A. Society laughs at the motorists.

    B. Huge car parks are built in the cities and towns.

    C. Victims of accidents are nothing.

    D. Society forgives their rude driving.

【3】What does the author mean by saying his car becomes the extension of his personality in  Paragraph 2?

    A. Driving can show his hidden qualities.

    B. Driving can show the other part of his personality.

    C. Driving can bring out his characters.

    D. Driving can represent his manners.

【4】Which of the followings is NOT mentioned as a way against traffic accidents?

    A. Build more highways.

    B. Stricter drivin tests.

    C. Test drivers every three years.

    D. Raise age limit and lay down safety specifications.

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Caitlyn stepped into the warm, wet sand and wiggled her toes. The white, foamy waves raced over her feet and up her legs and then pulled back again. Caitlyn loved playing in the ocean water.

“Ouch!” said the girl, as her foot stepped on something hard. She looked down. At the bottom of the ocean was a large shell. Caitlyn bent down to pick it up. It was a pretty pink conch shell with points and curves and an opening that looked like a horn. She held it up to her ear, hoping to hear the whooshing sound for which they were known. Instead, she heard something quite different.

“Hey kid! How are you doing? Want to hear a joke?”

Caitlyn nearly dropped the shell. Holding it back up to her head, she tried again.

“What’s the most musical part of a fish?” the shell asked.

    “I – I don’t know,” Caitlyn whispered.

“Their scales! Ha, ha!” laughed the shell. Caitlyn looked around to see if anyone was looking at her. They weren’t.

“I’m just getting warmed up, kid! Why don’t fish play basketball?” It seemed to be waiting for a reply.

“Uh, I’m not sure?” Caitlyn said. Was she dreaming?

The shell answered its own joke. “Because they are afraid of the net! Ha, ha!” Caitlyn had to laugh. Okay, that was sort of funny.

The girl giggled. On and on the conch shell talked with her. For the rest of the week, Caitlyn would walk into the shallow water and sit with the shell held against her ear.She smiled and chuckled as it whispered corny jokes.

On the last day of her vacation, Caitlyn decided she couldn’t leave the shell behind. “You’re coming home with me,” she said to the pretty shell. She thought it would be happy. It wasn’t. “My home is in the ocean,” it replied, without any laughter in its voice.
