  • 22、New research shows that the healthy brain may hold memories which we don’t even remember. In The Journal of Neuroscience, experts report that the brain might hold more memories than people realize, but that restoring those memories can be tricky.

    Memory Check

First, participants saw a list of 120 real words mixed with 80 nonsense words. Next, they saw another word list and tried to remember which words had been on the first list. Meanwhile, their brains were scanned with functional magnetic resonance(核磁共振) imaging.

While participants reviewed the second word list, their brain scans showed more activity in a certain brain area -- the posterior(后部的) median temporal lobe(脑叶) -- when they saw words that had been on the first word list.

But participants didn’t always remember that they’d seen those words before. Sometimes, they goofed and said they hadn’t seen those words before. In other words, the posterior median temporal lobe was more sensitive to memory than participants’ consciousness, the researchers note.

    “Album”of Memories

Another part of the median temporal lobe also attracted the scientists’ attention. The anterior(前面的)median temporal lobe showed more activity when participants thought they were seeing a new word, the study shows.

So, why did participants sometimes mess up their memory recall? It might be that two parts of their brain -- the posterior and anterior median temporal lobes -- might be dueling(决斗) for the upper hand in deciding what actually happened in the past, the study notes.

In other words, memories might have a photo album in the brain, but sometimes we forget what’s on all of the photo album’s pages.

【1】A person sometimes has difficulty recalling because .

    A. he is unconscious when he gets his memories

    B. he forgets what is on the pages of the photo album

    C. there are two parts in his brain dueling for the upper advantage

    D. the anterior median temporal lobe is more active than the posterior

【2】According to the passage the researchers are .

    A. studying how a person remembers things

    B. studying a magazine The Journal of Neuroscience

    C. examining posterior and anterior median temporal lobes

    D. doing experiments to find out what disturbs a person’s memory

【3】What did the experts discover when the participants saw the words on the first word list appear on the second word list?

    A. The instrument worked faster.

    B. The participants were more conscious.

    C. The posterior median temporal lobe was more active.

    D. The anterior median temporal lobe was more active.

【4】 The underlined word“goofed”in the fourth paragraph means .

    A. made a mess of B. made an answer for

    C. made out of   D. made the best of

  • 23、What Does Food Mean to you?

My whole relationship with food has become consumed by the after-effects of my illness and dealing with them. As a result, I’ve forgotten that there’s more to food than this. And I don’t think I’m the only one. 【1】 While it is fantastic that there are so many inspiring books that encourage healthy eating this simply can’t be the extent of our relationship with food. What about our experiences with food? Putting aside the other stuff, what does food mean to you?

When I think about my experience with food, my thoughts immediately go to my family. For me, food is family. Every evening, my dad would make it home by 6pm so that we could all sit down and have dinner together. We would share the highs and lows of our days and on a Sunday we would chat about our plans for the week. We never ate dinner in front of the television and very rarely was it ever just my brother and me. 【2】 Now, despite the fact my brother and I have long since left home, whenever we return, it’s always about the food. Our parents plan the meals, sharing new recipes and dishing out family favourites, so that ultimately the food enhances our trip and creates new memories. Food truly is family.

【3】. Children who eat regularly with their families are at a lower risk of developing poor eating habits, weight problems or substance addictions. It also gives families a chance to reflect on their days together and forges stronger bonds between parents and children.

Everyone has a different attitude to food, and it will mean different things to different people. For me, though, good quality, healthy food is important, but without the socio-familial aspect, there is something sorely lacking from my relationship with food. 【4】. So while I will continue watching what I eat (because I have to), I’ll remember this is not food’s main attraction, but only a part of what food really means to me.

A.Studies have shown the importance of eating together.

B.This is certainly not true for me, and the relationships that were built over the kitchen table with my family are very important to me.

C.The social importance of food, and eating together, should not be downplayed or replaced by a focus on purely what we are eating.

D.Many recipe books on sale have got caught up in an obsession with ‘clean eating’, dieting, watching what we eat and generally eating healthily.

E.It’s common knowledge that you are what you eat and this reflected in the ideas behind eating healthy, clean and unprocessed food.

F.Food and meal times were, and still are, the glue that brought us together and keeps us together.

  • 24、Lawn Games for Adults That’ll Make You Feel Like a Kid Again

Experts say that engaging in playful activities through adulthood can help lower stress, improve cognitive functions, and build social bonds with others, which is so much more than what your phone can do for you. So what are you waiting for? Round up the family, grab one of these lawn games for adults, and let the good time sroll.

    Spikeball Game Set $59.99

The flexible, hula-hoop-sized net stands on its foldable legs and can be taken to the beach or the park to give four players plenty of space to run around. Start the two-on-two game by bouncing a ball off the net, sending it flying toward your opponents—they have three passes between them to send the ball back over to your team. When they miss, you score, and the first one to get to 21 wins.

    The Pocket Shot $25.00

Who doesn’t love lining up cans and shooting them down with a slingshot? It’s demanding yet thrilling. The Pocket Shot is a super powerful slingshot that shoots at two or three times the rate of a regular slingshot. It’s super tiny, so it fits in your pocket.

    Giant 4-Connect-In-A-Row $79.99

Two players at a time try to insert their red or blue coins into the wooden frame to form a vertical or horizontal line of all the same color. It’s way more challenging than you’d think.

【1】According to the first paragraph, in what way can lawn games benefit adults?

    A.Ridding them of pressure.

    B.Boosting their intelligence.

    C.Stopping their phone use.

    D.Helping them gain strong build.

【2】How many players are needed when Spikeball Game Set is played?

    A.Two.

    B.Four.

    C.Five.

    D.Six.

【3】What do the second and third game have in common?

    A.They need two players.

    B.They are cheap to buy.

    C.They take skills to play.

    D.They are of pocket size.
