21、Bright Nights, Big Problems
Astronomers rate the darkness of our skies on a range of 9 (brightest) to 1 (darkest), and most of us spend our lives in the light of levels 5 to 8. All over the globe our nights are growing brighter, and almost nowhere are they growing darker. Studies increasingly link our overuse of light at night with health concerns such as sleep disorders and diseases. Other studies report the damaging ecological consequences and the big waste of energy. But the steady loss of darkness from our lives is not easily measured, for the true value of darkness is something we are barely aware of.
Since the beginning of time, a sky with stars was part of the common human experience. Everywhere on Earth, on most nights, people came face to face with the universe. This experience influenced their beliefs—their very understanding of their place in the world. Today, many of us live under skies which are polluted by light. We live under a night sky showing much fewer stars. Although our night sky continues to shape us, it is the absence of the universe around us that influences our beliefs to create. We are being shaped by a less experience of darkness, and most of us don’t even know what we are missing.
Our Milky Way galaxy is home to several hundred billion stars, and the universe home to several hundred billion other galaxies. A sky with a large number of stars encourages us to emphasize our importance, to imagine humanity as the center of all things. Face to face with the endless size of the universe, we have the chance to know how insignificant we really are. But we also realize the true largeness of our living on this planet, and realize that we have an enormous responsibility to care, that there is no other place to go, that home is here.
“Everyone needs beauty as well as bread,” wrote John Muir, American naturalist. Lighting designers understand that without darkness, there is no “city of light”, and they work constantly to create their city’s atmospheric beauty by mixing artificial light with darkness. And with night’s moonlit geographies, its smells of desert rain and autumn fires, its insect symphonies interrupted by a bird’s call on a lake, natural darkness has many offerings of its own.
Yet we are completely involved in artificial light. Much of this lighting is wholly unnecessary, born of habit and lack of awareness. So let us become aware: simply by keeping our existing lights we could significantly reduce their negative effects on our body, our mind, our soul. Artificial light at night is a wonder, a quality that enriches our lives. But the same has always been true of darkness, and can be again.

22、You've likely encountered the humblebrag before-boasting (吹嘘)disguised as a complaint, such as: "I'm having such a stressful day. I got two job offers and I don't know what to do.”
This is a typical example of humblebragging, a term coined by comedic writer Harris Wittels referring to “ a specific type of boast that allows the offender to broadcast their achievements without the necessary shame and guilt that should normally accompany such claims.” In simpler terms, it's a way to disguise a boast with some humility. Humblebragging comes in two different forms. The first is humility-based, an example being, "can't believe I got the highest grade in my class”. The second type comes mixed with a bit of complaint, for example, " I can't believe that shopkeeper asked me for ID. I'm 25 !”
People don't like when others humblebrag because they find they are lacking in sincerity. Sincerity is a critical dimension of social evaluation, which is viewed as fundamental to people's identity. In fact, people prize sincerity even above competence and warmth in others, according to Dr. Sezer.
If humblebragging doesn't work, and no one likes it, why do we still do it? We all want to highlight our positive qualities without seeming proud. By speaking in a complaint or an expression of humility, we hope we'll somehow land on the “ sweet spot" of self-presentation : promoting ourselves while also conveying likability. In addition, research suggests that people may experience positive emotions while humblebragging.
Considering that we're all likely to feel the urge to humblebrag, at least to some extent, the proper response when we hear a friend doing it may be to simply let it go-because ultimately we're going to do it ourselves, and who really wants to be called out on it?
【1】Which of the following remarks is an example of humblebragging?
A.How I hate hearing my voice on TV!
B.I'm thrilled to be awarded the first prize.
C.I'm the only person to get promoted in the firm.
D.How I dislike doing the same thing every day!

【3】Why do people humblebrag?
A.To lift up their spirits.
B.To express their complaints.
C.To improve their moral qualities.
D.To show off without bringing annoyance.
【4】What are people advised to do when hearing humblebragging from a friend?
A.Follow it up.
B.Leave it alone.
C.Turn against it.
D.Get to the root of it.
23、Researchers have long known that dolphins(海豚)can identify each other with signature whistles, the specific calls they use to refer to themselves. Now, a new study shows that the sense of taste allows bottlenose dolphins to identify their friends through urine-liquid waste from their bodies.
Study leader Jason Bruck, from Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas, initially wanted to test whether those signature whistles work similarly to human names. He needed a second way for dolphins to identify each other. To find out if dolphins could associate a whistle with a specific dolphin, Bruck turned to urine. A scientist had previously observed wild dolphins purposefully swimming through each other’s urine, leading Bruck to suspect they were gathering information from it.
Over evolutionary time, bottlenose dolphins have lost their sense of smell but kept a strong sense of taste. For the first part of the experiment, the team presented eight dolphins with urine samples from familiar and unknown individuals, and found that the dolphins spent about three times longer time exploring the familiar urine than the unfamiliar urine, with a few individuals collecting the familiar urine for more than 20 seconds. The dolphins paid little attention to the unfamiliar urine.
Then, for the second part, the researchers tested whether an individual’s whistle and urine were connected in their minds. They paired urine samples with recordings of characteristic screams played on underwater speakers, matched either by the same dolphin that provided the urine or by another animal. It turns out that the dolphins spent more time next to the speaker when the whistles corresponded to the urine sample. This indicates they can recognize each other in more than one way.
Using taste could be beneficial in the open ocean, as dolphins would learn from urine the recent presence of an individual. Given the recognition abilities shown in the study, the researchers think that it is possible that dolphins can also extract other information from urine, such as reproductive status or the use of pheromones(外激素)to influence the behavior of others.

A.The swimming style of dolphins.
B.The cause of experimenting with urine.
C.The way of dolphins addressing each other.

A.They screamed at the speaker.
B.They paid little attention to whistles.
C.They stayed near the speaker longer.

【3】What does “extract” underlined in the last paragraph mean?
A.Process.
B.Confirm.
C.Obtain.
D.Convey.
【4】What does the author intend to tell us about the dolphins?
A.They have a strong sense of hearing.
B.They can recognize their friends by taste.
C.They can form close friendships through sound.
D.They use signature whistles to identify themselves.
24、“OK,” I said to my daughter as she bent over her afternoon bowl of rice. “What’s going on with you and your friend J.? ” J. is the leader of a group of third-graders at her camp—a position Lucy herself occupied the previous summer. Now she’s the one on the outs. and every day at snack time, she tells me all about it, while I offer the unhelpful advice all summer long.
“She’s fond of giving orders, “Lucy complained. “She’s turning everyone against me. She’s mean. And she’s fat.” “Excuse me,” I said, struggling for calm. “What did you just say?” “She’s fat.” Lucy mumbled (含糊地说). “We’re going upstairs,” I said, my voice cold. “We’re going to discuss this.” And up we went. I’d spent the nine years since her birth getting ready for this day, the day we’d have the conversation about this horrible word. I knew exactly what to say to the girl on the receiving end of the teasing, but in all of my imaginings, it never once occurred to me that my daughter would be the one who used the F word—Fat.
My daughter sat on her bed, and I sat beside her. “How would you feel if someone made fun of you for something that wasn’t your fault?” I began. “She could stop eating so much,” Lucy mumbled, mouthing the simple advice a thousand doctors have given overweight women for years.
“It’s not always that easy,” I said. “Everyone’s different in terms of how they treat food.” Lucy looked at me, waiting for me to go on. I opened my mouth, then closed it. Should I tell her that, in teasing a woman’s weight, she’s joined the long tradition of critics? Should I tell her I didn’t cry when someone posted my picture and commented, “I’m sorry, but aren’t authors who write books marketed to young women supposed to be pretty?”
Does she need to know, now, that life isn’t fair? I feel her eyes on me, waiting for an answer I don’t have. Words are my tools. Stories are my job. It’s possible she’ll remember what I say forever, and I have no idea what to say.
So I tell her the only thing I can come up with that is absolutely true. I say to my daughter, “I love you, and there is nothing you could ever do to make me not love you. But I’m disappointed in you right now. There are plenty of reasons for not liking someone. What she looks like isn’t one of them.”
Lucy nods, tears on her cheeks. “I won’t say that again,” she tells me, and I pull her close, pressing my nose against her hair. As we sit there together, I pray for her to be smart and strong. I pray for her to find friends, work she loves, a partner who loves her. And still, always, I pray that she will never struggle as I’ve struggled, that weight will never be her cross to bear. She may not be able to use the word in our home, but I can use in my head. I pray that she will never get fat.
【1】Why does the author want to discuss with Lucy?

Loneliness Peaks
For years America has been talking about obesity, but a new study points to a more serious health issue: isolation and loneliness.
Being connected to others socially is widely considered a fundamental human need --- crucial to both well-being and survival. Extreme examples show infants who lack human contact in care fail to grow and often die. Indeed, social isolation has been used as a form of punishment. According to Julianne Holt-Lunstad, the lead author of the study, an increasing portion of the U.S. population now population now experiences isolation regularly. Over 42 million adults above age 45 in the U.S. are estimated to be suffering from chronic(长期的)loneliness.
The study of 340 adults between the ages of 27 and 101 living in San Diego identified three key age ranges when people felt the loneliest. Participants who had the highest levels of loneliness were in their late-20s, mid-50s and late-80s. While it may come as a surprise that people in their late-20s suffered from loneliness, a larger survey shows they actually may suffer the hardest.
With an increasing number of people working from home, watching television, getting into an addiction to electronic devices, it has become too easy to be alone, even if that’s not a person’s intention. Modern day conveniences like having anything we want delivered make it possible to never need to leave the house. So, not surprisingly, those with frequent social contact usually feel less lonely than those with few social ties.
Mounting evidence suggests social isolation and loneliness significantly impact our health, and even shorten our lives, just like obesity. This study isn’t the first time loneliness has been flagged as an emerging health issue. Therefore, reducing both isolation and loneliness is important for quality of life and well-being.
