二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、For many of us, Tide is the most squeaky-clean of home helpers. This year, the 4,000 Americans selected this super-cleaner not only as the most trusted detergent brand but also as the single most trusted brand in the Home and Family products category.

When Cincinnati-based manufacturer Protect & Gamble(P&G)set out to create Tide in the 1930s, it was referred to as Project X. The company first sold soap and candles, made from the animal fats. But as the 20th century took shape, kerosene replaced candles, and plant-based cleansers such as Ivory Soap replaced those made from animal fats. Protect & Gamble was seeing a huge chunk of business being washed down the drain. The hope was that the newfangled, entirely synthetic Project X would save it.

“This may ruin the soap business,” P&G’s chairman William Gamble said at one point. “But if anybody is going to ruin the soap business it had better be Protect & Gamble.”

At first, many of the formulas cleaned clothes but left them like sandpaper. It took Byerly and the Cincinnati chemists ten years to come up with a solution. They finally hit upon a mixture that creates molecules that grab hard not only to grease and dirt but also to water. It all just washes away, leaving clean fabric without any soapy remaining. And Tide was an instant success.

Sold first as powder, the product was a huge hit. P&G’s marketing department leaped into action, giving boxes with washing machines and flooding magazines and newspapers with ads showing happy and healthy housewives literally hugging the iconic orange box.

Then it would be turned into a liquid(1984)and later the fantastically profitable Tide Power Pods(2012). The company has developed an almost endless series of varieties: Tide with special scents, Tide with fabric softness, and, most recently, high-powered Tide for environmentally friendly cold-water washes.

And soon, perhaps, the newest variety might be Space Tide, the product of a new partnership between P&G and NASA. Tide is taking a test run to the International Space Station to see how well the detergent cleans and reacts in the low-water, no-gravity environment outside Earth’s atmosphere.

【1】What can be learned from William Gamble’s words?

A.The company P&G must be the first one to ruin the soap business.

B.The company P&G scolds someone else for ruining the soap business.

C.The company P&G should be to blame for the ruin of the soap business.

D.The company P&G has confidence and power to reform the soap business.

【2】How many series of Tide product variety have been produced since 2000?

    A.Four.

    B.Five.

    C.Six.

    D.Seven.

【3】What will be probably talked about in the following part of the text?

A.The introduction of the product Space Tide.

B.The advantages of the product Space Tide.

C.The space test report of the product Space Tide.

D.The clean ability of the product Space Tide.

【4】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

A.The history of American laundry products.

B.The development of American favorite Tide.

C.The challenge and difficulty of laundry industry.

D.The rise and fall of the company Protect & Gamble.

  • 22、   To move visual technology into the future, sometimes it helps to make a little noise. Researchers have used sound waves to produce floating 3-D images, create a sense of touch and even supply a soundtrack.

Since the 1940s, scientists have toyed with the concept of acoustic levitation(声悬浮), the use of soundwave vibrations(震动) to trap tiny things in midair. The technology has gained greater capabilities in the past decade. Some researchers believe this improvement could lead to applications such as contributing to novel 3-D printing methods, or creating displays that would be visible from any angle without requiring a screen.

Other researchers have also worked on visual displays that use acoustic levitation. In addition to visuals, the system can also produce audible noise to give the display a soundtrack. And the ultrasound speakers can also concentrate vibrations in one spot so that a finger might feel a sense pushing back—a little like the object shown by the floating image is really there. Soundwaves create a 3-D display!

Display without a screen is remarkably useful. It means that everybody in the room can see the image—any angle, location—and that’s extremely helpful. As a communications system, such a display might one day allow users to chat with a 3-D projection(投影) of a person who can turn his or her head to follow as they move around a room.

The display will require a lot more work before you can install it in your living room, however. So far, this has been done in the research laboratory. We need to push it a little bit harder. We need to do more analysis to see if it would make sense to create a real display that people would have at home. The current system can only show simple graphics, such as a smiley face or figure eight, in real time.

Still, we are optimistic about the potential for this type of technology. If the system had only one speaker-covered surface instead of two, it could generate images that are bigger than the device itself. We can’t make a TV image that’s bigger than the TV—even a projector has to have a projection screen that’s bigger than the image itself. But with a volumetric(容积的) display, a small, portable device might produce a much larger picture. We can imagine, in the future, having volumetric displays in watches, for example, that create large images that just project out of your watch.

1From the first two paragraphs soundwave vibrations can be used to _________.

A.catch very small objects in midair

    B.develop 3-D printer’s capabilities

    C.replace a creative display screen

D.compose soundtracks by making no noise

    B.Situations of the modern technology.

    C.Praise for the cutting-edge technology.

    D.Outlooks for the new technology.

4What can be a suitable title for the passage?

    A.Hearing is Seeing—Sound Waves Create a 3-D Display.

B.Seeing is Believing—3-D Printing Methods Arrive.

C.Advancing Sense of Touch—3-D Images Float in the Air.

    D.Promoting TV Technology—Chat with 3-D Projections.

  • 23、Blind people usually possess one advantage over other people who can see. Their sense of hearing is far more acute. Bats, whose sight is poor, use a sound location system to help them avoid blocks in the dark. They send out pulses of sound waves, pitched at 50,000 cycles per second, far above the limits of the human ear, which can hear sounds up to frequencies of about 20,000 cycles per second. As the echoes bounce back off obstacles such as trees and walls, the bats are able to take proper action.

The first steps to help blind people to see with sound are based on exactly the same principle. The sound is given off by an ultrasonic (超声的) torch, whose shape is different from a normal electric torch. It is double-barreled. It works in a similar way to a sonar (声呐) unit on a warship or submarine. The unit’s transmitter sends out pulses of ultrasonic waves at the same frequency as the bat and the receiver picks up the returning echoes. Because these are still above the frequency at which the human ear can pick them up. The echoes are filtered (过滤) through circuits that turn them into “bleeps” which can be clearly heard before passing them into headphones.

This means that a person holding the torch can point it ahead of him and scan the area for obstacles over a range of about 25 feet. If there are no return echoes coming through the headphones, then there is nothing in the way. If echoes do come back, then the closer the obstruction the faster the succession of bleeps and the deeper the pitch of each bleep. With practice, the torch could help a blind person to lead a more normal life.

At present, the experimental ultrasonic torch requires a shoulder bag to carry the batteries, cables for the power supplies and earphones, as well as the torch itself. Fortunately, reducing the size of the electronic equipment is progressing and it should not be long before the whole set-up can be reproduced in a form small enough to fit into a pair of glasses. The wearer would face in the direction he wanted to check, and lift or lower his head just as a sighted person would.

1Which statement of the following is NOT true according to the article?

    A. Bats can avoid blocks in the dark.

    B. Blind people have more acute sense of hearing than normal people.

    C. The shape of ultrasonic torch is different from a normal electric torch.

    D. The ultrasonic torch doesn’t send out the same pulse frequency as the bat does.

2What is the ultrasonic torch used for?

    a. Helping the blind to walk.

    b. Helping deaf children to watch sports.

    c. Helping the blind to lead a better life.

    d. Being used in a warship or submarine during a war.

    A. a b   B. a c

    C. a d   D. b c

3What can we infer from this article?

    A. The ultrasonic glasses have been produced.

    B. The blind with the ultrasonic torch can walk themselves.

    C. The blind should not go further without return echoes.

    D. The filtered bleeps would be passed on to their ears.

4What is the main idea of the passage?

    A. The ultrasonic torch can improve the life of the blind.

    B. Animals can help scientist invent new equipment.

    C. The technology is progressing rapidly.

    D. The ultrasonic torch is not easy to carry now.

  • 24、Do you know that forests cover an estimated 38 percent of the total land surface of the European Union(EU)?And that these extensive areas covered with trees and underbrush need to be protected so they can continue to do good for the environment for the next generation? Now the EU has just come up with its ambitious new "Forest Strategy".

Forests can fight against climate change and prevent biodiversity loss. They can reduce the impacts of climate change by cooling down cities, protecting us from heavy flooding, and reducing drought impacts. They are valuable ecosystems that are home to a major part of the world's plants and animals. But forests also improve our health and well-being through functions like water regulation, erosion(侵蚀)control and air purification. And they serve as ideal settings for "recreation, relaxation and learning, as well as securing livelihoods".

This new European-wide forest conservation vision takes in an impressive commitment to plant a minimum of three billion additional trees over the next decade. This is an ambitious plan but a long overdue one because forests have been battered by severe weather and human impacts, particularly the demand for wood over the last ten years. As the EU Observer puts it, "extreme weather events and the increasing demand for forest services and products, driven by wood-based bioenergy and international trade, have accelerated tree cover loss in the last decade."

This EU strategy takes into account the complexity of forest sustainability(可持续性). Observation, knowledge exchange, ongoing monitoring and close cooperation between public and private organizations and individuals are also key elements in this new continent-wide forest protection strategy.

This is a future-focused blueprint, designed to protect these precious green areas, and ensure that the trees and greenery are here to stay!

【1】Why are two questions raised in the beginning?

A.To show the EU's forest coverage.

B.To call on people to protect forests.

    C.To encourage more forest expansion.

D.To explain the reason for the strategy.

【2】What does the author intend to show in paragraph 2?

    A.The importance of forests.

    B.The environmental role of forests.

    C.The background of the strategy.

    D.The urgency of the strategy.

【3】What does the underlined word "battered" in paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Struck.

    B.Controlled.

    C.Damaged.

    D.Removed.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

    A.Planting Trees for the World

    B.Taking Forests into the Future

C.EU's Action to Protect the Earth

    D.Irreplaceable Benefits of Forests

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My hearing aid was a box that was tied to my shoulders and hung from my neck. I carried it because when I was young I became deaf. After consulting(协商) with a lot of educational experts, doctors, and parents of other deaf children, my parents decided to send me to a school where all of my classmates and teachers would have normal hearing, instead of sending me to a private school for the deaf. So I was the only deaf child at Blue Creek Elementary School.

I experienced great anxiety throughout Elementary School because, in addition to the problems of “fitting in” with the other students, I also struggled with most of my school work. I seemed to spend every spare moment doing homework just so I could keep up. I could feel that my parents and teachers were deeply disappointed in me because of my academic struggles. The teachers didn’t know what to do with me nor did they show much interest in any of my poor performances.

My hearing disability required me to ask everyone from time to time, “What did he or she say?” I worried that everyone would soon grow tired of repeating everything back to me. When the kids made fun of me, I had no way but to accept it. I was sure that I was a bad person; my self-esteem(自尊心) was quite low. I saw myself as an ugly kid wearing a box around his neck who wasn’t even smart enough to keep up with the rest of the other kids.

Mrs. Jordan, my 5th grade teacher, changed all of that with a simple two-word phrase. One morning, she asked the class a question. I read her lips(嘴唇) from my front-row seat and immediately raised my hand. I couldn’t believe it—for once I knew the answer.

    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

But, when she called on me, I was afraid.
