21、Saving Money on Holiday Travel
The holiday season isn’t just about shopping and gifts. 【1】 However, holiday travel can get expensive fast faster than you can imagine. Fortunately, the following tips will help you keep your travel spending under control.
• Plan ahead. The earlier you book your travel, from flights to hotels, the easier it is to find good deals.【2】 In fact, many experts point out that you should book travel about one to three months earlier so that you can have more opportunities to find the best deals and you know what you will be doing.
• Book your air travel on cheaper days. Travelling by air on Tuesdays and Wednesdays often costs less than travelling on Fridays and Sundays. During the holidays, though, it’s not just about a specific day of the week.【3】 Days immediately before and after a holiday can be expensive. If you can adjust your plans so that you can travel on Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day, you might be able to find an even better deal.
• Consider travelling overnight. Overnight flights often cost less than those at more convenient times.【4】 Depending on where you are going, and the options of how to get there, overnight travel can help you avoid a night in the hotel, as well as save your money on travel to your destination.
• 【5】 You can’t bring liquids with you on the plane, but you can bring sandwiches and other snacks. When you’re on the road, you can buy food at local groceries to make your own meals. If you are staying in a hotel for a long time, consider cooking your own food, especially if you have access to a microwave.
A. Bring your own food.
B. Consider affordable accommodations.
C. Booking earlier can also save your money.
D. If you are flying, consider alternative airports.
E. You also need to consider the days surrounding the holiday.
F. A great deal of travel also takes place during this time of the year.
G. Other alternatives include sleeper trains, as well as overnight ferries.
22、Many people would like to return to school to increase earning potential, realize dreams, or finish something they started long ago. However, some have families and jobs, and getting to day courses—or even night school—can be an impossible thing.【1】 Thanks to the Internet and other forms of quick communication, elearning for students has become the busy person’s preferred method for achieving educational goals.【2】 Below are some examples.
If you already have a year or two of your degree behind you, elearning can help you complete your requirements. Educationminded employers often give employees incentives(激励) to complete their degrees online.
If you are a stayathome mom or dad and looking to return to the school then you are a best candidate for elearning.【3】 As long as you can meet deadlines and perform highquality work, you can achieve the highest educational goals.
【4】 In this case, elearning for students who are already in an advanced degree or specialized study satisfies the requirement. You can earn the master’s or doctoral degree, as well as highlevel certifications in your online program.
If you live in a place that does not offer the kind of education you want, you may want to look at elearning in an overseas college or university. For instance, England has some of the world’s most wellknown institutes, but many cannot go there for an entire education.【5】
A.What a pity that they are kept away!
B.Now they have a new choice—elearning.
C.But its highquality education can be enjoyed worldwide now.
D.The Internet provides you a new form of learning to realize dreams.
E.In reality, almost anyone can benefit from the flexibility of elearning.
F.Many ecourses allow you to use the learning system whenever you can.
G.Many people have motivations for further education past the undergraduate degree.
23、 A study has shown that severe stress lasting weeks or months can damage cell communications in the brain’s memory areas. Recently, researchers from University of California, Irvine, have provided the first evidence that short-term stress lasting for a few hours has the same effect.
“Stress does exist in our lives and cannot be avoided,” said Dr. Baram, leader of the UC Irvine School. “Our findings can play an important role in the present development of medicine that might prevent these undesirable effects and offer understanding of why some people are forgetful or have difficulty keeping the memories.”
In their study, Baram and her UC Irvine colleagues identified a novel process in which stress caused these effects. They found that, severe stress activated(激活) Corticotropin Releasing Hormones(CRH), which prevented the brain from keeping memory.
Memory takes place at synapses, where there are connections through which brain cells communicate. These synapses lie on dendritic spines(神经元). In rat and mouse studies, Baram’s group saw that the release(释放) of CRH in the brain’s primary memory center led to the rapid breakup of these dendritic spines, which in turn limited the ability of synapses to collect and store memories.
In addition, the researchers reproduced the effects of stress on dendritic spines by keeping low levels of CRH, and watching how the spines ruptured over minutes. “Fortunately, once we removed the CRH, the spines seemed to grow back again, ” Baram said. “And this study can play a role in the creation of treatments to address stress-related memory loss.”

D.To promote an effective treatment for stress.
24、 Before you start feeling regretful about eating too much, consider a new study from the Center for Nutrition Research at Illinois Institute of Technology that suggests the fat in avocado (鳄梨) can help you prevent hunger and stay more satisfied longer.
The study was published in the journal Nutrients on May 8, 2019. It concludes that overweight people who added avocado to their meals as a substitute for carbohydrates (碳水化合物) like cola were able to stave off hunger longer and increase meal enjoyment. On three different days, researchers fed 31 overweight adults one of three meals with the same calories; a high-fat meal with one avocado, a high-fat meal with half an avocado, or a low-fat meal. For six hours afterward, the volunteers reported how hungry they felt.
Everyone reported feeling fuller longer after the meal featuring a whole avocado; even the meal with half an avocado helped satisfy the volunteers longer than the low-fat meal. Further tests revealed that the avocado meals helped improve an intestinal (肠的) hormone called PYY—when it drops, you feel hungry.
“For years, fats have been targeted as the main cause of obesity, and now carbohydrates have come under scrutiny (监视) for their role in appetite regulation and weight control,” said Britt Burton-Freeman, PhD, director of the Center for Nutrition Research at Illinois Tech. “There is no ‘one size fits all’ solution when it comes to best meal composition for managing appetite. However, understanding the relationship between food chemistry and its physiological (生理的) effects in different populations can reveal opportunities for addressing appetite control and reducing rates of obesity, putting us a step closer to personalized dietary recommendations.”
Although nutritional experts have long blamed fat for weight gain, more and more studies like this one indicate that eating a proper amount of healthy fat can help prevent hunger and assist with weight control. This study proves that small, enjoyable changes in your diet like swapping a piece of bread for a yummy half-avocado can lead you to achieve your weight-loss goals.

Hacking our senses to boost learning power
Was your school noisy or peaceful? It might not seem important, but a growing body of research suggests that sounds can have an impact on learning, performance and creativity. There is certainly some well-established research to suggest that some noises can have a harmful effect on learning.Numerous studies over the past 15 years have found that children attending schools under the flight paths of large airports lag behind in their exam results.
But general noise seems to have an effect too. Bridget Shield,a professor of acoustics at London South Bank University, and Julie Dockrell, now at the Institute of Education, have been conducting studies on the effects of all sorts of noises, such as traffic and sirens,as well as noise generated by the children themselves. When they recreated those particular sounds in an experimental setting while children completed various cognitive tasks, they found a significant negative effect on exam scores.“Everything points to a harmful impact of the noise on children's performance,in numeracy(计算能力),in literacy, and in spelling,”says Shield. The noise seemed to have an especially harmful effect on children with special needs.
Shield says the sound of"babble"---the chatter of other children,is particularly distracting in the classroom.“People are very distracted by speech---particularly if it's understandable, but you're not involved in it."This phenomenon is also known as the irrelevant speech effect, she says, adding that“it's a very common finding in open-plan offices as well."
Whether background sounds are beneficial or not seems to depend on what kind of noise it is and the volume. In a series of studies published last year,Ravi Mehta from the College of Business at Illinois and colleagues tested people's creativity while exposed to a soundtrack made up of background noises---such as coffee-shop chatter and construction-site drilling---at different volumes. They found that people were more creative when the background noises were played at a medium level than when volume was low. Loud background noise, however, damaged their creativity.
