二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、North America's hoary bats could decline massively unless efforts are made to reduce deaths at wind farms, a new study reports. It is estimated that without effective conservation efforts, hoary bat populations could drop by 50% by 2028.

Hoary bats are comparatively large bats, whose weight is between 20—35 grams. They have dark fur dusted with white, which is how they got their name. Hoary bats undergo seasonal migration, moving from summer ranges across most of North America to southern and coastal winter habitats. Hoary bats will also hibernate for short periods of time. Hoary bats in North America provide vital ecosystem services such as insect pest consumption. The economic value of insectivorous bats to U.S. agricultural industry has been estimated in the billions annually.

“Researchers and conservation biologists have been concerned about the number of bats killed at wind farms for more than a decade, but this research emphasizes how urgently we need to act to carry out known solutions” says study co-author Winifred Frick, chief scientist for Bat Conservation International.

For their research, Frick and colleagues created models of species population growth and mortality. They considered two wind energy build-out plans―high and low—which looked at the expected growth of the wind energy sector in the United States and Canada through 2050. The report focused on determining how wind energy expansion might affect hoary bat mortality and what industry solutions could be put in place to help.

“The good news is we already know how to reduce bat deaths. The best evidence so far suggests that wind turbine limit below five meters per second could reduce hoary bat deaths nearly in half. By working together with industry partners, we can have sustainable wind energy while protecting biodiversity.” Frick told Treehugger.

【1】What can be inferred about hoary bats in North America?

A.They are the largest bats in North America.

B.They play a vital role in American agriculture.

C.They stay in fixed places all the year round.

D.They keep active even in severe winter.

【2】What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4?

    A.How the research was conducted.

    B.Why wind energy was expanded.

    C.How the best solution worked.

    D.Why wind mills needed improving.

【3】What is Frick's attitude towards reducing the deaths of hoary bats?

    A.Ambiguous.

    B.Skeptical.

    C.Conservative.

    D.Optimistic.

【4】Which section of a website does the text probably come from?

    A.Wildlife.

  • 22、Sometime in the next century, the familiar early-newspaper on the front porch (门廊) will  disappear. And instead of reading your newspaper, it will read to you. You'll get up and turn on the computer newspaper just like switching on the TV. An electronic voice will distribute stories about the latest events, guided by a program that selects the type of news you want. You'll even get to choose the kind of voice you want to hear. Do you want more information on this brief story? A simple touch makes the entire text appear. Save it in your own personal computer if you like. These are among the predictions from communication experts working on the newspapers of the future. Pictured as part of broader home-based media and entertainment systems, computer newspapers will unite print and broadcast reporting, and offer news and analysis with video images of news events.

Most of the technology is available now, but convincing more people that they don't need to read a newspaper is the next step. But resistance to computer newspapers may be stronger from within journalism. Since it is such a cultural change, it may be that the present generation of  journalists and publishers will have to die off before the next generation realizes that the newspaper industry is no longer a newspaper industry. Technology is making the end of ' traditional newspapers unavoidable.

Despite technological advances, it could take decades to replace newsprint with computer screens. It might take 30 to 40 years to complete the changeover because people need to buy computers and because newspapers have established financial interests in the paper industry.

【1】Which of the following is NOT an advantage of computer newspapers?

    A. They are cheaper than traditional newspapers.

    B. They are more convenient to read.

    C. You can choose the kind of voice you want to hear.

    D. You can easily save information for future use.

【2】Which of the following is a reason why it will take a long time to complete the changeover?

    A. The technology is impossible now.

    B. Computer newspaper s are too expensive.

C . The popularization of computers needs a long time.

    D. Traditional newspapers are easier to read.

【3】It can be inferred that journalists are against computer newspapers because ____ .

A.they don't know how to use computers

    B. they think computer newspapers take too much time to read

    C. they think the new technology is bad

    D. they have been trained to write for traditional newspapers

【4】We can infer from the passage that .

    A. all technological changes are good

    B. new technologies don't always replace old ones

    C. new technologies will eventually replace old ones

    D. traditional newspapers are here to stay for another century

【5】What is the best title of the passage?

    A. Computer newspapers are well liked.

    B. Newspapers of the future will be on the computer.

    C. Newspapers are out of fashion.

    D. New communications technology.

  • 23、Solving great space mystery

Monkey King, the hero in the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, is making headlines again. On Nov 30, China’s Dark Matter Particle Explorer(DAMPE, 暗物质粒子探测卫星), which is named after Monkey King’s Chinese name Wukong, found mysterious signals in the universe that may help scientists learn more about dark matter, according to Xinhua News Agency.

“This is the first time scientists have found such detailed and precise signals, ” Chang Jin, vice director of the Purple Mountain Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (中国紫金山天文台), told Xinhua.

Dark matter is a type of hypothetical(假设的)matter in the universe. Scientists believe that it influences the movement of galaxies. However, no one has ever directly observed it.

Swiss astronomer Fritz Zwicky first used the term “dark matter” in 1933, when he spotted something very unusual. Some galaxies that Zwicky saw were spinning so fast that they should have scattered into all comers of the universe, but they didn’t. He realized there must have been something else there that had a strong enough gravitational pull to hold everything together. He called it“dark matter”.

In one sense, dark matter is like the windwe can’t see it, but we know it’s there.

Finding out more about dark matter could help us understand how the universe began, but being able to do so isn’t easy. Scientists believe that when two dark matter particles crash together, they form new particles and produce high amounts of energy and heat. This is why explorers like Wukong are sent to find such particles.

Indeed, “Wu” means “understanding” and “kong” means “void(空的). ” The nickname symbolizes the main goal of DAMPE’s mission, which is to understand dark matter better.

Since its launch in 2015, DAMPE has already recorded 3. 5 billion high-energy particles, reported Newsweek. And according to Science, the satellite has a lifespan of five years, which means it still has three more years to “understand the void”. “DAMPE has opened a new window tor observing the high-energy universe, unveiling new physical phenomena beyond our current understanding, ” Chang told Xinhua.

    1On Nov 30, DAMPE______________.

A.was named Wukong by Chinese scientists

    B.was successfully launched into space

C.located dark matter in the universe for the first time

D.detected clear signals related to dark matter

2According to the text, dark matter________.

    A.is a spinning galaxy

B.is a type of gravitational pull

C.is made up of invisible particles that hold galaxies together

D.makes mysterious stars scattered in the universe

3According to the text, a better understanding of dark matter could help scientists discover_____________.

    A.the movement of galaxies

    B.the origin of the universe

C.how crashes happen between dark matter particles

D.how to make use of high energy caused by crashes

4What can we learn about DAMPE from the text?

A.It has recorded 35 billion high-energy particles so far.

B.It will be able to keep working for another five years.

C.It was made to observe and identify dark matter in the universe.

D.It could help prevent dark matter particles crashing together.

  • 24、At a museum in Vietnam, Lena Bui’s film Where Birds Dance Their Last reflected on the beauty and vulnerability of Vietnamese feather farms after Bird Flu. During a festival in Rwanda, Ellen Reid’s audio experience Soundwalk was shared in a hopeful discussion about music, parks and mental health. These are a few of the things I have helped bring to life over the years, working at the intersection of scientific research, the arts and advocacy to support science in solving global health challenges.

Science is key to addressing these issues. But it isn’t the only key. To achieve its potential and for its advances to be implemented and reach all who could benefit, science depends on trust and good relationships. People might not always see science as relevant, trustworthy or meaningful to their lives. There are reasons why some see science as having a chequered past, from nuclear weapons to eugenics, and are therefore uninterested in, or suspicious of, what it proposes. Others feel excluded by the incomprehensibility of hyper specialist knowledge.

In its capacity to build upon and test an evidence base, science is powerful, but researchers and funders haven’t been as good at ensuring this evidence base responds to the needs and interests of diverse communities, or informs policy makers to take action. Science might be perceived as distancing itself from the personal, the poetic and the political, yet it is precisely these qualities that can be most influential when it comes to public interest in atopic or how a government prioritizes a decision.

A moving story well told can be more memorable than a list of facts. This is where the arts come in. Artists can give us different perspectives with which to consider and reimagine the world together. They can redress the proclaimed objectivity in science by bringing stories —subjectivities —into the picture, and these can help foster a sense of connection and hope.

In 2012, I set up artist residencies in medical research centres around the world. Bui was attached to the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit in Vietnam. The head of the research team was delighted, finding that Bui, as a Vietnamese artist, had license to be in, and to share useful insights from, villages where infectious disease researchers weren’t welcome. Six years later, I led Wellcome’s Contagious Cities program, which established artist residencies worldwide to support locally led explorations of epidemic preparedness. The recent pandemic made this work more noticeable, and has informed our Mindscapes program which is currently sharing experiences of mental health through the work of artists.

With pandemic, climate and mental health crises upon us, rising inequality and what feels like an increasingly broken world, never has there been more need to build and nurture hopeful and imaginative spaces to grow human connection and shared purpose for the common good. Science and the arts can work hand in glove to achieve this.

【1】The author lists two works in Paragraph 1 mainly to ______.

A.reveal the gap between science and art

B.prove his competence in both science and art

    C.introduce successful science-related artworks

D.show that science can be promoted in art forms

【2】What does the underlined word “chequered” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.Recent and remote.

    B.Good and bad.

    C.Usual and unusual.

    D.Peaceful and scary.

【3】Which of the following would the author agree?

A.Policy-makers base their decisions on science.

    B.Researchers popularize science effectively.

C.Science is well received among the public.

D.The arts help people build connections.

【4】Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A.The Value of the Arts to Science

B.Where Do Science and the Arts Meet?

C.A New Way to Fight Pandemic—the Arts

D.Which Matters More, Science or the Arts?
